The Music Department at ASFA Through classroom instruction, disciplined practice and innumerable performance opportunities, students learn to communicate, inspire and entertain in ensembles or solo. The Music Department offers training and experience to prepare students for advancement to collegelevel conservatories and subsequent professional careers. Graduates are currently active in virtually every professional musical endeavor, from solo recital, symphony, opera, jazz and pop to music education, music therapy and the commercial music industry. The outstanding record of success by ASFA music majors is reflective of a basic philosophy: to develop technical proficiency, artistic ability and intellectual curiosity to the fullest, so that each individual may successfully pursue a specialized career option in the highly competitive field of music. Students in the music program at ASFA have the opportunity to learn through performance in various capacities. All music majors are required to participate in the ASFA Choir that performs throughout the year. Each student performs in student recitals at least once each semester. In addition, instrumentalists participate in orchestra, jazz ensemble, and smaller chamber ensembles. Department performances presented through-out the year include standard repertoire from the Renaissance to the 20th Century. Curriculum The music program is comprehensive in its study of Applied and Practical Music. Applied Music consists of course work that relates to actual music performance such as one weekly private lesson, orchestra, choir, chamber choir, jazz ensemble, vocal and piano repertoire/literature and chamber music. Practical Music courses are more classroom-based and include music theory (basic through advanced), music history, aural awareness, sight-singing, and class piano. Students earn two credit units per semester, one for Applied Music and one for Practical Music. Alabama School of Fine Arts Mission Statement The mission of the Alabama School of Fine Arts, a diverse community of explorers, is to nurture impassioned students by guiding and inspiring them to discover and fulfill their individual creative abilities in an atmosphere distinguished by the fusion of fact and feeling, risk and reward, art and science, school and society. Accommodation Statement ASFA was created by the State to provide a more challenging education for talented and gifted students. Consistent with its mission only those students will be admitted to ASFA and allowed to remain who are able to meet the demands of a rigorous curriculum. Applicants with existing Individualized Education Plans (IEP) are obliged to inform ASFA administration during the application period. If a disabling condition is substantiated before or after enrollment, a committee appointed by the Executive Director will determine if the school can accommodate and if the student may remain at ASFA. Equal Opportunity Information It is the policy of the Alabama School of Fine Arts not to discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion, color, creed, national origin or any other proscribed category, in its educational programs, activities, or employment policies as required by local, state, and federal policies and laws. Inquiries or complaints regarding compliance with applicable laws or this policy may be directed to Dr. Michael Meeks, Executive Director, Alabama School of Fine Arts, 1800 Rev Abraham Woods, Jr Blvd., Birmingham, AL 35203, or by calling him at (205) 252-9241.
