"These three operas were the first real pieces of theatrical arts that I've watched, and I have engendered a newfound interest for them. I will no longer be visiting movie theatres as frequently; instead I will be seizing every opportunity that I have to see a story unfold on stage." - Student "Every year I have a positive and joyful experience sharing opera with my students thanks to the many programs and support incentives offered by the Hawaii Opera Theatre." -Teacher "The music was incredible. I think this is an experience everyone, not only kids, should experience. When you watch the opera, you get pulled into a whole different world. It's amazing! I just wanted to say thank you once more for bringing these operas to Hawaii and that I can't wait to go and see another one." -Student

2018-2019 Season QUINN KELSEY & FRIENDS HOT announces a very special benefit concert, Quinn Kelsey & Friends. Often recognized as the Rigoletto and Verdi Baritone of his generation, Hawaii s Quinn Kelsey has starred with some of the biggest companies in the US including The Metropolitan Opera (New York), Washington National Opera (Washington D.C.), San Francisco Opera, and Lyric Opera of Chicago. Kelsey s demand and popularity extends overseas, having most recently performed with the Melbourne Symphony (Australia), Oper Frankfurt (Germany), and the Royal Opera House (England). Kelsey will be joined on stage in this special benefit for the company by Mezzo-Soprano Deanna Pauletto, Tenor Riccardo Iannello and Soprano Leslie Goldman. The singers will be accompanied by Maika i Nash on the piano. HOT is offering a very special OFE program for both benefit concerts: Friday, August 24, 2018 at 7:30pm, and Sunday, August 26, 2018 at 4:00pm. Please see the special Benefit Order Form for more information. ROMEO & JULIET by Charles Gounod (sung in French) Based on William Shakespeare's tragic love story, Gounod's opera centers around a long-standing feud between two of Verona's wealthiest families, the Capulets and the Montagues. A sparkling, vibrant love develops between two of the children. In secret, the young lovers marry. And in that joyful union the seeds of sorrow are sown...their tragic course revealed. Gounod's lush score brings the romance to life in this timeless masterpiece. Often parodied in sitcoms and movies, this work was the basis for Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story. Romeo & Juliet's OFE performance will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 7:00pm. LA TRAVIATA by Giuseppi Verdi (sung in Italian, 3 Acts) La Dames aux Camelias, a semi-autobiographical play by Alexandre Dumas, fils, is the basis of this opera. Alfredo falls deeply in love with the courtesan Violetta. The young man convinces her of his sincerity and the two become a couple. They move to the suburbs, but Violetta's past gets in the way of family matters, and she sacrifices their relationship for Alfredo's family. The couple is later united, but it's too late, as the young woman is near death from consumption. This work is an audience favorite for its compelling story and masterful music, and helps launch the realism movement in opera. La Traviata's OFE performance will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2018 at 7:00pm.

Other Education Programs HOT OPERA EXPRESS Hawaii Opera Theatre takes the show on the road to schools, libraries, and other locations during the school year. Next year, the company will bring a kid-friendly version of The Barber of Seville to schools on O`ahu and the Neighbor Islands. Follow the adventures of that crafty barber, Figaro, as he outwits old Dr. Bartolo and plays matchmaker to the beautiful Rosina and the dashing Count Almaviva. The show includes talented singers, live piano accompaniment, a set, costumes, props, opportunities for audience participation, and more. ORVIS YOUNG VOICES STUDIO This exciting new program offers high school students the opportunity to improve their skills as performers through classes and workshops covering areas such as vocal technique, diction, repertoire, acting, movement and more. Participants work with HOT s professional staff as well as guest artists. HOT RESIDENCY This award-winning program turns a class, grade level, or an entire school into an opera-production company. With assistance from the professionals at HOT, students, faculty, and staff are coached on developing their own opera or producing adaptations of famous operas and operettas. MAE Z. ORVIS OPERA STUDIO Each year, local singers audition to become members of the Hawaii Opera Theatre s Mae Z. Orvis Opera Studio. The Studio offers singers opportunities to work with opera professionals on the HOT staff as well as singers, coaches and other industry professionals to further develop their skills. PLEASE KOKUA. Opera For Everyone is a service which is provided for Elementary through High School students and some college students. It is imperative to the survival of the program that only students, their teachers, and necessary chaperones use the tickets provided through this program. Use of tickets other than as intended by the Opera For Everyone program takes opportunities away from other interested students and our box office. Thank you for your help. Opera For Everyone Intern Program Designed for High School and college students interested in the arts, the Opera For Everyone Intern Program allows participants a hands-on experience working with a professional opera company. Positions vary in the type of time commitment and activity performed but ALL positions require individuals who are very responsible and reliable. Participants in most areas of the program are given assignments that are directly related to the success of a given production and/or performance. A short description of each area follows: Wigs & Makeup Must attend several workshops with wig and makeup technicians. Interns are assigned to work on at least one production and must be available for all dress rehearsals and performances. Supernumerary Must be available for evening and weekend rehearsals and for all performances of a show. (Supernumeraries will be on stage during the OFE evening.) Office Other Experience working in the HOT offices. Mostly clerical but other experiences as well. Must be available for a set time each week. May also be assigned back stage duties during performances. Interns have been included in other areas depending upon experience, desire and availability. Please inquire if there is an interest in something that we have not listed. If students are interested in this opportunity and are very responsible and reliable, please feel free to nominate them. It is best to nominate students soon after receiving this mailing. We often have more students apply than we can accommodate, and the more popular areas are taken very quickly. If you would like more information, please contact Erik Haines, 596-7372 ext 207 or Blythe Kelsey, 596-7372 ext 205.
