Should students be allowed to listen to music while studying? NO! by: Zoe Shepard Often singers and musicians use music as an outlet to relieve stress and to forget about the troubles of everyday life. This is the same for those who listen to their music. However, is listening to music during everyday activities detrimental or beneficial? More specifically, should you listen to music while studying? Listening to music while studying puts students at a disadvantage. One of the major reasons why listening to music while studying negatively affects a student s ability to study is that it hinders comprehension. According to edutopia.org, in one of his more recent studies, Perham says, Reading while listening to music, especially music with lyrics, impairs comprehension. In this case, it s spoken lyrics, not acoustical variation that impairs productivity. You ve got semantic information from the lyrics. Perham goes on to say that, If you can understand the lyrics, it doesn t matter whether you like it or not, it will impair your performance of reading comprehension. Listening to music with lyrics while studying impairs a student s ability to comprehend what they are reading or writing. This idea was also shared by Clifford Ness, a professor at Stanford, who stated, Music with lyrics is very likely to have a problematic effect when you are writing or reading (college.usatoday.com). This information shows how listening to music, especially those with lyrics, can deleteriously affect your performance. As you can see listening to music while studying may impair your cognitive abilities and provides more harm than benefit. Those opposed to this theory argue that music can be very beneficial in aiding students with studying. They say music improves mood, making you more susceptible to studying. In addition, they say that music provides a relaxing and nurturing environment allowing you to retain more information. Some may also argue that your brain can pay attention to the environment as well as to the music that you are listening to. Despite these claims, there are many flaws in the logic. According to grandslam.org,...not all research has agreed with the aforementioned study and some researchers have found that music tends to be more distracting than beneficial. Therefore, the answer is inconclusive. This disprove the claim that music elevates mood and also proves that music is more of a distraction than an aid. Listening to music impairs cognitive abilities, is more of a distraction than a relation method, and is a drawback when it comes to the context-dependent phenomenon. As you can see, listening to music has many negative effects and is more detrimental than beneficial. Hopefully in the near future, we can see that silence is key, and that we shouldn t depend on technology to assist us in everyday tasks that we are fully capable of completing on our own. 5
