We are so glad you are here today to celebrate the season with us. This is one of our favorite times of the year: there are fun carols to sing, freshly cut trees to decorate, cookies to bake, and gifts to wrap. We hope that the music here today will fill you with the joy of the season, and that this joy stays with you throughout the New Year. We send our warmest wishes to you and your family for a very happy holiday season! The Cathedral Choral Society is a 140-voice chorus that rehearses and performs at. We perform works by well-loved composers such as Bach, Brahms, and Beethoven, as well as music by composers of today. We present three concerts throughout the year in addition to our Christmas programs, as well as two Cathedral Sings! sing-alongs open to singers of all levels. Carillon Prelude heard from outside the Cathedral Up high in the Cathedral s central tower, 53 bronze bells ring loudly! The carillon bells are played on keyboard and pedals in the tower, and are best heard from outside. Brass Prelude Washington Symphonic Brass Phil Snedecor, director Procession Once in Royal David s City Henry John Gauntlett As the concert begins, the Cathedral Choral Society and the Hylton High School Troubadours walk down the Cathedral s center aisle. They are led by an Advent wreath with four candles, one for each of the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. Today two candles are lit. This traditional hymn comes from 19th century England. Ring-a the News Robert Evans Make a joyful noise! Two choruses, brass quintet, and organ join together on this festive carol. THE BRASS Phil Snedecor, leader of the Washington Symphonic Brass who play with us today, talks about playing the trumpet. You will learn about the instrument s history, too. I Wonder as I Wander arr. John Jacob Niles The brass players are all around you! See if you can tell where they are, as they have wandered around the Cathedral. This melody comes from America s Appalachian region. HYLTON HIGH SCHOOL TROUBADOURS We will hear two pieces by our special guests, who are high school singers from Woodbridge, Virginia in Prince William County. David Moore The Troubadours sing this Christmas piece in Latin. Gaudete, Christus est natus means Be Joyful and Celebrate! Christ is born!
