UBC ENSEMBLE AUDITIONS FOR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, SYMPHONIC WIND ENSEMBLE, CONCERT WINDS, AND CHAMBER ENSEMBLES Woodwinds, Brass, & Strings 1. Major and natural/harmonic/melodic minor scales and arpeggios in all keys, two octaves or more (when possible), performed from memory, demonstrating your full range and a variety of requested articulations. 2. Required excerpts* (see attached excerpts, including works from this season s repertoire). 3. Sightreading. Excerpts for piccolo, English horn, Eb clarinet, bass clarinet, and soprano sax are included in the main packets for each appropriate instrument. Students who wish to audition for opportunities on these instruments should prepare all of the required excerpts on their primary instruments, as well as the secondary excerpts on auxiliary instruments. Woodwind and brass students who are non-music majors or secondary concentrators and wish to audition for Concert Winds or Chamber Music only may substitute two contrasting selections (one lyrical and one technical) for the required excerpts, no more than a total of four minutes in duration. Non-music majors and secondary concentrators who participated in Concert Winds during the 2016-17 season DO NOT need to re-audition for Concert Winds. Just leave a completed audition form (attached) in the box outside of Dr. Taylor s office (room 319) by September 6, and come to the first rehearsal on Monday, September 11, at 6:00 p.m. Percussion 1. Major and natural/harmonic/melodic minor scales and arpeggios in all keys, two octaves, in the pattern of your choice, performed from memory on xylophone or marimba. 2. Required excerpts (as attached), plus one short solo work or etude of your choice for a keyboard instrument (bells, xylophone, marimba, or vibraphone). Returning students may not play selections performed in recitals or juries during the previous academic year. 3. Sightreading. Harp 1. Required excerpts* (see attached excerpts, including works from this season s repertoire). 2. A contrasting solo work of your choice. TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL AUDITIONS: Prepare diligently! Your audition is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your musical strengths to your private teacher and ensemble leaders, as well as the basis for ensemble placements and part assignments for the academic year. Read the audition requirements carefully and prepare all of the required selections. Whenever possible, listen to multiple recordings of the required excerpts so that you understand the context of each passage. Be professional and make a good first impression. Dress appropriately. Introduce yourself and your excerpts, but limit talking to a minimum. Warm-up and arrive early with your instrument tuned and ready to go. Bring your assembled instrument, sheet music, and completed audition questionnaire to the audition, and leave extra belongings in your locker or with a friend. For the sightreading requirement, scan the music silently before you begin. Choose an appropriate tempo so that you can perform at your best without stopping. Play as musically as possible, paying close attention to all expressive markings (and adding interpretive decisions of your own!). Take some risks, communicate your interpretive intent, and remember that auditions are an important educational experience. Everybody in the room wants you to do well. Break a leg!

Please list any secondary instruments on which you are able to perform: Year (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, 4 th, MM1, MM2, DMA1, DMA2, DMA3, DIP1, DIP2, or other ): Ensembles I am interested in participating in the following large ensembles this year (keep in mind that all music majors will be assigned to large ensembles on the basis of auditions and personnel needs): Symphony Orchestra (TTh 4:00-7:00 pm) Symphonic Wind Ensemble (MW 3:00-6:00 pm) Concert Winds (MW 6:00-8:00 pm) In most cases, wind and percussion students auditioning at the highest level will rotate between Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble; however, personnel needs in certain studios may require some overlap in assignments. Top auditionees will be assigned to both Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble in term 2, for the shared concert February 9 and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble Tour to the SF Bay Area March 17-24, 2018. Please indicate if you have any concerns about participation in the tour: Potential Rehearsal Conflicts Indicate all potential schedule conflicts during the times listed below.
