The research report should be completed by the end of the year, possibly integrated with another content area. Unit Topic Writing Prompts 1 Short Story Writing Prompt 1 Writing from Your Imagination Write a short story set in an interesting place. Make sure that your story has a plot, a conflict, and one or more characters. Choose a story from this unit that you especially liked. Write story that a similar plot but different characters but different characters and a different setting. Writing from Fine Art Find a painting that seems to tell a story. Think about the people in it and the conflicts they might face. Write a story based on the painting. Select an interesting character or setting from a movie, a TV program, or a video game. Use this character or setting in a story of your own.

2 Describing a Person Writing Prompt 1 Write a focused description of a person. Your description should have many details and should tell why the person is important to you. The literature in this unit is full of vivid characters. Choose one of the characters you read about. Describe that person as clearly as you can. Write a newspaper review recommending a book or a story that you have recently read, or a play in a movie you have seen. Support your recommendation with vivid descriptions of the characters. Writing from Your Imagination Write a description of a character who could appear in a science fiction or fantasy story. 3 Analyzing a Story Writing Prompt 1 Analyzing a story means figuring out meanings that you did not notice at first. Choose a short story and write an analysis that helps a reader understand it better. Examine one or two literary elements in the story, such as plot, character, conflict, setting, theme, or point of view. Great stories are everywhere, not just in literature. Think of as story that you recently viewed or read. Write an essay that briefly summarizes the story and analyzes an important aspect of it. Write an analysis of a TV commercial. Writing About a Song Write an analysis explaining why you do or do not like a particular song. 4 Comparison-Contrast Essay Writing Prompt 1 Write an essay that compares and contrasts two literary selections or two characters. Your essay should explain why you chose those selections or characters. Write a comparison-contrast essay about two people, places, objects, or actions that are familiar to you. Explain why you chose those subjects.

Write the script for a radio or television commercial, convincing consumers to buy your product or service comparing and contrasting it with another product or service. Include examples to support your sales pitch. Write a letter to a friend comparing actors in two movies or television shows that you have recently seen. Explain which actor you prefer, and give reasons to support your choice. 5 Personal Response to a Poem Writing Prompt 1 Choose a poem that you especially liked, a poem that you strongly disliked, or a poem that puzzled you. Write a personal response that explains how you reacted to the poem. Briefly describe the poem so that readers who don t know it will understand your ideas. Songs are poems, too. Write an essay about a song lyric that especially meaningful to your. Give specific examples and details from the song so that readers will know why the song matters to you. Write a consumer information report that explains your reaction to an item that you have used or purchased. Your report should include the good and bad features of the item and your overall judgment of it. Write an essay to describe your personal experience with and evaluation of a media outlet.

6 Problem-Solution Essay Writing Prompt 1 Choose a problem that deeply interests you. Write an essay in which you explain the problem, examine its causes, and explore possible solutions. Some of the myths, legends, and tales in this unit are about solving problems. Choose a tale that interests you. In an essay, explain the problem and describe the solution. Write a problem-solution essay about a situation at home. Choose a problem that affects people in your community. Present a solution that a group of people could work on together. 7 Personal Narrative Writing Prompt 1 Think of a special event in your life, and write a narrative to describe it, include details to help your reader understand what the event was like. Be sure to explain why the event was important to you. Choose an event from a literary work that reminds you of something in your own life. Describe the event and tell what similar thing happened to you. Think of your favorite television characters. Use the events in their lives to help you think of similar incidents in your own life. Scan newspapers or magazines to find articles that remind you of events in your life. 8 Persuasive Essay Writing Prompt 1 What makes you angry or concerned? Choose an issue that your feel strongly about. Write a persuasive essay in which you explain the issue and attempt to persuade your readers to agree with your point of view. Sometimes you read something that makes you about an issue in a new way. Using a selection in

this unit as a springboard, write a persuasive essay about an issue that interests you. Writing from the News Identify controversial topics of national or international concern. Write an essay arguing a wellinformed opinion. Writing About Health Write an essay that convinces readers to adopt a healthful habit. 9 Research Report Writing Prompt 1 Write a research report that investigates a topic that you have always wanted to know more about. Your report should include information from at least three sources. Did a work of fiction or nonfiction that you read this year make you think of a topic that you would like to explore? Write a research report that explores the topic in detail. Your report should include data from at least three sources as well as your own ideas. Writing About Science Write a research report about an intriguing aspect of science. Writing About Fine Art Write a research report that explores the life of a famous artist or the characteristics of his or her own work. Writing Prompt 5 Writing about Ancient Countries Write a research report that investigates and ancient civilization.
