Arcade Middle School Band Handbook Arcade Middle School Band 2017/2018 Thank you for joining the Arcade Middle School Band! The satisfaction that comes from learning to play music as part of an ensemble is an experience that will have a rewarding and positive impact on your life for many years to come! In other words, you are going to have SO MUCH FUN!!! There are certain expectations that must be met in order for a music program to be successful. If you have any questions or need information, please refer to this handbook for the answers. If you can t find the answer here, please contact me. Donna Pool, Director dpool@sanjuan.edu https://www.sanjuan.edu/domain/2437 work: 971-7300 Cell: 916-607-7533 (text is best) Academic Grading Policy Practice Records (15%): Students are required to practice at least 100 minutes each week. Practice records are due each Monday. All late practice records will be given half credit. Late records may be turned in up to the end of the grading period (every four weeks). If a student is unable to practice please write a note on the practice record Written Assignments and Tests (15%) Playing Tests (30%) Class Participation (40%). Students are expected to adhere to all class policies outlined below. Concerts. All students are required to attend the required concerts. If a student is unable to attend a concert for any reason an alternate assignment will be given. Please send a note as soon as possible if there is a conflict with a concert date. Citizenship Grading Policy If you choose not to follow the behavior policy outlined below you will be asked to sign the clipboard. The number of times your name is on the clipboard will help determine the participation portion of your academic grade (40%). It will also determine your citizenship grade. Students that sign the clipboard multiple times may be placed on a behavior contract. Music Boosters We have a very active and supportive booster club. Each year the Arcade Music Boosters raises money for instrument repairs, music, class supplies, field trips, fees, and other expenditures associated with the program. During our initial membership drive we will ask for your financial support. Please don t send any money until you receive more information. Additionally, during our first meeting of the year (September 6 at 7:00 pm in the music room) we will decide on fundraisers and we will take sign-ups for coordinator positions. Please join us!

If you purchase an instrument PLEASE DON T buy one from a warehouse store (Costco, WalMart, Sam s Club, Target etc.). These instruments are inexpensive but seldom work well and you will likely become frustrated and quit! Most music shops won t even repair them anymore!! Check my website for a link to the above stores and their rental price lists. School Instruments: There are some school instruments available for use but our supply is limited and old. If you use a school instrument you may not get your first choice instrument. Contracts will be sent home as soon as possible. Instrument Supplies: Reed players: At least three working reeds at all times!! (buy 10 to begin if your budget allows) Beginners should start with size 2 reeds Brass Players: Valve oil and/or slide cream Percussion Sticks or Mallets ALL beginning drummers must rent a bell kit!!! Jazz Workshop The Arcade Jazz Ensemble meets during the AR and lunch on Mondays and Wednesdays. All interested students should attend the informational meeting during AR on Monday, August 21. Only intermediate and advanced band students will be allowed to join. The jazz ensemble has many performances outside the school day throughout the year and parents/guardians need to agree to transport students to and from these engagements. Only students enrolled in the band or choir will be allowed into jazz band unless there are schedule conflicts. Please see Mrs. Pool. Arcade Chaperones: 1. Fingerprints must be run by SJUSD. 2. Fill out a Volunteer Form for Arcade 3. If driving, you'll need to fill out paperwork and provide a copy of your insurance and driver s license. 4. Email: michele.ebner@sanjuan.edu for more information. Chaperones Needed Arcade has many field trips throughout the year. If you think there s even a remote chance that you might serve as a chaperone there are some things you should take care of right away. The forms and specific information are available on the school website under Students and Families, Volunteering. Please take care of this ASAP and THANK YOU!
