0 Études # #5 Teaching and ehearsal Suggestions Étude (AY-tude rhymes ith tune or cue) is a French ord hich means study In music, an étude is a composition designed to help students develop a specific skill Études # #5 and their corresponding exercises allo the ringers to practice these specific skills: ing Damp Sing Thum Damp/Pluck/Mallet Martellato/Martellato-ift The music in each étude remains the same Only the techniques change The folloing ringers page has five exercises, each designed to teach the skill needed for a specific étude Ask all ringers to pretend they are ringing the notes in the space and on the line used in each exercise Have the ringers learn each exercise and then ring the corresponding étude Teach Exercise # and Étude # folloed y Exercise # and Étude # Save Exercises # #5 and Études # #5 until the ringers have more ringing experience The staccato dot, used in Exercise #, may e used to indicate pluck, thum damp, or mallet (ells on the tale) The size of the handell ill help determine hich technique to ask the ringers to use If mallets are used for this exercise, teach ringers to use them properly Handchimes should not e thum damped or plucked, ut they may e finger damped See Finger Damp (p 6) for an explanation of finger damping handchimes DO NOT USE MAETS ON HANDCHIMES WHICH AE ESTING ON THE TABE Handchime choirs may do Exercise #5 and Étude #5 y finger damping quarter notes and ringing half notes and hole notes Manufacturers strongly advise against using percussive techniques such as martellato and martellato-lift ith handchimes q q q q q Étude Points to Ponder There are no clefs used in these exercises, therefore the notes do not have specific letter names Ask all ringers to pretend that they are ringing the notes in the second space and on the middle line The loer ell/chime is in the left hand; the higher ell/chime is in the right hand Before ringing Étude #, remind the ringers: ing exactly on the eat Play all ells/chimes together Shoulder-damp a ell/chime on the first eat of each measure if it is not rung again on that eat Étude # is a study in damping Teach the ringers to use a circular ringing motion, to ring the ell/chime to the shoulder, and to damp precisely on the rests Have the ringers count the eats aloud hile ringing these exercises, then ring each exercise again and have them count silently hile ringing To help the ringers, in Étude # the eats have een given for the first four measures A ringer ho cannot count a piece of music correctly cannot ring it correctly! After the ringers have learned an exercise as a group, ask for volunteers to perform it as a solo ringer or as part of a duet or trio This ill uild self-esteem and allo the ringers to learn from one another and to support and teach one another
