Introduction 2 Introduction Power rental equipment comprises the following: A power generator, either diesel or gas based. Other auxiliary components, including cables, load banks, fuel tanks and transformers Electric power generators can be categorized into three groups, on the basis of their application: Standby Power: A standby power generator is used mainly for power generation in the event of a power outage in an emergency situation and during maintenance or testing. It is used only for the duration of the power outage. Prime Power: A prime power generator is used as a primary source of power supply. It is often used in the mining, oil and gas, and construction industries, at remote areas that do not have grid accessibility. Peak Shaving: A peak shaving power generator is used during a specified time period when the demand for power is very high. The time period covered could be the summer or the winter months, or could also imply specific hours during the day when the electrical load is very high. Electric power generators can be classified into three groups, on the basis of their usage: Retail Rental Services: Retail rental services are used for small scale rental businesses, where the power requirement is relatively low. It is used for providing prime load or standby power. Project Rental Services: Project rental services are used by power plants and in heavy manufacturing, primarily for peak-shaving purposes. Apart from providing power equipment machinery, rental power companies usually offer various other services, including installation and operation and maintenance, and general engineering. 12

Power Rental Market: Global 3 Power Rental Market: Global 3.1 Power Rental Market, Global, Breakdown by Type of Fuel In all of the countries considered in this report, diesel is the primary fuel used for rental power generators. On average, XX XX% of the generators in any country are diesel-based, while the remaining XX XX% are gas-based. In countries where diesel is easily available and therefore less expensive, such as Saudi Arabia, only diesel-based generators are used. In the rest of the countries considered in this report (China, Brazil, the US, India, Bangladesh and Nigeria) dieselbased generators are predominantly used. Gas generators are not used widely because of their mobility difficulties. A proper infrastructural set-up is required for the transportation of gas, which requires high levels of investment as well as clearances and approvals. Power Rental Market: Global 3.1.1 Power Rental Market, Global, Breakdown by Countries The US has the highest market share in the power rental market, with XX. It is closely followed by China and Saudi Arabia, which have shares of XX% and XX% respectively. Brazil, Nigeria and India contribute about XX%, XX% and XX% respectively. Bangladesh contributes less than XX%. Together, the rest of the world contributes slightly more than XX%. By 2020, it is expected that China will be the leading player in the power rental market, with a share of XX%, followed by Saudi Arabia (XX%), the US (XX%), Brazil (XX%), Nigeria (XX%), India (XX%) and Bangladesh (less than XX%). Together, the rest of the world will account for slightly more than XX%. 3.1.2 Power Rental Market, Global, Revenue Forecast Global power rental revenue increased from $XX billion in 2006 to $XX billion in 2012, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of XX%. With people slowly realizing the benefits of renting rather than purchasing generators, they are opting more for power rental solutions. 14

Appendix 11 Appendix 11.1 Definitions 11.1.1 Power The rate of production, transfer or energy use. It is usually related to electricity. Measured in watts and often expressed in kilowatts (kw) or Megawatts (MW). It is also known as "real" or "active" power. 11.1.2 Installed Capacity The generator s nameplate capacity (as stated by the manufacturer) or the maximum rated output of a generator under given conditions. Installed capacity is given in MW on a nameplate affixed to the generator. 11.1.3 Active Installed Capacity The component of electric power that actually performs work. It is given in kw or MW. 11.1.4 Electricity Generation The production of electric energy, achieved through the transformation of other forms of energy. This term also refers to the amount of electric energy produced. It is measured in Gigawatt hours (GWh). 11.1.5 Electricity Consumption The sum of electricity generated, plus imports, minus exports, minus transmission and distribution losses. It is measured in GWh. 11.1.6 Thermal Power Plant A plant in which turbine generators are driven by burning fossil fuels. 11.1.7 Hydropower Plant A plant in which the turbine generators are driven by falling water. 134

Appendix 11.1.8 Nuclear Power The electricity generated by the use of thermal energy, released from the fission of nuclear fuel in a reactor. 11.1.9 Renewable Energy Resources Naturally replenishing energy resources that are limited in the amount of energy that is available per unit of time. Biomass, geothermal, solar and wind energy are all renewable resources. 11.2 Abbreviation Table 35: Abbreviation Abbreviation ANEEL BPC BPDP CAGR CEA DOE ECOWAS EPA FERC FTA GDP IPP LNG mmbtu mmcfd MME O&M PM QPR REA SEC T&D TWh Source: GlobalData Full form Agencia Nacional de Energia Eletrica Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation Bangladesh Power Development Board Compound Annual Growth Rate Central Electricity Auhtority Department of Energy Economic Community of West African States Environmental Protection Agency Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Free Trade Agreement Gross Domestic Product Independent Power Producers Liquefied Natural Gas million metric British thermal units million of cubic feet per day Ministry of Mines and Energy Operations and maintenance Particulate Matter Quick Rental Power Rural Electrification Agency Saudi Electric Company Transmission and Distribution Terawatt-hour 135
