BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE William A. Powell (d. 1854), a captain in the Alabama State Militia, and his family settled in Caddo Parish, La., (later became part of Red River Parish) in 1843 on a land grant he received and there established Mount Flat Plantation. The Powells also owned Slate Place Plantation in Red River Parish. Powell and his wife Eliza (d. 1871) had six children: Puella, Jane E., William, Amelia Virginia (d. 1855), Louisiana, and Mary B. Upon Powell s death, his wife took over management of Mount Flat Plantation. Mary B. Powell married Hubbard S. Bosley, a planter from Coushatta Chute, Red River Parish, La., in 1856. They had six children: Eugenia C. (b. 1857, died in infancy), Thomas Randolph S. (b. 1858), Alexandra (1861-1864), Marion Powell (b. 1863), Urnesteen Louisiana (b.1865), and Milton Hubbard (b. 1868). Bosley owned Telegram Plantation and his sons, Marion and Milton, owned Bosley and Brother, Merchants of Coushatta, La. Hubbard S. Bosley was appointed administrator of Eliza Powell s estate. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE Collection consists of plantation records, personal and business papers, and personal correspondence and letters of the William A. Powell family of Mount Flat Plantation in Red River Parish, La., and similar papers and store ledgers of Hubbard S. Bosley, Powell s son-inlaw, and members of the Bosley family of Telegram Plantation, Red River Parish, La. Plantation records consist primarily of William Powell s land grant dated 1843, statements and receipts for purchase of Powell s slaves from 1843-1849, tax receipts, and bills for merchandise. Personal and business papers consist of William Powell s appointment as captain in the Alabama State Militia, a composition from Powell s son while he was attending Union Academy in Texas, Eliza Powell s will from 1860, the Bosley family s statements of accounts and bills for merchandise from New Orleans merchants, contracts with tenant farmers and laborers, notice of the succession sale and lease of Mount Flat and Slate Place plantations, an inventory of Eliza Powell s personal property, account statements from Bosley and Brother, merchants in Coushatta, La., and bank statements, insurance policies, and contracts with tenant farmers. Other business-related items include a portage book for the steamboat Cordelia Ann, cashbooks, ledger books, a register of bills, daybooks, and notebooks. Personal correspondence consists of letters among members of the Powell and Bosley families concerning family news, travel, social life, Civil War letters from C.B. Johnson, (Louisiana Powell s husband) and news of his death in 1863, and a series of letters from Marion and Milton Bosley about their experiences at LSU in the mid-1880s. This collection is arranged chronologically. 4
