Melbourne Recital Centre is one of the world s finest spaces for listening to and sharing music in all its forms. It is the best place to encounter music that enriches, surprises, entertains, challenges and moves, presented by the finest artists from Australia and around the world. The Centre s annual self-presented program of over 300 concerts and events is supported entirely by philanthropy, box office and sponsorship, bringing transformative shared experiences of music to over 70,000 people from all walks of life, both at the Centre and increasingly in community settings throughout Victoria and online. Melbourne Bach Choir & Orchestra Ali McGregor, Music Play 2017 ACCESS TO THRILLING MUSIC FOR EVERYONE It gave me something, do you know what I mean? Something in here (indicating heart area). It was indescribable. I don t have a word for it but it gave me something. A PLATFORM FOR THE VERY BEST I was uplifted and excited by the quality of the music and the performers who were marvellous. They threw themselves into the music and their performance really gave the imagination a boost. NURTURING YOUNG ARTISTS Enrich your life and the lives of others through music. The playing of the young pianist was awe inspiring. It completely lifted my heart and made me feel so proud of our young musicians. I felt a tremendous privilege in being part of the community that evening. A PLACE OF UNPARALLELED MUSICAL VIBRANCY Patrons ensure the breadth, diversity and quality of our artist program of over 300 self-presented concerts and events. Exhilarating! Astounding musicianship and a moving interpretation. (Melbourne Recital Centre) is a concert hall that is so fine that as a member of the audience I feel incorporated into the music. It is as though I am living more vividly. REACHING BEYOND THE CENTRE Join our dynamic donor community and impact the lives of musicians and music lovers. The outstanding quality and dynamic of Melbourne Recital Centre s music programming is really appreciated by our community. It puts you in a different life a different feeling.

James Vincent McMorrow Ensuring Melbourne Recital Centre remains a vibrant place for music and a source of pride for all Victorians.

3 Donors play a vital role in ensuring the breadth and scale of the Centre s musical offering and equip it to extend these experiences through artist interviews, program notes, talks, lectures and demonstrations. Together we are building a community that inspires creativity through profound experiences with music. A place of unparalleled musical vibrancy Almost every day, people of all ages and from all walks of life gather at Melbourne Recital Centre to be moved by music. Punch Brothers To me the Centre is extraordinary. The choice of performers and variety of music options married with good acoustics are really something special and I appreciate the special relationships I have with people at the Centre. They enhance the experience for me. MARIA SOLA It s the diversity that I love about Melbourne Recital Centre. There is so much interesting music from many cultures. It has a unique position in Melbourne s music scene. SNOWE LI The Centre immediately has a distinctively Melbourne feel about it. It is part of the DNA of the city and inspired me to make my first philanthropic gift. JAMES OSTROBURSKI

5 With the help of donors, the Centre reaches out to close to 2000 people each year through its Share the Music ticket and transport subsidy scheme and Music Always aged care program. Delivered in partnership with over 25 community organisations, including schools, aged care, disability and social welfare providers, many thousands more are enriched by our programs for children and families. Access to thrilling music for everyone The emotional power and enrichment benefits of music are gifts to be shared. More people should be supporting this great place with its wonderful sound, intimacy and diversity of activity. PETER HORDERN My fellow trustees and I reflected on the impact that a visit to the Centre would have on people, particularly young people, who would not otherwise have this opportunity. How inspiring would it be for them to hear leading musicians play in this beautiful building, to talk to them about the music, to see what is possible with practice, hard work and dedication? DR JANE GILMOUR OAM, TRUSTEE, THE WILLIAM BUCKLAND FOUNDATION Music Play 2017

7 With programs dedicated to jazz, chamber music, international recitals, cabaret, children s music, new music and contemporary pop and rock, the Centre is at the vanguard of global music. It is home to many fine ensembles who present a diverse program of superb events that together with the Centre s own programming are enjoyed by around 200,000 concert-goers each year; and hosts close to 100 international ensembles annually. A platform for the very best The Centre is a beacon to the very best artists from Australia and around the world. Presenting the very best orchestras from around the world, alongside the best of Australian music is what makes Melbourne Recital Centre the heart of the increasingly vibrant Arts Precinct. YVONNE VON HARTEL AM & ROBERT PECK AM World class music played in award winning spaces with sublime acoustics and then afterwards, sitting with the same diverse artists to hear how they collaborate on their work and what inspires them. This is the Melbourne Recital Centre for us. THE HON JUSTICE MICHELLE GORDON & THE HON KENNETH HAYNE AC QC Daniil Trifonov, Great Performers 2017

9 From master classes to competitions, commissions to workshops and a fellowship program for gifted secondary students, the Centre s artist development initiatives educate and challenge young musicians. We offer young Victorians unique opportunities to learn from the best in the world, collaborate with Australia s finest ensembles and perform in the Centre s world class performance spaces. All of these are essential to the development of any musician and support Melbourne s vibrant musical landscape. These initiatives are made possible through donations to the Centre s Artist Development and Master Class Leadership Circles with new initiatives supported by the Elisabeth Murdoch Creative Development Fund. Nurturing young artists Opportunities for young Victorians to learn from the very best. I ve always been interested in encouraging young people. I m delighted my support allows students to add marketing, writing and presentation skills to their bows, along with exceptional musical talent. ANDREW WHEELER Melbourne Recital Centre has been my favourite venue for musical experience since its inception. My late husband and I wanted to see international artists teaching advanced local students. Our support of the Centre s master classes gives practical support that develops our collective music future. CATHY LOWY Xuefei Yang Master Class

11 Sharing music with those who for many reasons find it difficult to attend Melbourne Recital Centre is an increasingly important part of the Centre s strategy. To do this we are partnering with regional Victorian presenters to enable superb musicians to be heard in live performance across the state and ensure regionally-based audiences are also part of our extended community of music lovers. Establishing a digital concert hall that enables the Centre s music to be streamed, heard and appreciated by an increasingly global audience is also a priority. Reaching beyond the Centre Working to realise the limitless potential for musicians to move, inspire and educate. Melbourne Recital Centre and its music can lead the way in innovative forms of outreach like digital broadcast that will reshape how our community and its musicians come together to share and be inspired by music. The Centre s digital recordings, webcasts and new performance opportunities will offer an infinite capacity to engage all people in the life-enhancing benefits of music that mean so much to me. NAOMI MILGROM AO This is an institution always thinking of new ways to deliver and new territories at which to arrive. The Centre touches and changes lives, as it has and does ours. PETER JOPLING AM QC & DR SAM MANDENG Audience members for the Centre s Learning and Access programs
