Through the Bible in KIDS CHURCH Lesson Title: To Go, or Not to Go (Abram s Call) Text: Genesis 12 Date: 10-27-02 v4 Lesson Summary: God told Abram to GO! Abram had no idea where or why but he obeyed. This lesson is not just about a man from long ago, but about God s call to us everyday to GO when he says GO and to trust Him even when we can see the reasons, the outcome or the situation before we get there. Try to get the children to sense the adventure there is when we follow God into the unknown. Main Point: Following God Leads to Adventure! ELEMENT DETAILS MATERIALS Singing We re ON TIME! He s Changing Me I Keep Falling in Love I Have Decided to Follow Jesus Trust the Lord Seek Ye First (Offering Song) STOP, and Let Me Tell You Intro Walkie talkies Or Cell phones Molly Game Skit Bible Story Choose a student give him a walkie talkie and send on a mission somewhere in the church, guide him all the way to a destination where there is a prize awaiting him/her. What if s/he had not gone? Had not listened? Had not trusted? They would have missed out on the prize. Today s story is about a man who God told to GO and he had to go not knowing where he was going, or what the prize would be. All packed to GO on a trip. Shows Karl letter about Florida Vacation package Molly won, but it is from Duey, Cheetem, and How she was tricked, not really a winner, we have to be careful whose GO s we listen to! ON YOUR MARK, GET SET. Put a collection of different games on the stage. Choose contestants, and explain game and then say on your mark. Get set OK, games over. And start to explain the next game putting that one away. After 4 or 5 different games all ending this way, ask Aren t these games fun? (be ready for NO!) What the commotion is about? What? Just because you never said GO they are upset? Aren t they fun just getting ready? Oh, I see, you have to actually GO to enjoy the game. I see. End by letting the contestants choose the one they want to play and actually play it by saying GO ON YOUR MARK! A collection of runners come out ready for the KC 1000 Dash for $1,000,000 they are all ready to go. Dressed as runners and jumping up and down, warming up, excited. One guy, however, has his leg in a split (boards against leg, wrapped in ace bandage and then toilet paper will work) they kinda sneer at him, but don t ever do it. On GO! they each start to do things OTHER THAN running toward the marked off finish line! (reading a book, playing a handhelp video game, talking on a cell phone, doing make up, sleeping!, etc.) The guy in the leg split slowly, but steadily makes it to the finish line and wins!! The Point: It isn t how smart, talented, popular, athletic, or good looking you are all the matters is if you actually GO when God says to GO! Puppets Docking Bay 94 The Crew of the USS Procrastinator is ready to go. All systems are GO, the computers and scanners are all ready to GO, but the Captain will not take off. Finally, leader interrupts puppet show, Why are you taking off to boldly go where no puppet has ever gone before? His answer: Because it is safer to just stay where you are. Gus Object Lesson Toybox Tale Story Lesson Verse Puppets Assignment Talk about Abram seeing God s Green Light and going. Gus says he has invented a NEW traffic signal that people will really like. Talks about all the disadvantages of red and yellow and then says that he has invented the THREE GREEN system, all three lights are green! Next Tells Christian horse joke (see below) Traffic Signal: RED: Danger SIN YELLOW: Caution PRAY GREEN: Go OBEY The Surprise Party A bunch of characters are ready to throw a surprise birthday party, but the birthday person refuses to GO through a door, they miss out. See: www.toyboxtales.com I Will Never Liviu The story of Liviu Oprea. (Story of a missionary we support.) Tell a story of a missionary your kids know who obeyed the call to GO and follow God. The Christian life is a life of obedience it is a life of doing whatever God says to do, no matter what, and trusting that He has a good reason, and that any plan of your own is inferior to His! ISA 6:8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!" Puppet Song Suggestion - "I Will Follow Him" Available at: www.onewaystreet.com Take home the CONTRACT WITH GOD pray about it, and if you are willing, sign it, and then post on the wall in your room. It is simply a way to remind yourself that the Christian life is one of surrender to God s Will, not matter what that might mean. PUPPET SHOW: Docking Bay 94 Summary: The Crew of the USS Procrastinator are in dock and ready to go where no puppet has ever gone before! Except, they are content simply to stay in the docking bay. The leader even interrupts the puppet show to try and convince them to actually GO somewhere, but their need for security costs them adventure and reward. Crew 1: Well, captain, the USS Procrastinator is ready to go. Captain: Excellent. Crew 2: Awaiting your orders, sir. Captain: Well, done crew. Crew 3: Cool, (to himself) Boldly going where no puppet has gone before! Captain: Uh, yeah. Whatever. Crew 4: Maybe they will make a TV show of us! Captain: Cut the chatter, crew. Crew 4: Sorry, Captain. Captain: Number One what do the scanners show? Crew 1: Nothing, Captain. All clear. Captain: Excellent. Number Two, what is the computer s status? Crew 2: Computer ready to go, Captain, all systems are GO Captain: Uh, OK. Um, Number Three, What do we have on the view screen? Crew 3: Well, that would be nothing, Captain. We are still in the docking bay. Captain: I am quite aware of our location, Number Three. (turns) Number four, Engine Status? Crew 4: Off, sir, but ready to go. Should I turn them on? Captain: Negative, leave them off. Number One, anything on the scanners? Crew 1: Uh, no. Same as before. Nothing. Captain: Excellent. And the computers, Number Two? Crew 2: All systems still GO, Captain, shall I initiate launch sequence? Captain: Negative, Number Two, much to dangerous. We shall hold our present bearing. Crew 3: But, our present bearing is still in the docking bay?! Captain: Whew, that s a relief. Crew 4: RELIEF! But we haven t GONE anywhere, how can not going anywhere be a relief? Captain: My crew s safty is my first priority, Number 4 and I ve kept you safe so far, haven t I? Crew 4: Uh, well, yeah, but aren t we supposed to Go where no puppet has gone before? Captain: Oh, NO! That would be much to dangerous. We d better stay right here. Much safer here. Crew 2: Hey, that makes no sense. Crew 3: What s going on here. Crew 1: Yeah, who wrote this script anyway. Leader: (walks over) I did, but it wasn t supposed to go this way. You re all supposed to go opn an adventure in space! Captain: I am the Captain here! Leader: But I wrote the puppet show. Captain: Does not matter, I am in charge, and I say we stay right here in docking bay 94. Leader: But you will miss out the great adventure I planned for you Captain: Adventure is for cowards. Safety! Security! Same-O, Same-O! That is what I want. Crew 1: Forget it, I quit. Crew 2: Me too, this rots. Crew 3: Guess I gotta boldly go where all the other puppets have gone before, bye. Crew 4: So much for the TV show. We couldn t even be a commercial! Captain: I shall have you arrested! Mutiny! You will be Court Marshaled! Deserters! (exits) Leader: Uh, sorry about that, I really planned a much more exciting adventure, what went wrong? (discuss) The End
