The fire was creeping in, drawing the smoke inside my mother s room, hidden within my mother s locked closet, my thoughts began to race. I'm afraid. I can't breathe. Will I die? " Please! Anyone! Help me!," I cried scratching against the closet door, " Mama! Don't leave me here! I'm scared! but no one heard me. Breaking up into tears I began to wish for someone to save me. I could feel the room getting hotter as sweat began to roll down my cheeks. Waves of heat were in the room, brushing up against the closet door.
I tried to touch the doors but it burned my fingertips. In the back of my mind, I thought this was the end. All I could do was to cover my head and pray to myself, hoping in the next life I wouldn't have to die in fear. I heard a loud crash outside the closet doors. I lifted my head up peeking through the small cracks between the doors, wondering if it was mama who was going to come to save me. My heart began racing fast, I was happy that no one had forgotten me, but then I took a second look...it wasn't mama who was standing there. A tall dark figure was coming close to where I hid. Covering my mouth with my hands, I moved away from the door, tears were flowing out of me. If I had a choice I'd rather be swallowed up by flames then to be stabbed in the chest by a demon. The door flew open, there stood a figure towering over me. I screamed in fear as I latched myself against the back of the closet. The figure took me by the waist with its massive hands. I fought back, pushing away, trying to escape from the tight grip but eventually, my eyelids grew heavy and everything around me began to run black. In my slumber of darkness there was no hope of living again, is this what it means to truly die after you live?, Where was the promised land? Where is mama? I miss mama and papa. Where is EVERYONE!?, looking around, I could see darkness, a slight smell of
sweetness filed the empty space. Slowly the darkness began to disappear and turned into light shining through my dreams. I cracked open my eyes. The bright light blinded me, I covered my face. Rising up I took a look at my surroundings. A soft blanket was covering me and food that was placed next to me. The smell was wonderful, my mouth was already watering. I haven't had anything to eat yet...but when was the last time I did eat?. I ate the food that was given to me, the flavor was so intense it was the best dish I ever had. After finishing my plate I was thirsty, a cup of water was beside me filled to the brim it had a sweet aroma. I picked up the cup drinking the sweetwater. I could drink this all day but at last it was gone. Full and replenished I looked out the window. Was all this real? Am I really home?. Taking a look outside there were valleys. I could see tons of peach trees a river near the mountains. Birds flying overhead and the beautiful sun shimmering upon the water. Then I heard the door open, I quickly turned away from the window hiding under the blankets in fear. Closing my eyes tightly, hoping whoever it was would go away, I took a peek from under the covers. There stood a little girl smiling at me holding a basket of fruit in her hands. Chapter 2: The Land of the Drinker Gripping the blanket feeling ashamed for eating the food that wasn't mine.
"Good Morning Xiu", she smiled, gracefully placing the fruit basket beside my bed. How does she know who I am?, I'm a stranger in this place. I watched carefully keeping my mouth shut, not to showing my expressions. "Come on she stood over my bed, Why hide under the blankets?, I brought you some fruit that your uncle made me pick, it wasn t an easy job." Turning over I kept the blanket on me but she ripped it right off with a swift motion. I paused for a moment as I sat upright, looking at her funny, "I...have an Uncle?" I was confused. Ma'ma never told me Papa had a brother? she said that Papa was the only child in his family. Slowly my memory came back to me, I remember the hot burning flames in the rooms and ma'am shoving me inside a small tight closet, with a strange figure lurking before me. I turned to face the girl quickly grabbing her arms, " Look!, this place is not safe!, I never had an uncle! my father never had a brother!" Pushing her to the side I got up quickly. She pushed me back down on the bed, shoving the bowl of fruit on my lap. " Look here! You need to relax", she sat next to me. " Your mother really never told you the truth? your father does have a brother and he lives here in this beautiful place".
Before I could speak she shoves an orange in my mouth to keep me quiet, " Your uncle is the High God that rules over these woods, he is a wine god who drinks", she quickly ate the orange, there was a moment of silence between us. I could not believe my uncle was a drinker!?, and on top of that, he is one of the High Gods too!?!?, which does not make any sense at all. How could someone become a High God pass the mortal realm test and rule a land while drinking? "So...he is a player?" I looked at her with a shocked expression. She laughed choking on her food, slapping my back. "BWAHAHA!, he is not a player, take a look outside", she pointed at the trees, " Do you see those peaches on the trees?", I looked to where she was pointing at. With a calm reply I responded, "Yes, what about them?" "Wellll..." she gets up proudly before me, " What you see out there turns into a sweet drink that is given out to the High Gods, here your uncle makes the best peach drinks ever!" she smiles brightly. I looked down, she didn't even answer my question how he is my uncle. With a heavy sigh, I clamped my hands together "So...what is your name, I don't know what to call you by", glancing at her. She looked at me, putting her hands on her side, "My name is Bai Qian, I'm from the Fox Clan, I am also Nine thousand years old so please respect your elders ", she let out
a small snicker and spoke, "And your name is?" leaning close to me with her hands behind her back. I tried to speak but my words stumbled " X-iu...Z-hen, I am also 9 thousand years old I coughed, clearing my throat. Bai got flustered turning away from embarrassment letting out a loud cough to break the awkward silents. She patted herself down, then she turned around eyeing me. " Ohh, your parents named you well, Xiu for charming and Zhen for being valuable, genuine and innocent" pausing in her thought she squinted at me. "You are quite valuable, the last heir to the throne...must be scary, everything is on your shoulders." Bai backed away, bring her hands to her chin "Just don't know if you are innocent" she gave an evil grin. "Don't look at me like that!?" I bolted up from the bed making her stumble backward. " I did not set a fire to my home!, I'd never hurt my family if that's what you are trying to say!" I blurted out my frustration at her, was she trying to pick a fight with me right now. "Whoa easy, they're easy, I didn't mean to make it sound that way. I was just joking" putting her arms around me she held me close rubbing my shoulder, "At least I got you to get up" Bai grabbed my hand tugging me out the door. "Wait where are we going!" I tried to let go of her grip as I was stumbling out the door
Bai shouted out ahead of me "We are going to meet your uncle, I know you have a few questions you have to ask him, so that's where we are going. For the first time in my life, things were going to be unfolded. Chapter 3: Truth to be told We jumped over rocks and dashing through the cold stream of water up along the hill. There I saw a tall figure with long black hair that glistened in the sun, he was sitting upon a rock underneath a peach tree holding a small jug of what Bai called Peach water. Bai ran up tugging at his long pink robe, I stood at a distance looking at him. He stood up while Bai was clinging to him. He turned to face me, smiling setting down his drink on the stone rock behind him. Xiu Zhen, come here, he let out his arms going down to his knees. I was hesitant walking up to him, I glanced over to Bai who was behind him, she was making a face to come over. I clenched my hands together approaching him, keeping my head low. I was worried of what he might do. I stopped in my tracks before him, he held me uplifting me up from the ground in his embrace.
Xiu!, Don't worry there is nothing to worried about now. his face lit up and took me down by river, there laid a table with some fruit. He set me down beside Bai. He picked up his robe sitting across from us, peeling away the peach skin giving us the juicy yellow fruit, placing them in plates for the both of us. Then he began talking in a soft voice. I brought you here under my protection, to keep you safe. Your father sent out a letter to me a couple of weeks ago. he placed the burnt letter on the table in front of me, I took it in my hands and unfolded the letter. He continued on with his speech, Your father and the Celestial tribe tried their best to make peace with the Ghost tribe but it failed, he couldn't protect you from what was bound to happen to the kingdom. he took a deep breath, sighing One day you will go back and reclaim the fallen tribe. before he could continue I broke out into tears. HOW! I exclaimed jumping out from my seat How can I bring back what is lost?, I m just a child!, I don t know how to run a kingdom, look at me!?, I am nothing! He waited until I cooled down looking relaxed he watched me sit as I sat back down.
Xiu, you will not bare this by yourself, I am here to teach you and you will work under me from now on till the day you pass your immortal test, he reached in his pocket and gave me a ruby stone. This belonged to your father, he used this stone to bring him courage, your father was my closest kin to me. You are what's left of my family and I will do whatever I can to take good care of you, I promised your father. I broke out into tears when he brought up my family. I had no one else who was blood-related to me but only this man who I still don t know yet. Bai looked at me and patting my back giving me comfort, then out of nowhere she picked up the sliced peaches and threw it at him. Well if you're going to take care of her then at least tell her your name!? Cause what is she going to call you by? Huh? Old man?? she crossed her arms glaring at him. The peach smeared his face, he wiped it off using his sleeves. You know Bai...that was very rude to throw something at your senior. he made a flat face at bai crossing his arms. Bai sat up straight lifting up her chin, I m not rude, I giving you a wake-up call because you know nothing of how to treat a girl!, Bai pointed her fingers at him She is crying and you're just sitting over there doing nothing! Bai pouted What kind of man
are you?, No wonder why you didn t get a wife and only your brother did! that shows he had more potential then you! I stopped crying and looked at her...i couldn't believe her!?, she has more guts than a boy!, I looked over and saw his whole face turned white. I couldn't help but cover my mouth from bursting out into laughter. I m beginning to like this girl's attitude more. He coughed out loud clearing his throat, and made sharp eye contact with Bai, Maybe I should go tell your older brother that you drank all his peach water I gave him yesterday..hm?, I bet you won't be able to face your punishment if he found out his voice got deep, giving Bai the death stare. Bai covered her mouth and as for me, I giggled, these two where almost like brother and sister the way they acted. Hehe, you two are very funny when something bad happens I wiped my tears away and ate more peaches smiling at them. I felt a happy light growing in my heart, the warmth of a family's touch. Bai looked at him with approval, she sat back down flipping her hair. He gave an uneasy look at Bia and then back at me. Xiu, forgive me for not introducing myself in the beginning, my name is Zhang Zhi Xiao. You can call me Uncle Zhang for short he smiled. Smiling back at him I held my peach close to my heart. Even if I wasn t home with my actual family, I will have to come to terms with my new one. There are still some things that I don t know about yet, but I will learn everything I can
from this day onwards. Many new experiences are yet to come, I will be able to make new memories with my new family and friends. Memories that will last for miles.
