PHIL 3410: METAPHYSICS Dr. Corinne Bloch-Mullins MW 2:00-3:15 Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy that studies the fundamental nature of reality. Metaphysics questions include: What is causation? Is the mind identical to the brain? Do humans have free will? We will explore these and other problems in Metaphysics.

Fall 2017 TuTh @ 11:00 am Dr. Anthony Peressini Philosophy 3660 Marx and Marxism Details: What is the secret of labor power that makes its purchasers rich? What can we learn about political and economic modernity from dancing tables? Why did Marx call nature man s body without organs? What is the relationship between chattel slavery and your student loans? How do we imagine value unbound from capitalist economy? In the course, we will investigate all this and more through an in-depth study of the philosophical and economic writings of Karl Marx and subsequent Marxist thinkers, including Black Radical, feminist, and queer thinkers. anthony.peressini@marquette.edu (414) 288-5683

Philosophy 4953/5953 Consciousness & Qualia Fall 2017 TuTh @ 2:00 pm Dr. Anthony Peressini Details: How does the brain give rise to the inner qualitative experience that characterizes our existence? Why should the neural impulses of the visual cortex have associated with them experiences (qualia) like seeing red or feeling a dull ache? Is conscious experience always and only qualitative? In this course we will investigate all this and more as we work understand consciousness and the problem of subjective qualitative experience. No science or technical background is required! To read more about the central question of this course, check out this link to an intriguing article in the online version of The Guardian or find the link on my Marquette website: http://academic.mu.edu/peressini/ anthony.peressini@marquette.edu (414) 288-5683
