Hello friends! I'm so ready for spring, but another freeze watch appeared today! Yet, as I'm writing this, the "early adopters" are in bloom or ready to pop. So I've adopted a spring attitude and am ready to pair that with some good arts events in the weeks ahead. First Friday at the Movies (May 4) is screening "Victoria and Abdul," an intriguing story of unintended consequences as a young clerk from India finds himself in the service of the Queen. The unlikely friendship changes the Queen and ultimately threatens the inner court. Come see why Judy Dench earned Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations for her royal performance. Show time is 7pm. The Second Friday RAAC Talk (May 11) features Al Regnery and Stephen Brooks, who will wrestle with a significant issue facing us today. Al and Stephen have built quite a following to their pointcounterpoint classes at RappU. Al, the conservative, and Stephen, the liberal, will dive into an issue from their distinct perspectives and then entertain questions from the audience. Start time is 8pm at the public library, and all are welcome. RAAC Community Theatre is performing "A Thousand Clowns" May 11-13. With an all-star cast, the play's a classic, quintessential American comedy about an irreverent nonconformist, who avoids the demands of social responsibility but finds that love for his nephew leads to change, compromise, and self awareness. Go online soon to reserve your tickets and enjoy theater at its best! For those of you who like to plan ahead, RAAC's first Film-Talkback event is scheduled for Saturday, June 23 (details in our upcoming June newsletter). We'll be screening "The Post," followed by special guests who will discuss key issues raised by the movie and engage with movie goers in an extended conversation about the film. Our annual fundraising drive is officially over. A huge thanks to the many supporting members who undergird RAAC! You enable us to produce, encourage, and enable artists and arts programs around the county with the goal of enlivening our community. If you haven't joined or renewed this year, please click HERE and become a supporting member of the RAAC family. Finally, Give Local Piedmont (click HERE) takes place on May 1. This annual event is a great opportunity to donate to your favorite local nonprofits, including RAAC. Matthew Black, President, RAAC Vol 6, #4 May 2018 1 of 6

As their friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes, joyfully reclaiming her humanity. -From the Internet Movie Database Click to visit RAAC's First Friday Movie webpage. 2 of 6

RAAC Community Theatre "A Thousand Clowns" Friday, May 11, 8pm Saturday, May 12, 8pm Sunday, May 13, 3pm We hope you'll join us for the RAAC Theatre production of Herb Garner's "A Thousand Clowns." When "A Thousand Clowns" opened on Broadway in 1962, it was nominated for best play; the movie, which came out in 1965 was nominated for best film. After the play opened, "The New York Daily News" wrote that it "would be a standout comedy in any season. Filled with laughter and warmth and sweetness and inspired daffiness. One of the quintessential New York comedies." It's still true, and just the thing for what ails us: an evening of whole-hearted laughter with a touch of poignancy. The standout cast includes a group of well-loved RAAC actors and showcases the direction of Petrina Huston in her first directorial role for RAAC. Bob Hurley as Patty Hardee as Murray Burns Dr. Sandra Markowitz Nicholas Platskin as Nick Burns Mike Mahoney as Arnold Burns Scott McMurtray as Leo "Chuckles the Chipmunk" Herman Larry Finkel as Albert Amundson RAAC Community Theatre, 301 Gay Street, Washington, VA. Artists of Rappahannock 14th Annual Studio & Gallery Tour Contact deadlines: Thursday, May 3 for new participating artists Friday, June 1 for returning artists If you are a Rappahannock artist interested in joining RAAC's annual Art Tour for the first time, please email Heather Wicke, Chair, Art Tour Planning Committee, by Thursday, May 3 at at hwicke2@gmail.com or call 540-675-3368.
