See back pages. COBBLER S CORNER -Cliff Shoemaker The latest and greatest version of Don t Fence Me In is now uploaded to Groupanizer. I would suggest that everyone print off the new spots and replace the ones that are in your folder. I will plan to bring some copies with holes punched on Wednesday night. A special thanks to Tom Meier for putting the whole song into Noteworthy, so that you won t have to skip around and try to figure out where to go next. I apologize for the quality of the key change inserts and the new tag on the learning tracks. It was the best I could do with little time and a scratchy voice. For those of you who were not at the Convention in Las Vegas, one of the highlights for me was the induction of some great barbershoppers into the BHS Hall of Fame. In addition to Mo Rector and the Boston Common, I was especially pleased to see the 139 th Street Quartet entering this elite group. Jubil-Aires member and frequent arranger, Larry Wright was the first lead in that quartet, and their first year competing on the international stage (1976), they finished 10th. The next year they earned a silver medal. (For Larry, the international stage was nothing new. As the A fellowship of men devoted to the art of a cappella barbershop singing, committed to excellence in musical performance and good will in the community. Visit the Fairfax Jubil-Aires s Web page at http://www.fairfaxjubilaires.org

2 lead of the Sundowners from 1965-71, he had already earned two silver medals.) The scanned pages from the Las Vegas program can be viewed on the back pages. I was familiar with Larry and the quartet appearing on Cheers, but the article referenced an appearance on Night Court. Searching YouTube, I could not find it, but recently Ashley Wright posted it on Facebook. It is a fun bit to watch. http://youtu.be/a2z6lfyctbu For those of you who have read the script for next year s show, you may have noticed that Shameless will be doing a Roy Rogers Medley. This Larry Wright arrangement concludes with Happy Trails and was the inspiration for our show closer. I have posted the full mix of the Roy Rogers Medley on Groupanizer with the Happy Trails music. It is a wonderful collection of songs from Roy, Dale, and the Sons of the Pioneers. And the good news is that the song is contestable. We have been blessed with a lot of wonderful arrangements from Larry. One of Shameless favorites is Grow Old With You, which has become the go to song for Valentine s Day and any occasion involving a couple in a romantic setting. We previewed it at Peter (my son) and Leslie s wedding in Peoria, Illinois for their first dance. And Retro really enjoys singing the song he arranged for Heidi (my daughter) and Jeff s wedding that all the Jubil-Aires sang: Just The Way You Look Tonight. Retro is working on some new Larry Wright arrangements that we can t wait to master so that we can unveil them in public. As Pat always says, So many great songs, and so little time to sing them. I think I speak for all of us in thanking Larry for such wonderful arrangements, and we look forward seeing the Wright family in April for our annual spring show. SPEAKING OF WHICH: The tickets can now be ordered online, and we are considering offering an early bird special i.e. $15 per ticket for those purchased before January 1 st. If the board approves it, then you (all the members) will need to start selling tickets (and ads) sooner rather than later. With a great new venue this year and some really fun songs, we need to make sure we sell out both shows!!! See Bill McDonald s flyer attached to the newsletter. Spread the word. 4 BULL RUN TROUBADOURS (Prince William Chapter of the BARBERSHOP HARMONY SOCIETY, Inc.) www.brtva.org August 19, 2014 Gentlemen and Guests, It s that time of year again, when we can get our chapters together and share our music and fraternity. 2014 Dog Days of August is off and running and we would like to extend a formal invitation to your Chapter to join us for an evening of fun and harmony. We have extended invitations to our neighboring Barbershop Chapters in the Southern Division and we would be delighted if you could join us. Here are the details: Date: Tuesday, August 26, 2014 Time: 7:00 pm to 10:00pm Location: Sacred Heart Catholic Church (same as last year) 12975 Purcell Road Manassas, VA 20112 The format for this year s Dog Days of August music program will be the same as last year. We will still end the formal chapter performances by 10:00pm. Immediately following the formal singing, we are encouraging all barbershoppers who can stay around later, to socialize and sing for as long as you wish. We realize that many of you have daytime jobs for which you need to be rested and may not be able to stay. But if you can stay a while, that would add more sociability to our event, which many of us enjoy as well. Our goal is to have more singing and more socializing this year. For those unfamiliar with our format, each chapter will be allowed a certain time slot in which to perform all their songs including chorus and quartets. To fully utilize our limited time frame, we do not have an MC between chapter performances. Instead, to fill that void while the choruses are ascending and descending risers, we are asking that the director of the chapter that just finished their performance to lead the audience in a pole cat President: Randy Moller Immediate Past President: Fred Geldon Executive VP: Still Looking Music and Performance VP: Cliff Shoemaker Membership VP: Aaron Watts Marketing and Public Relations VP: Harold Weinberger Corresponding Secretary: Sam McFarland Recording Secretary: Ray LaTurno Treasurer: Kevin Deasy Gig Master Art Medici Members-at-Large Doug Jones, Alex Laufer, and Paul Grano

5 song or other activity and then introduce the next chapter when they are ready to sing. Please note that we will have a scheduler whose responsibility will be to keep each chapter s director on schedule so that we do not go beyond 10:00pm. This year we may have as many as six chapters performing. Depending on the number of confirmed RSVP s, I expect that each Chapter will have about 30 minutes to showcase their chorus and quartets in whatever format they wish. As usual, Harmony Heritage (Mount Vernon) will sing first and the Harmonizers will finish up the program. As soon as we know how many chapters will be joining us this year, I will send out another email showing the order of appearance and the riser s times. We expect that seating will be limited, so we encourage you and your guests to arrive early. The Troubadours will be there about 5:30pm to set up the hall. We are asking the Alexander Harmonizers to once again bring their risers and sound system. Thank you, Harmonizers, in advance. The Troubadours will be available to help the Harmonizers unload their equipment at 6:00pm and load it up at 10:00pm. Looking forward to seeing all of you again. Any questions or comments, please feel free to call me. IMPORTANT: Please RSVP by e-mail (abl.tax.service@verizon.net) or call me at 703-330-8787 (work) or Dan Sobrio at 703-361-2690.
