3 ABSTRACT This paper is an analysis of the main character s thought of Edgar Allan Poe s short story entitled The Black Cat. The analysis of the character s thought will be done through a stylistic approach, discussed by Geoffrey Leech and Michael Short, called the presentation of thought. This stylistic approach includes the elements of free direct thought (FDT), direct thought (DT), free indirect thought (FIT), indirect thought (IT), and the last is narrative report of a thought act (NRTA). For supporting the analysis, there are some valuable sources of theory that used such as from books especially about stylistics, and the thought presentation. In brief, this paper will make readers know and understand more over about The Black Cat short story that is about the character s mind.
