SomeGuidelinesforDirectingaSuccessfulProduction Ifyoureadnothingelseinthishandbook,itisimperativethatyoureadat leastthesesixguidelinestodirectingastagetroupeshow.theyarethemostbasic bulletpointsofthemostimportantrulescontainedinthishandbook. 1. Whenyouvisitsomeoneelse shouse,playbytheirrules.weareguestsin everyspaceoncampus.weareveryprivilegedguestsatthestudent TheateratAgganisArenaandextremelyprivilegedguestsatTheSpace. Followtherulesforthesespacesandbecourteoustotheadministration andb&giftheycomeaskingquestions. 2.MajorTheaterRules: a. Maximumseatingcapacityis101.Thereisnoflexibilitywiththis number.youmayhaveannumberofpeopleonstage,butonly4 peopleinthebooth(typicallythelightingdesigner,thesound Designer,andtheirassistants). b.pathstoemergencyexitsmustbekeptclearatalltimes,exitsigns mustbeplainlyilluminatedandfirealarmsmustbevisibleatall times. c.therearenoflamesofanykindallowedinthetheater.ever. d.youmaynotuseanydevicethatsuspendsparticlesintheairsuch asfogmachines,saws,dryice,etc. e.makesurethetheateriskeptclean,lockedattheendoftheday, andmakesureyousigninandoutinthelog. 3.KeeptheE Boardinformedatalltimesabouteventsanddecisions,evenif theyseemunimportantorobvious.thee Boarddoesnotliketohear aboutstagetroupefromeric,whointurnheardaboutstagetroupefrom hissuperiors.itismuchbetterforinformationtotravelupthechainof commandthandown. 4.Youractionssetaprecedentforyourcastandthemembership.Be professional,takecareofyourproductionandyourcastmembersand strivetosetapositivetoneforyourshowandthegroupasawhole. EncourageyourcasttoattendGeneralMeetingsandTroupefunctions, suchasspecialprojects. 5.Everyoneonyourproductionis,andmustbe,ateam.Yourprimarygoalis toworktogetherwithyourcastandcrewtocreatethebestpossible producttofulfillyourartisticvision.whileyouareresponsibleforthis vision,youworkwithyourproducerandtechnicaldirectortoaccomplish yourgoals theydonotworkforyou. 2

6.Yourshowispartofagroup;itisnotanindividualentity.Whileyourgoal shouldalwaysbetomakethebestshowpossible,yourshowshouldstrive tomaketroupethebestperformingartsgroupitcanbe.youareworking withayourshow suniqueteam,thee Board,andtheothershowsto makethistroupe sbestseason. 3

TheFirstWeek TheFirstGeneralMeeting Atthefirstmeetingoftheseason,dresssharpandshowupreadytopresent yourshowtothemembership.youwillhavethreeminutestotellthemembership aboutyourshowandconvincethemthattheyshouldauditionand/ortechforyou. Thiswillbeverysimilartoyourpitchoftheshowbeforethevotinglastsemester, butthistimeyou retryingtoconvincethemembershiptobeapartoftheshow,not justtoletyoudoit.beginbyintroducingyourself.youshouldthenmentionthecast breakdown,brieflyexplainingeachoftheroles.youshouldmentionverybrieflythe technicalneedsoftheshow.mostofall,youshouldconveytothemembershipwhy Troupeisdoingthisshow,expressingyourartisticvisionfortheproduction;tryto makethemexcitedaboutbeingapartoftheshow.trytomentionanyrelevant informationaboutyourauditionsthatvaryfromthestandardauditionprocedure. Afterthreeminutes,themembershipwillhavetheopportunitytoaskquestions. Auditions Ah,auditions.Youaresolelyresponsibleforcastingyourshow,thoughyou mayillicithelpfromanyonenotauditioningfortheseason.troupe saudition procedureallowsanymemberwhohaspaidduestoauditionforany/allmainstage showsandspecialprojects.typically,auditionerswillsign inwiththetreasurer, thensignupontheindividualsheetofeachoftheshowstheyareauditioningfor.an E Boardmemberwillgivethemanindividualauditionsheetforeachshow.You shouldprepareasheetwiththecastbreakdownonitsopeoplearefamiliarwiththe typesofcharactersyouarelookingfor;youcanalsoincludeanyadditional questionsyouwanttoask.asyougothroughauditions,youwillcalloutnamesfrom thelistandgivethemapartner(ornoneorseveral)andhavethempracticeacold readingofyourchoosing.thoughvariancesfromthisprocedureareallowed, whateverprocessyouchoose,besuretokeepyourauditionrequirementstoa minimumtofacilitatetheauditionprocess.anotheroptionistoleavegenderspecificmonologuesatthesign intablethateachauditionercanpickupastheysign in. Afterthreedaysofauditions,youwillmakeacallbacklistofthoseactorsyou wishtoseeagain.nobodycanbecastwithoutbeingcalledback.sinceallcastingis donefromageneralpoolandnobodycanbeintwomainstageshowsinthesame semester,makesureyoucallbackmorepeoplethanyouneed. AuditionsareusuallyMondaythroughWednesdayfrom6pm 10pm,with callbacksonthursdayfrom6pm 10pm.Auditionsarelongandcanquitestressful ifyoudon tgoinarmedwiththisadvice: 4

Prepare!Makesureyouhaveplentyofcopiesofcoldreadings especiallya lotofsceneswith2females(ifpossible),asyouwilllikelyhavemorewomen auditioningthanmen. Arriveat5pmtosetupyourroomsoyoucanbeginpromptlyat6pm. Movequickly.Youhavealotofpeopletoaudition,sodon tspendtoomuch timewithonlyafewpeople.makesureyougettoeveryone. Don tworryifeveryoneyouauditiondoesn treadforthepartyouare consideringthemforatthefirstaudition;that swhatcallbacksarefor.the primaryauditionisatestofskillandinmostcases,youwillknowrightaway ifanactorisrightforanypartinyourshowregardlessofwhattheyread. Auditionswillendpromptlyat10pmeachnight. Noexceptions! TheCastingMeeting Youmighthavehearddarktalesfromcastingmeetings,butthetruthis, castingcanandshouldbeaquickandpeacefulprocessifyourememberthesetwo things: 1.Thegoalofthecastingmeetingistocastfourgreatshows,notonestellar show.certainlyyouwantallofyourfirstchoices,butasyourshowispart ofagroupandnotanindividualentity,youmustybewillingtobeflexible inyourcastingdecision. 2.Don tmarryyourselftoanysingleactor.noactorhasthepotentialto makeorbreakyourshow.ifyoufeelthatistrue,youdon tknowhowto doyourjobproperly.youwillseeoverahundredpeopleduring auditions;somewillbeawful,somewillbeextraordinary,butmostwill bejustfine.yourjobisadirectoristohoneyouractorsintobelievable characters.thatskillshouldextendbeyondasingleactor. Aprovenmethodtomakecastingeasyforadirectoristomakeachartof eachofyourfirst,second,third,andfourthchoicesforeachroleinyourshow.you maynotnecessarilyfillinfourchoicesforeachrole,andthatisfine,butbesureto haveatleasttwo,threeifpossible,foreachrole.asahelpfulnote,trynottoput anyoneonthechartthatyouwouldnotwillinglywelcomeinyourcast.thiswill helpyoufocusandprepareyourselftomakecrucialsacrificesbeforethemeeting begins.inotherwords,makesurethatyou re100%satisfiedwithyoursecondchoicecast. Followingcallbacks,alloftheDirectors,AssistantDirectors,theStudent GroupAdvisor,andanon auditioning,unbiasede Boardmemberwillassemblefor thecastingmeeting.thee Boardmemberwillserveasthemediatorandwill administerthemeeting.oncethemeetingbegins,eachdirectorwillreadhisfirst 5

choiceactorforeachrole.whilethefirstdirectorisreadinghisfirst choicecast,all otherdirectorswillsay conflict ifanameappearsontheirfirst choicelists.the otherdirectorswillsay possibleconflict ifanameappearsontheirsecond,third, orfourth choicelist.thisprocesscontinuesuntilallthedirectorshavereadtheir first choicelists. Themediatorwillthenbeginaforumofdiscussionwhereeachconflictwill beaddressedonebyoneuntilallconflictshavebeenresolved.onceallconflicts havebeenresolved,eachdirectorwillreadhisfinallistagain,toensurethatnobody appearsonmorethanonelist. Regardingconflictresolution: Themajorityoftheconflictresolutionstrategyreliesnotonthemediator, butonthegoodwillandamiabilityofthedirectors.forexample,ifdirectorawants tocastanactorinasmallerrole,whiledirectorbwantsthesameactorforalead role,commonsenseandetiquettedictatethatdirectorarelinquishtheactorto DirectorB.Majorconflictsarisewhenanactorisincontentionformultiplerolesof thesamesizeandadiscussionmustbestartedtoresolvetheconflict.iftheconflict isnotresolvedbetweenthedirectors,themediatorwillmakethedecision.the mediatormayaskwhateverquestionshefeelswillpreparehimtomakea responsiblecastingdecision.themediator sdecisionisfinal.itistheopinionof StageTroupethatcastingdecisionsmadebythemediatoradverselyaffectsthe spiritoftheatricalproductionandmustbepracticedonlyintherarestof circumstances. **NOTE:Alldiscussionthattakesplaceinthecastingroomstaysinthecasting room.informationthatleavesthecastingmeetingcanonlyhurtfeelings nothing more.forthatparamountreason,itisstrictlyforbiddentodiscussthemeeting afterishasended. TheTechMeeting UsuallyontheFridayofauditionweek,theTechnicalAdvisorwillcallatechnician s meetingatthespace.youarerequiredtoattendtodiscuss,ingreaterdetail,your artisticvisionfortheshow,notingthetechnicaldemandsofyourshow.itishere thatyourmentionifyouneedafour storyrotatingsetorifyouneedsixteen matchingdresses.thetawillmakeeveryefforttoassignthepropertechniciansto eachshowbasedonyourpresentationoftheshow stechnicalneeds. 6

NowYourShowIsOffandRunning! Firstandforemost,youshouldmakecopiesofyourshow sscriptforyour actors,stagemanager(s),td(s),andothertechies.technically,makingphotocopies ofascriptthatyoubuyatabookstoreorborrowfromalibraryisillegal.however, whatstagetroupedoesn tknow,won thurtit.inotherwords,ifyoumakecopiesof thescriptonyourown,whowouldknow?oncethescriptsarehandedout,havea read throughofthescriptwiththeactors.itisencouragedthatyouinviteyour technicalstafftotheread throughaswellsothattheymaybecomefamiliarwith you,thecast,andtheshow.youshouldalsoarrangeatimewithyourtdtohavea techmeetingsoyoucanmeetyourtechstaffandstartexchangingideas. ItisyourresponsibilitytoschedulerehearsalswithyouractorsandStage Managers.YoumustinformtheVicePresidentofyourrehearsalschedulesothathe mayreserveuniversityspacesforyourrehearsals.youwillbeassignedroomson campusforthetimesanddaysyouspecify.therearemanydifferentwaysto rehearseashow,noneofwhichwillbeoutlinedhere.you llhavetopickupahow to directingbookforthat;justrememberthatyourresponsibilityistoyourcastandto StageTroupetohaveawell rehearsedshowonopeningnight. Aspreviouslystated,yourshowandyourcastmembersareapartofStage Troupe.StageTroupeistheoldestandlargestperformingartsgroupatthe University.Itfollowsoverahalf century sworthoftraditionofproducing wonderfultheaterforthebucommunity,andofbeingafungroupwhereeveryone canparticipateintheater,learn,andenhancetheircollegeexperience.itisthehope ofeverye Boardthatyouinstillinyourcastandcrewthefeelingthattheyareapart ofthetroupefamily.itisimperativethatyouencourageyourcasttocometo GeneralMeetings;theyarethemeansbywhichwekeepthegrouprunninganditis importantforthemembershiptoshowtheirsupportofthegroupasawhole. EncouragethemtoattendallStageTroupefunctionssuchasCombats!,Special Projects,andotherevents.Internally,encourageyouractorstobondwiththeir castmatesbyorganizingeventswithyourcastsuchasmovienights,parties,tripsto theaterinboston,sittingtogetheratothertroupeshowsintheseason,etc.finally, tryyourbesttoincludethetechnicalstaffinallbondingactivities.oftentheyare involvedwithseveralproductionsatonce,butit simportanttocreateafeelingof togethernesswithinyourshow,amongalloftheshowsintheseason,andwithin StageTroupe. 7

ProductionHeads EveryStageTroupeshowwillhavethreedefinedproductionheads:the Director,theTechnicalDirector,andtheProducer.Thethreeofyouareresponsible fortheareasdesignatedtoyouinthebelowdefinitionsandareresponsiblefor workingtogethertoservethebestinterestoftheproductionuntilit scomplete. TheE Board:TheE Boardisyourbestfriend.Whilenotanofficialproductionhead byanymeans,thee Boardfunctionsasanadvisoryboardandaresourceforyour production.itsaimistoensurethatfourproductionsgoupwithaslittleheadache aspossible.ifanythinggoeswrong,orifyouhaveanyproblemsorquestions,be theyartistic,personal,orprocedural,thee Boardistheretoofferguidance.For example,ifthereissomecostumeorpropthatyourproductionsstaffcan tfind,tell thee Boardandthey llworkonit.ifyourunintoaconflictamongactors,they ll offeradviceorstepinifnecessarytoresolvetheconflict. Director:Youwillformulateanartisticconcepttopresenttotheproductionstaff andyouareresponsibleforallareasofproductionandkeepingcommunication openbetweenthestaff.thedirectorisresponsibleforcastingtheshowandfor solvingcastproblems.tedirectorisresponsibleforschedulingandholding rehearsalsandpreparingtheactorsfortheperformance.
