ASSIGNMENT OF VOICE TEACHERS At DePaul, all students in applied lessns are assigned t a teacher by the area crdinatrs, s the Vcal Area Crdinatr makes the vice teacher assignments. It is the gal f the area crdinatrs t listen t feedback and requests in an effrt t create happy pairings while simultaneusly fulfilling their charge t prtect ur teachers frm being verwrked/underwrked and heeding requests frm the Perfrmance Chair, Assciate Dean fr Academics, and the Dean. Finding the balance is an imprtant task that they take seriusly. Students are allwed t cntact the area crdinatrs and request t be placed in a teacher's studi pending rm and administrative apprval. Yu are welcme t reach ut t teachers and express interest in studying with them. They may als grant yu a trial lessn (fr which yu may need t pay them). Yu d nt have t have had a trial lessn in rder t make a request. CHANGING VOICE TEACHERS If a teacher-student relatinship becmes strained, then students shuld discuss this situatin with their teacher, fllwed by the Vcal Area Crdinatr. If the prblem appears t be unslvable, then the student shuld fill ut the Applicatin fr Vice Instructr Change frm fund n the Schl f Music website (music.depaul.edu > Resurces > Cllege Office > Frms > Vcal Area). The student shuld nt have discussin with ther teachers befre these steps are cmpleted. 4

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR VOICE STUDENTS VOICE LESSON CREDIT REQUIREMENTS FOR UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMS Vcal Perfrmance 48 credits, 36 fr the 08-9 Freshman Class Music Educatin 4 credits, 8 fr the 08-9 Freshman Class Perfrming Arts Management 4 credits, 8 fr the 08-9 Freshman Class Bachelr f Arts 6 credits, fr the 08-9 Freshman Class Sund Recrding Technlgy credits, 9 fr the 08-9 Freshman Class We encurage SRT majrs t cnsider a secnd year f study at r 4 credits t cntinue the mastery f technique and repertire that will give a greater expertise and sensitivity t their chsen field. We encurage all majrs t cntinue study as lng as pssible as yur expertise will enhance each f these disciplines. ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR CONCERTS, ETC. Part f yur applied vice study requires attendance at cncerts, master classes, etc., bth in and utside DePaul. If yu have any issues attending ne f these required events, please ntify yur vice teacher (nt the Vcal Area Crdinatr). All vice students taking applied vice fr 4 credits (whether vice majrs r nt) are expected t attend:. The Quarterly Vice Recital.. Master classes ffered t vice students as scheduled. 3. The spring Vcal Shwcase 4. The apprpriate weekly Vcal Studi Class: either the Freshman and Sphmre Studi Class, r the Graduate, Senir and Junir Vice Studi Class. Vice students taking applied vice fr fewer than 3 credits are expected t attend half f the events abve. WEEKLY VOICE STUDIO CLASSES The Freshman and Sphmre Vice Studi Class: The purpse f this class is t prvide yung vice students sme basic guidance t aid them in their singing pursuits. All students in these grades are required t attend. Classes are structured arund a discussin tpic and at least ne perfrmance by individual singers. Vice Studi meets Wednesdays frm :00 t :00 pm in the Chir Rm. Attendance is taken and participatin is reflected in yur Applied Vice grade. If yu have any issues attending ne f these required events, please ntify yur vice teacher (nt the Vcal Area Crdinatr). The Graduate, Senir, and Junir Vice Studi Class meets Wednesdays frm :00 t :00 pm in the Small Recital Hall. This is an pprtunity t perfrm and wrk repertire in a public frum. Please dress up when yu are scheduled t sing. All vice students are invited t attend, and all vice students f vice lessns are required t attend and t perfrm at least nce a quarter. Exceptins t this rule will be made at the discretin f the Vcal Area Crdinatr. If yu are perfrming, put a cpy f music fr the pianist in Dr. Bridges faculty mailbx the Friday befre class, and bring a cpy fr the teacher leading Vice Studi that week. Fulfillment f this requirement is reflected in the student s Applied Vice grade. If yu have any issues attending ne f these required events, please ntify yur vice teacher (nt the Vcal Area Crdinatr). 5

QUARTERLY VOICE RECITAL A Quarterly Vice Recital is held at the end f every quarter. All students wh are studying vice fr 4 credits must attend. Students taking credits f vice shuld attend at least ne Quarterly Vice Recital the year they are studying. All 4 credit vice students will perfrm at ne f the three recitals given each year. An accmpanist will be prvided. Auditin attire is expected. credit students are als allwed t perfrm at their teacher s discretin. If yur teacher has scheduled yu t perfrm n a Quarterly Vice Recital, yu must furnish Dr. Bridges with a cpy f yur music and email him (abridges@depaul.edu) the fllwing infrmatin: Yur name, as yu wish it t appear n the prgram. The title f yur piece, including the larger wrk (pera, ratri) frm which it is taken, in prper prgram frmat. (Arias in qute fllwed by the pera/ratri, etc. in italics.) The pus/catalg number f the piece, e.g., Köchel, Hbken numbers. (use Grves Music Online fr this.) The date f the piece s cmpsitin. Yur cmpser s full name, alng with birth and death dates. These materials must be submitted by the deadline date psted each term in the Vice Calendar, r yu will nt be able t perfrm, a fact that will be reflected in yur Applied Vice grade. If yu have any issues attending ne f these required events, please ntify yur vice teacher (nt the Vcal Area Crdinatr). EVALUATION Yur grade (given by yur vice teacher) will be determined using the fllwing criteria: Cnsistent preparatins fr lessns Vcal imprvement Musical and artistic develpment Attendance (including lessns and all ther required vice classes and events) Jury perfrmance (with critiques by the vice faculty taken int cnsideratin) Prfessinalism Achievement in caching sessins (fr thse enrlled) Please cnsult the Applied Vice Syllabus yur teacher gives yu fr an in-depth explanatin f the expectatins f the vice faculty in evaluating yur applied vice wrk. A grade f I (Incmplete) fr private lessns is nly given in rare circumstances. The Incmplete must be made up in the fllwing quarter. If this is nt accmplished, the grade will autmatically change t F per university plicy. PIANISTS FOR LESSONS AND RECITALS Students are respnsible fr securing a pianist t play fr their lessns, rehearsals, and recitals. A list f recmmended pianists is available in the Vcal Area Cntacts sectin f this Handbk and frm Dr. Bridges (abridges@depaul.edu) wh crdinates the pianists in the Vcal Area. Vice students themselves pay the accmpanist fees, apprximately $360 per quarter. Be prepared t pay half f this fee by the end f the secnd week f the term and the secnd half at the end f the sixth week. Recital fees are by negtiatin with the pianist, guidelines f which are given in the Pianist Cntract in the appendix. 6

REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS FOR VOICE STUDENTS UNDERGRADUATE VOICE REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS REPERTOIRE TO BE MASTERED BY THE END OF YOUR UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES In the curse f yur undergraduate vcal studies at DePaul, yu shuld master (thrughly learn and memrize) the literature belw. This list cnstitutes a minimum amunt f repertire fr study. Yur vice teacher may add further repertire requirements. Yu must keep a current recrd f yur repertire n the Undergraduate Repertire Sheets prvided in the appendix, and a cpy f this frm is distributed t all new students. This frm is als available nline. At least six Italian and/r French arias frm the 7th and early 8th centuries. (Cavalli, Mnteverdi, Cesti, Lully, Scarlatti, etc.) At least fur English lute sngs and/r cntinu sngs. (Dwland, Blw, Purcell, etc.) At least eight sngs and/r arias frm the 8th century by late barque and classical cmpsers f the 8th century. (Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mzart, etc.) At least 4 German Lieder. (Schubert, Schumann, Mendelsshn, Brahms, Strauss, etc.) At least six French meldies. (Fauré, Debussy, Duparc, Pulenc, etc.) At least six American and British art sngs. At least tw vcal wrks in a language ther than English, French, German, r Italian. At least ne art sng cycle. At least fur arias/sngs in a demnstrably mdern idim, including rhythmic cmplexities, expanded tnality, atnality, etc. At least fur lighter sngs frm peretta, musical theater, etc. At least ne aria in each f these languages: English, French, German, and Italian. UNDERGRADUATE REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS BY YEAR Freshmen (First Year) Yu shuld study at least fur sngs and/r arias each quarter. During the curse f the year, study: Pieces in the language currently being studied in yur dictin class English-language repertire, which may include translatin sngs. (Grieg, Rachmaninff, etc.) Wrks in French, German, Spanish, etc., with yur vice teacher's apprval, if yu have the apprpriate language and dictin backgrund At least ne piece f 0th/st century music in a demnstrably mdern idim Sphmres (Secnd Year) Yu shuld study at least fur sngs and/r arias each quarter. During the curse f the year, study: Pieces in the language currently being studied in yur dictin class At least ne aria frm an pera r ratri At least ne English piece frm any style perid At least ne 0th/st century piece in any language in a demnstrably mdern idim Music fr the Petitin t Majr, if yu intend t majr in Vcal Perfrmance 7

(The repertire requirement is three selectins per quarter if yu are a senir level student enrlled in tw credits f vice instructin instead f fur.) During the curse f the year, study: At least ne aria frm an pera r ratri. Representative wrks in Italian, French, and German. At least ne English piece frm any style perid. At least ne 0th/st century piece in any language in a demnstrably mdern idim. One sng cycle. Music fr yur senir recital if yu are a majr in Vcal Perfrmance: 50-60 minutes f music in at least three languages and style perids We strngly encurage yu t study a vcal/instrumental chamber piece. T receive credit and faculty caching fr this selectin, enrll in Chamber Music. MASTER OF MUSIC DEGREE REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS Yu shuld study at least five wrks each quarter. In the curse f yur studies yu must learn: Representative wrks in Italian, French and German. At least ne aria frm an pera r ratri. At least ne English selectin frm any style perid. At least ne 0th/st century piece in any language. A sng cycle. Music fr yur masters recital: 50-60 minutes f music in at least three languages and style perids. We strngly encurage yu t study a vcal/instrumental chamber piece. T receive credit and faculty caching fr this selectin, enrll in Chamber Music. CERTIFICATE IN VOCAL PERFORMANCE REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS The purpse f this prgram is t prvide an intensive pst masters degree perfrmance experience fr a small number f highly accmplished singers. Since this is an individualized prgram, students are encuraged t specialize in the repertires best suited t their talents and prfessinal aspiratins. Students may include freign language study in their individualized prgram. A full-recital f at least 50 minutes is required fr all Perfrmance Certificate candidates. Repertire shuld be made in cnsultatin with yur teacher. 8

JURIES JURY REQUIREMENTS Freshmen and sphmres shuld list the entire repertire they have studied that quarter n the Jury Evaluatin Frm, with three wrks starred fr the jury t hear. One f the selectins shuld be a piece in the language that is being studied that term in Dictin Class. Yu may list yur Dictin Class pieces as pieces studied if yu have wrked them in yur lessns, but may star nly ne. Junirs, senirs, masters and perfrmance certificate students shuld list the repertire studied that quarter n the Jury Evaluatin Frm. Yu shuld star five wrks fr the jury t hear if yu are a vice majr. Nn-majrs r students taking -credit vice may star as few as three wrks. JURY PROCEDURES Juries take place during exam week f each quarter. All available vice faculty and staff are present at the juries. A sign-up sheet will be psted at the frnt desk abut a week befre befre juries. Be sure t check with yur teacher and yur pianist befre signing up! Undergraduates, sign up fr slt (six minutes) if yu are ding a regular undergraduate jury. Sign up fr slts (twelve minutes) if yu are ding a permissin-t-majr auditin r a recital-permissin hearing. Graduate juries are slts (twelve minutes) lng, including recital-permissin hearing. A cmpleted cpy f the jury frm shuld be placed in the mailbx f yur vice teacher, Dr. Esparza r Dr. Bridges by the date due indicated in the Vice Area Calendar. It is als acceptable t submit a pdf f the jury sheet t Dr. Bridges (abridges@depaul.edu) by the due date. The frms shuld include a list f repertire studied that term with pieces starred with an asterisk (selected with yur teacher) available fr the jury t hear. The frms are fund nline n the Schl f Music website (music.depaul.edu > Resurces > Cllege Office > Frms > Vcal Area). All jury music must be memrized, except ratri and mre extended wrks with ensemble. The jury cmments will be available t the teacher fr private cnference with the student. 9

RECITALS RECITAL REQUIREMENTS Students must be registered fr applied vice study the quarter in which a recital is given. Students must als be registered fr recital credit with the apprpriate recital curse number. All junir majrs in Vcal Perfrmance are required t perfrm a half-recital. Music Educatin majrs are encuraged t give a half-recital upn the anticipate cmpletin f 9 quarters f vice and the apprval f their vice teacher. Music fr the Junir Recital (30-35 minutes) must include repertire in at least three languages and style perids. MUSICAL COACHING FOR SINGERS Undergraduate vice majrs are required t take tw Musical Caching fr Singers classes APM 04 and APM 304 during their junir and senir years f study after successfully petitining t majr. Fr each f these classes they receive ten hurs f caching (five hurs per quarter) during the cmbined winter and spring terms. APM 04 is fr students, usually junirs, taking Musical Caching fr Singers fr the first time. APM 304 is fr students, usually senirs, wh have previusly taken APM 04. Each f these tw-term classes is wrth ne credit unit. Yu nly sign up nce in the winter quarter fr the apprpriate caching curse. With each f these classes yu will receive a grade f R at the end f the winter quarter and a final grade at the end f the spring quarter. Vcal students are encuraged t chse a wrk that invlves three r mre perfrmers and n cnductr. Other ptins fr a chamber wrk wuld be a significant multi-viced vcal piece, with r withut instruments, r a substantial chamber piece cnsisting f vice and ne ther instrument, excluding any keybard r ther fundamental instruments, such as lutes r guitars. Singers are especially encuraged t explre repertire that will expand their musicianship. Sme pssibilities include a Barque cantata, a 4-5th century plyphnic piece in which there is flexibility abut the cnfiguratin f vices and instruments n the varius parts, a piece fr vice and instruments, vcal chamber music, r a selectin frm the avant-garde repertire. Undergraduate vcalists are encuraged t enrll in Chamber Music (MEN 4). Each spring DePaul Schl f Music chral students have the pprtunity t auditin fr the Grant Park Music Festival s Apprentice Chrale. The Chrale is a select grup f singers wh perfrm with the Grant Park Festival Chrus and Orchestra in Millennium Park, and rehearse and perfrm a prgram f their wn under the leadership f Grant Park chrus master, Christpher Bell. DePaul students participating in this summer prgram receive a schlarship tward their tuitin in the fllwing fall quarter. Several alumni f this prgram have later earned regular prfessinal places in the Grant Park chrus. 4

OPERA AT DEPAUL The pera prgram at DePaul is an extra-curricular activity, available t students by auditin. All students with perfrmance awards are required t auditin. The purpse f the pera prgram is t prvide an educatinal and prfessinal perfrmance experience fr yung singers, and t serve the DePaul University cmmunity by prducing an elegant, thughtful, and meaningful artistic experience. Each academic year there are three peras accmpanied by the Opera Orchestra. Music must be memrized by the first rehearsal. Caching is prvided and scheduled befre the deadline t prepare the singers musically and linguistically. THE KLEINMAN VOCAL COMPETITION The Annual Kleinman Vcal Cmpetitin is pen t current Schl f Music vice students in gd standing. The Cmpetitin is held in the Cncert Hall during a Saturday r Sunday afternn at the end f the first r secnd week f classes, Spring Quarter, n a date t be annunced. Judging is by a team f three expert adjudicatrs chsen frm vice teachers nt wrking at DePaul. The award will be made nly if at least tw adjudicatrs agree n the recipient. A secnd prize may be awarded at the judges discretin. The Cmpetitin prvides a pianist wh will accmpany each cntestant. Each cntestant must sing tw sngs and ne aria r ratri sl, in cntrasting styles and in different languages. Cmpleted applicatin frms stating the intent t enter the Cmpetitin and the repertire that will be sung are due by the last day f classes in the Winter Quarter.
