SYNOPSIS Dirty Rotten Scoundrels springs to life in a bustling casino on the French Riviera. Among the glitz and glamour of the Casino, Lawrence, a con artist and general smooth talking tyke, is working a crowd of wealthy women with the intention of tricking them out of money. Lawrence is the centre of attention as women swoon over him, including the particularly keen Muriel. The mood is dampened as Lawrence s bodyguard, Andre, warns him that there is a new con artiste in town who has been dubbed The Jackal. Lawrence later contemplates the warning whilst travelling on a train. During his journey, he spies another fraudster at work, Freddy Benson. Freddy is in awe of Lawrence s riches and convinces Lawrence to show him the tricks of the trade. Despite Andre s words of warning about Freddy, Lawrence enlists Freddy s help as his latest target Jolene tries to force him to elope to Oklahoma. Posing as Lawrence s brother Ruprecht, the pair manage to convince the fanatical femme that Lawrence s brother is a heinous being, and thus the wedding is called off. Having experienced Freddy s impressive deception skills, Lawrence begins to think that the Riviera isn t big enough for the both of them. Challenging the newcomer to a race to get $50,000 from a woman, it is agreed that whoever loses will leave town. Enter the beautiful American Heiress, Christine Colgate. The second the tricksters lay eyes on her they decide to make her their target. Freddy jumps at the chance to defraud the heiress and imitates a handicapped veteran in need of money for a therapist, Dr. Shuffhausen. Taken in by Freddy s plight, Christine pledges the required $50,000. A delighted Freddy learns from Christine that Dr. Shuffhausen is also staying at the hotel, which leads him to great confusion. That is until he meets the good doctor who turns out to be Lawrence! Based on the ever popular 1988 cinematic classic starring Michael Caine and Steve Martin, a hilarious battle of cons promises to keep audiences laughing, humming and guessing to the end!

CHAIRMAN S WELCOME Welcome to SODS production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels what a hilarious show we have in store for you! Dirty Rotten Scoundrels sees SODS innovation continue with a new style of production, and we are very excited to bring this show to The Palace Theatre as an Essex première. The show is based on the 1988 film of the same name, combining wonderful humour, toe tapping songs, a beautiful jazzy score, the French Riviera and a certain je ne sais quoi. I would like to take this opportunity to thank every single person involved in the show for their incredible hard work, commitment and passion. I would also like to personally thank you for your continued support of SODS, without which we could not carry on enjoying this wonderful hobby of ours. We are nothing without an audience, so a heartfelt thank you for joining us today. Do please make a note in your diaries that we will be back here at the beautiful Palace Theatre in November for our production of Singin in the Rain another very exciting show, providing us with the opportunity to add a new spin to an old classic. All that remains to say is sit back and enjoy, the con is on! Ian Scoging Charity Bio Ryan Tolley was a fun loving and very talented young man who loved life and lived for drama and theatre, with dreams of performing in the West End or becoming a drama teacher. He had many friends who loved his sense of fun and his very caring nature. In 2009 at the age of 19, Ryan s dreams were taken away over night, when he was tragically diagnosed with leukaemia. He fought long and hard and went into remission in 2010. Unfortunately Ryan s recovery did not last long, and his illness returned that same December. After a 2 year battle, at just 22, Ryan lost his fight. Throughout his treatment, Ryan s bravery was second to none and he never felt sorry for himself only for his friends and family watching his battle. Before Ryan died, he asked if we could set up a charity as a legacy to help those like him and his family to cope financially, as well as bring comfort and support. In the last 4 years we have managed to raise around 30,000 through various fund raising events, which has gone towards helping individuals, families, organizations and at least 5 different hospices with specialist equipment, support and treatment, as well as helping with short breaks and getaways as a small release to the constant battle against this terrible disease. We would like to thank SODS for supporting our cause, and ask that you give what you can to really make a difference to these families lives. Thank you.

Ian Gilbert Artistic Director Clare Penfold Musical Director This is Ian s fifth show as part of the creative team for SODS and with each show comes new challenges, but nothing is quite so challenging as this one. Previous theatre credits include: Sister Act: The Devine Musical Comedy, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Hello Dolly! and Rock of Ages. Previous performance credits include: Hertz Klineman Rock of Ages, Sir Bedivere Spamalot, Billy Bigelow Carousel, Joey Sister Act, Dewy Legally Blonde, Sky Masterson Guys & Dolls, Steve Summer Holiday, Jacob La Cage Aux Folles, and Joe Casey Our House. Ian hopes you enjoy this Essex premiere of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and would like to thank everyone for their hard work, especially to his girls who have worked tirelessly on the production. Enjoy. Clare has been involved with local musical theatre for many years now, undertaking the role of Musical Director for groups including Little Theatre Company, Basildon Operatic Society, TTMS, Soloman Artistes, Arts Factory and Benfleet Operatic Society. Some of her favourite shows as Musical Director include Jekyll & Hyde, Guys & Dolls, Copacabana, West Side Story and Summer Holiday. Clare is an accomplished pianist, rehearsing with and accompanying groups such as Men2Sing and New City Voices a Chelmsford-based community choir. This involves numerous concerts, shows and charity events. In addition, she also offers private piano tuition. Clare has previously played in the band for various SODS productions and is delighted to take on the role of Musical Director for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. There are some fabulous numbers in this show and the cast have worked very hard perfecting the tricky harmonies.

Cassie Estall and Becki Wendes ~ Choreographers Originally from Chelmsford, Becki and Cassie joined Chelmsford s Young Generation as children before joining Chelmsford Operatic and Dramatic Society in their late teens. They are very pleased to be welcomed back to work with Southend Operatic for the second time. Their passion for dance started young and has continued into adulthood; having danced in shows such as Anything Goes, Witches of Eastwick, Copacabana, Crazy For You and 42nd Street. This is their second time choreographing together and they have enjoyed the opportunity to work on such a new and exciting show. They have loved working with SODS, who have welcomed them back with open arms, and would like to give a huge thank you to Ian, Clare and the cast for making the past few months so enjoyable. Becki and Cassie would like to give a special mention to their friends and family for their continued support and understanding. Scott Roche Lawrence Jameson This is Scott s second show with SODS, having played The Beadle in Sweeney Todd last year. He is delighted to be involved again and really hopes you enjoy the show. Over the years, Scott has been privileged to play some great roles including Sweeney Todd Sweeney Todd, Curly Oklahoma, Dracula Dracula, Audrey II Little Shop of Horrors, Ugly Honk, Tinman Wizard of Oz, Judas Jesus Christ Superstar, Othello Othello and most recently Leontes Winter s Tale to name a few. Having sung since an early age, he fulfilled a dream to sing the roles of Jean Valjean Les Miserables and The Phantom Phantom of the Opera in concert versions of his favourite shows. Scott would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who has supported him throughout this show, especially all of the cast and crew, his friends, family and his rock, Shazza. He hopes his mum is looking down and is glad that he kept on singing!.

David Gillett Freddy Benson Having played the role of Friedrich in The Sound of Music for SODS at the age of 11, David is proud to be returning over a decade later to play the role of Freddy Benson; a role made famous by Steve Martin in the film version of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. David is currently a Secondary Drama Teacher based in Thurrock, having previously gained a First Class Degree in Performing Arts from De Montfort University in Leicester. Prior to this production, David s theatre credits include: Alan Dangle and Alfie One Man, Two Guvnors with Early Doors Productions, Emmett Legally Blonde, TJ Sister Act, Benny Southstreet Guys & Dolls, Simon Zealotes Jesus Christ Superstar, and Michael The Witches of Eastwick with CAODS in Chelmsford. David would finally like to thank the members of SODS for their welcome to the company and is looking forward to performing with them again in the future.

HEATHER COOPER Christine Colgate Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is Heather s 11th production with SODS, performing in the society as Sarah Brown in Guys & Dolls, Michelle in Sister Act, Carrie Pipperidge in Carousel and Regina in Rock of Ages. She is now really excited to get stuck into another comedy performance in this brilliant and challenging role. Outside of the society Heather is a year one primary school teacher. She has very recently got engaged to her lovely fiancé Mitch at a theatre in New York, where he proposed to her in front of the whole audience! Heather has really enjoyed sharing the stage with the super talented Scott and David during this production, and would like to thank everyone in the cast for an incredible 3 months of rehearsals. Heather wishes everyone a super show week!

IAN SCOGING Andre Thibault When Ian successfully auditioned for the role of Andre, he didn t realise quite how involved he would be, but it has been an immense privilege working closely with Scott, learning so much in the process, and Ian has thoroughly enjoyed laughing and cuddling with Annette. Ian wishes to thank the creative team for their amazing vision, their support and great fun at rehearsals, and Kerry (Dance Captain) and Aidan (Assistant Dance Captain) for their endless encouragement and Lego building. So get ready for your roller coaster ride, and Ian might even buy you a pencil! Ian s credits for SODS: Father Christian Rock of Ages, Rudolf Reisenweber Hello, Dolly!, Jonas Fogg Sweeney Todd, Mr Bascombe Carousel, Joey Sister Act (& winner of best facial hair), Mercedes the Magnificent Double award winning La Cage Aux Folles, Harry the Horse - Guys & Dolls, Jean D Arme award winning Summer Holiday, and Mordcha Fiddler on the Roof.

Annette McGibbon Muriel Eubanks Annette has been involved in musical theatre for over 40 years, playing numerous leading and supporting roles, as well as enjoying many shows in the chorus. Annette s first major role was Julie Jordan - Carousel and she has since progressed to more mature leads and some deliciously interesting character parts, the most memorable being Felicia - The Witches of Eastwick, Anna The Merry Widow and Sally Follies. She has laughed, cried, kissed, screamed, hugged, slapped, tap danced, groped, performed the can-can, been pushed into a coffin, tipped down a chute, vomited spiders, cart wheeled and played an 85 year old nymphomaniac. She can now add being seduced by a Prance to the list! Annette would like to dedicate this performance to her four year old grandson, Daniel who is developing the family enthusiasm and talent for performing.

Laura Gilbert Jolene Oakes Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is Laura s seventh show with SODS, fourth in her position as Vice Chairman, and the part of Jolene Oakes has become her number one favourite! After joining the society for La Cage Aux Folles in Spring 2014, Laura has had the pleasure of being a Nun in Sister Act, Heavenly Friend in Carousel and most recently a dancer in Hello, Dolly! and Rock of Ages, however this is the most fun Laura has had preparing for a show with SODS. She would like to thank the creative team for this opportunity, as well as the extremely talented cast and apologises to all for the most annoying voice over the past few months, but she is now ready to blow your heads clean off!
