ABSTRACT Plot is the sequence of events in a story or play. The plot is a planned, logical series of events having a beginning, middle, and end. The short story usually has one plot so it can be read in one sitting. There are five essential parts of plot; Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution. This paper is entitled The Description of Plot in J.M Barrie s Novel Peterpan. In this novel narrated infidelity is about an A family who met a fairy named Peter and their lives changed when they saw the fairy and in that world they turned against a Hook captain and managed to fight him and when Peter and Tinker met. In this research the writer usesqualitative description method to describe the plot which is presented in the novel.

ABSTRAK Plot merupakan urutan kejadian atau peristiwa dalam sebuah cerita atau sandiwara. Plot biasanya sudah direncanakan, bagian yang logis dalam suatu kejadian yang memiliki awal, pertengahan, dan akhir. Cerita pendek biasanya memiliki satu plot yang bisa dibaca dalam satu kedudukan. Ada 5 bagian yang penting dalam plot; Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, dan Resolution. Kertas karya ini berjudul The Description of Plot in J.M Barrie s Novel Peterpan. Dalam novel ini dikisahkan tentang seorang keluarga yang bertemu dengan peri bernama Peter dan hidup mereka berubah ketika melihat peri tersebut dan di dalam dunia khyalan tersebut mereka melawan seorang kapten Hook dan berhasil melawannya dan ktika itu Peter dan Tinker bertemu. Dalam penelitian ini penulis menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk menggambarkan plot yang sudah tersaji dalam novel tersebut.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of the study Wellek and warren (1989: 1-4) explain that literature in frequently used to refer to imaginative works. It has been generally considered that literature comes up from the imaginative minds of people who had when to create stories literature can be classified based on whether it is poetry or prose; it can be further distinguished according to major forms. One of the major forms of literature is novel. Taylor (1981:1) says that literature, like other arts, is essentially an imaginative act, that is, an act of the writer s imagination in selecting, ordering, and interpreting life experience. e by using dialogue; short story is a short form limited in members of page. The major forms of literature are novel, poem, drama and short story. They have much in common. Poem is focused on lyrics written by stanza; drama related to performance on stage by using dialogue; short story is a short form limited in members of page.in this paper a novel is used as the material of the discussion, which the novel itself belongs to the literary work. Revee (1985) says that novel is a picture of real life and manners, and of the time in which it is written. Based from the quotation above, a novel seems as the portrayal of human life and behaviour in reality. In other words, the novel tends to be the representative of the activity of human real life, which concerns too many things and aspects such as: ambition, feeling, emotion, desire, obstacles in life, problem, etc. Fananie (2001:93) says that plot is construction which is made to read on of a sequence of events that are logically and chronologically related, and caused or experienced by actors. It means an entire series of events contained in the story, caused or experienced by actors. The novel tells Peter Pan takes Wendy and her siblings to neverland. There, peter is plagued hook, who is himself plagued by crocodile who bit off his hand. In the end, Wendy, Peter, and the lost Boys escape Hook s clutches. One night, Peter Pan flies into Wendy Darling s room and convinces her and her siblings to come to neverland with him. Jealous, the fairy Tinker

bell tries to sabotage them, but is found out and temporarily banished for her efforts. The writer have never read a novel about Peter pan want to fly but Peter unwilling to grow up. so definite It makes the writer interest to describe of plot in this novel.finally, the research of this paper focuses on the plot used in the novel written by J.M Barrie entitle Peter Pan. This is the background as well as the reason why this paper focus on the description of plot found in this paper. 1.2 Problem of the study How is the plot portrayed in the novel? 1.3 objectives of study The objective of this paper is to findout the structure the plot in the novelpeter Pan and describe to the readers about the story or plot of this novel. 1.4 Scope of study The description of this paper is limited to plot in the novel. Therefore, the scope of this paper is Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action is restricted to the plot found in this novel. 1.5 Significance of the study Theoretically, the significance of this description is to increase the literary understanding in terms of literary works and plot found in novel Peter Pan. Practically, it has significance for the readers to understand what plot is in a novel. 1.6 Method of Research The writer uses qualitative description method in doing in this paper. The primary of data sources is Peter Pan novel and the secondary of data sources are books and internet. Method of the description in this paper is a library research. The writer collects some data to support the description, finding the related data to the research then narrowing the collecting data of the library research to the related element which are about plot. The data in the words, texts and

quotations from. The writer reads and notes that data then selects to be interpreted. Having understood the story of the novel, the writer can analyze the plot of the novel and make the conclusion.

CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE Fiction writing is any kind of writing that is not factual. Fictional writing most often takes the form of a story meant to convey an author s point of view or simply to entertain. The result of this may be a short story, novel, novella, screenplay, or drama, which are all types (though not the only types) of fictional writing styles. 2.1 Novel Novel is a length story which tells about life experience of human being. It can be made base on imagination. The imagination is not really life experience, it is impossible in real life. Reve (1985) says that novel is a picture of real life and manners, and of the time in which it is written. Based from the quotation above, a novel seems as the portrayal of human life and behaviour in reality. On the other words, the novel tends to be the representative of the activity of human real life, which concerns too many things and aspects such as: ambition, feeling, emotion, desire, obstacles in life, problem, etc. Watson (1979:3) says that novel is the name of a literary kind, and there is a story to tell about how, over the centuries, its substance has widened and its conventions changed. So it means novel is literary work, narrate about the life in centuries ago. Of course, novel is a way to send message in social, such as in novel find character that plays role hero and felon. Hero in novel will be success but not felon will be loser. From this message the reader can get inspiration that hero is good but felon is bad. Reading a novel can help reader to think the conversation of character, it makes the imagination improved became more criticism. Because the reader thinks what thing is good to support. In the beginning of novel is not interesting in the ending, because it takes the attention the reader to read the whole story. Watson (1979:3-4) says that novel is a way of learning about how things were or are-cognitive instrument; and those who distrust stories as evidence should consider how often in conversation we use them to make points or answer questions.

Novel is usually written in the past tense because the author tells story that happens in the past, the author imagine the story firstly then interpret it in writing so the imagination first then writing in the past tense. In addition novel is written in past tense because it is a heritage of senior novelist, like saying of Watson (1979:6-9) says that why most novels are mainly composed in the past tense? And why is it that when readers or critics recount the plot of a novel, or any part of one, they commonly translate it into the present? The simplest answer to these questions is that we conventionally associate past tense with telling a story, and present tense with analysis. In ordinary conversation, it is worth nothing, anecdotes are usually in the past tense, even when they are offered as fictitious. 2.2 Plot Plot is one of the elements of fiction and organized the sequence of events and actions that make up the story. A novelist uses plot to arrange the sequence of events. In most stories, these events arise out of conflict experienced by the main character. The conflict may come from something external, like a dragon or an overbearing mother, or it may stem from an internal issue, such as jealousy, loss of identity, or overconfidence. As the character makes choices and tries to resolve the problem, the story's action is shaped and plot is generated. In some stories, the author structures the entire plot chronologically, with the first event followed by the second, third, and so on, like beads on a string. However, many other stories are told with flashback techniques in which plot events from earlier times interrupt the story's "current" events. Plot must be effective and it includes a sequence of incidents that bear a significant causal relationship to each other. Causality is an important feature of realistic fictional plot because something happens because of a result something else. In other words, it's what mostly happened in the story or novel or what the story's general theme is based on, such as the mood, characters, setting, and conflicts occurring in a story. An intricate, complicated plot is known as an imbroglio, but even the simplest statements of plot can have multiple inferences, such as with songs the ballad tradition.

Talking about plot means we talk about the actions or events that are usually resolved at the end of a story. The fictional plot maybe a struggle between opposing forces, love and many others and it is usually resolved by the end if the story. There are five essential parts of plot: 2.2.1 Exposition The beginning of the story where the characters and the setting is revealed. The exposition is the introduction to the characters and setting of the story. The exposition hooks the reader, providing enough interest and information to the intended audience to encourage the reader to continue reading. Every story must have a beginning, the start, or exposition, is where the characters and setting are established. During this part of novel, the conflict or main problem is also introduced. 2.2.2 Rising Action This is where the events in the story become complicated and the conflict in the story is revealed (events between the introduction and climax). The rising action introduces the conflict or problem in the story. This part of the plot tells us what it is that the main character or protagonist is facing. During the rising action, the main character struggles with this conflict or problem. The conflict may be: a) Character vs. character: the problem the protagonist faces is one involving another character b) Character vs. society: the protagonist faces a problem involving something in the society in which they live (example: racism) c) Character vs. self: the character has some internal struggle inside themselves d) Character vs. nature: the protagonist struggles with some natural force (tornado, harsh climate, etc.) After the characters and main problem have been established, the main problem or conflict is dealt with by some kind of action. In this part of the story, the main character is in crisis. This is

the place for tension and excitement. The complication can arise through a character s conflict with society, nature, fate, or a number of themes. In this part of the story the main character is aware a conflict has arisen and takes some kind or step to battle this crisis. 2.2.3 Climax The climax is the high point of the story, where a culmination of events creates the peak of the conflict. The climax usually features the most conflict and struggle, and usually reveals any secrets or missing points in the story. Alternatively, an anti-climax may occur, in which an expectedly difficult event is revealed to be incredibly easy or of paltry importance. Critics may also label the falling action as an anti-climax, or anti-climactic. The climax isn't always the most important scene in a story. In many stories, it is the last sentence, with no successive falling action or resolution. 2.2.4 Falling Action The falling action is the series of events which take place after the climax; it is where the protagonist must react to the changes that occur during the climax of the story. The events and complications begin to resolve them. The reader knows what has happened next and if the conflict was resolved or not (events between climax and denouement). Following the climax, the story begins to slowly wind down. Falling action, one of the two final story elements, shows the result of the actions or decisions the character has made. This eventually leads to the final part of the novel, this crisis resolution. 2.2.5 Resolution The part of the plot that concludes the falling action by revealing or suggesting the outcome of the conflict. The resolution, also often called denoument, which is French for to

untie or unraveling, is the conclusion of the story. Here, the conflicts are resolved, all lose ends are tied up, and the story concludes with either a happy or sad ending. In a story, the events maybe rise and fall repeatedly and actually a plot develops a series of complications or intensification of the conflict that leads to a moment of great tension. Sometimes the author will use some techniques in writing the plot to make the story more interesting or to add a twist or turn. Foreshadowing is where the author may hint at what might happen in the future. Flashback is where the author might tell us something that has happened in the past to help explain the present. Irony is when the author has something happen in the story that is the opposite of what the reader expects. Plot can be divided into two types, they are closed and open. This division is based on the way how an author presents the resolution of his story, they are: 1) Closed plot: in this type of the plot the end of the story is clear because the author presents a definite resolution of conflict. Most narrative works use closed plot, because the end of the story is clear, readers do not have to think a lot about it. 2) Open plot: this type of plot has little or no resolution at all. The author, however, creates some clues in the story that will lead his readers to conclude the resolution of the story. Crane in his work, The Concept of Plot states that any novel or drama represents a composite of three elements: action, character, and thought. Plot is, thus, the particular synthesis of the three elements. Razali Kasim (2005:20) divides plot into three kinds, a) Plot of Action: in this kind of plot the interest lies in what happens next, while the character and thought are portrayed minimally. We rarely, if ever, find any serious or intellectual issues. b) Plot of Character: this kind of plot deals with the process of change in the moral character of the protagonist. c) Plot of Thought: this kind of plot deals with the process of change in the thought of the protagonist and in his feeling In a well plotted story, things precede or follow each other not simply because time ticks away, but more importantly because effects follow causes. In a good

story nothing is relevant or accidental; everything is related and causative. The controlling impulse in a connected pattern of causes and effects is conflict which refers generally to people or circumstances that a character (often the protagonist) must face and try to overcome (often the antagonist). Conflict brings out the extremes of human energy, causing characters to engage in the decisions, actions, responses, and interactions that make up most stories. Conflict is the major elements of plot because opposing forces arouse curiosity, cause doubt, create tension, and produce interest.

CHAPTER 3 THE ANALYSIS OF THE PLOT 3.1 Exposition The exposition of this novel is beginning the part of the story. Mrs darling have a children. Them children name s is Wendy, John, Michael. and There is one child who wants to grow up her names is Tinker Bell. And all children soon know that them will grow up, and Wendy knows all that them will grow up. when she was two years old,she was playing in a garden and then she plucked another flower and ran with it to her mother. and when Mrs Darling want s put her hand to her heart and her cried. And the passed between them on the subject but henceforth wendy want s knew why she must be grow up Oh,why can t you remain like this for ever and she was playing in a garden and she plucked another flower (PeterPan, 1911:7 ) When peter will tell wendy plan for the road to neverland but with bringing birds, bring a map And they will consult the angle of the wind that blows. They can not see all the instructions. And Peter told wendy if he saw the instructions coming to his own head. Second to the right, and straight on till morning for a road to Neverland with bringing birds, bringing map and the angle of the wind that blows (Peterpan, 1911:55) Mrs. Darling was alone at home, someone answered the bell and the door was open and her dog nana came in the house and go out in the afternoon. And she grow and sprang at the boy in the window. And again Mrs. darling screamed at the same time somebody came in house and that man had trouble to kill Mrs. Darling. And then Mrs darling ran to street dan look for his

body. And she come back the nursery and found it Nana with something in her mouth and the proved to be the boy s shadow, when he leapt into window, Nana quickly closes the window of the house and very late catches the him. And his shadow to get out went the window and snapped it off. And Nana it had no doubt for the best thing with his shadow. He is sure to come back for it; let us it where get it easily without disturbing the children and she come back the nursery and found it Nana with something in her mouth (Peterpan, 1911:22 ) For a moment, Mr and Mrs. Darling left the house with the night lights in the beds three children for a burn clearly. They were awfully nice night lights, but one of the wishing that can not be granted is that it can not help them to kept awake to see Peter. And wendy lights blinked. But on the other side the light in the room can be drawers in the nursery looking for Peter s shadow. And when the fairy came to the Peter, and Peter dropped it. He had carried with Tinker Bell in the part away. Tinker Bell, when you came to the rest in skeleton leaf, cut low and square and could be seen to the best advantage ( Peterpan, 1911:36 ) Peter feeling about his way back to Neverland must be again woke into life, but woke is better used by Peter. In his absence things usually quiet on the Island. And then the fairies take hour in the morning to their young. The redskin very suitable for six day and nights because feed heavily. When Pirates came and meet the lost boys, And each of their hands merely bite including the thumb If you put your ear to the ground now, your hear the whole island seething with life. In his absence thing usually quiet on the island ( Peterpan, 1911: 69 )

When the foolish tootles want standing like a enquerror over the wendy body s And then that too the other boys sprang the armed Falling from a trees. And then him cried in the proudly and say it that shot the Wendy You re are too late, and I have a shot the Wendy. Peter will be so pleased with me and then he cried in the proudly and say that shot ( Peterpan, 1911: 86 ) One of first peter did next day was to measure Wendy, John and Michael for hollow trees. Peter remembered Hook because he had sneered at the boys for thinking them needed of a tree a piece but this was ignorance, for unless of tree fitted dan your was diffucult want to go up and down, and no two of the boys were quite the same size. But, you must fit, and peter measure for your tree for carefully as for a suit of the clothes. The only difference being that the clothes are made to fit you, While you have to be made to fit you, while you have to be made to fit the tree ( Peterpan, 1911:100 ) If you close your eyes, you will be able to see the shaped pool with The pale color that hangs in the dark, you will be able to squeeze your eyes tighter to see the pond that has formed, and have a very vivid color. On another squeeze in the way they are the fire alive. But, before they go on fire you can see the lagoon, and you can see the mermaids singing and surf. In the summer days on the lagoon, the children can be swimming or floating, playing the mermaid games in the water, etc. If there could be two moments you might see the surf and hear the mermaids singing and playing the mermaid games on this lagoon ( Peterpan, 1911:109 ) One of the important on the lagoon is of the brush with the pirates was it made the redskin into their friends. Peter had save a tiger lily from dreadful fate and nothing for she and her braves would not do for him. In the night, they sat above, keeping watch over the home and

waiting the big attack by the pirates. Another, they hung about, smooking the pipe of peace and looking if they wanted tit bits to eat. The great white father prostrating lying down and he liked this tremendously not really good for him ( Peterpan, 1911:133 ) Wendy tells her to listen and wendy too will settling down her story with michael at her feet and seven boy s in the bed that once a gentleman and the curly said that him had been a lady Listen, then there was once gentleman. If i had rather he had been a lady and i wish He had been a white rat, and the mother quiet ( Peterpan, 1911:143 ) In one of the green lights over kidd s creek, Besides that of the near the mouth of the pirate river, marked where the brig, the Jolly Roger, lay, and low in the water. She was a cannibal of the seas, and scarce needed that watchful eye and she floated immune in the horror. A Rakish looking in speedy looking craft foul the hull, every beam in her detestable, like ground strewn with mangled feathers and scarce cannibal of the seas that watchful eye and floated immune in the horror ( Peterpan, 1911:176 ) 3.2 Rising Action For a week or two after Wendy came it was doubtful whether they would be able to keep her, as she was another mouth to feed Mr. Darling was frightfully proud of her, but he was honourable, and he sat on the edge of Mrs Darling s bed, holding her hand and calculating expenses, while she looked at him imploringly. She wanted to risk it, come what might, but that was not his way; was with a pencil and a piece of paper, and if she confused him with suggestions he had to beginning again and he would beg of her

What she said in her lovely tinkle Wendy could not of course understand, and i believe some of it was bad words, but it sounded kind, and she flew back and forward, plainly meaning Follow me, and all will be well ( Peterpan. 1911:68 ) In they went; i don t know how there was room for them, but you can squeeze very tight in the Neverland. And that was the first of the many joyous evenings they had with Wendy. By and by she tucked them up in the great bed in the home under the trees, but she herself slept that night in the little house, and Peter kept watch outside with drawn sword, for the pirates could be heard carousing far away and the wolves were on the prowl. The little house looked so cosy and safe in darkness, with a bright light showing through its blinds, and the chimney smoking beautifully, and Peter standing on guard. After a time he fell a sleep, and some unsteady fairies had to climb over him on their way home from an orgy.

A tremour ran through him, like a shudder passing over the sea; but on the sea one shudder follows another till there are hundreds of them, and Peter felt just the one. Next moment he was standing erect on the rock again, with that smile on his face and a drum beating within him. When Margaret grows up she will have a daughter, who is to be Peter s mother in turn; and thus it will go on, so long as children are gay and innocent and heartless. CHAPTER 4 CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION 4.1 Conclusion The plot used in the novel of J.M Barrie, Peterpanis progressive plot. Progressive plot means that the plot content is chronologically narrated. It simply contains the beginning, middle, and an ending. The exposition of the story is Mrs Darling loves to tell her three children, Wendy, John and Michael bedtime stories before they go to sleep. Without her knowledge, Peter Pan listens to the stories and returns to Neverland where he tells the stories to the lost boys boys taken away from their parents.one night while Peter Pan is leaving the children s nursery, Nana, the dog who is the children s nanny, catches Peter Pan s shadow in its mouth. Mrs Darling examines the shadow and decides to roll it up and place in a drawer. At nights the children often dream of the magical island, Neverland, so they know about it. The Rising action of the story is After one incident, Mr Darling banishes Nana to stay outside in the kennel because he wants to let everyone know that he is master of his own home, but that decision comes to haunt him for a while. One night, Peter Pan returns for his shadow while the three children are sleeping in the nursery, and unfortunately Nana is locked outside the home. Peter Pan is with the fairy Tinkerbell. They find Peter s shadow, but he cannot stick it back on and starts to cry. The conflict happens The crying awakes Wendy, and of course she wants to know why he is crying. She sews back on Peter s shadow. There is a lot of exchange going on between Wendy and Peter, and Tinkerbell is quite jealous. Peter uses chicanery to get Wendy to leave with him. Which child wouldn t want to see mermaids, learn to fly and all the things that fairy tales are made of. Meanwhile, Nana is very suspicious and starts to bark. She ultimately breaks free and goes to the house where Mr and Mrs Darling are at a party. They sense danger and go with Nana, but alas they are too late and the kids are gone.

Mr and Mrs Darling are devastated and cannot be consoled. The children are flying to Neverland which is far away. It s very tiring, and they are sleepy, but how can you sleep while flying. When they fall asleep, they start to fall, and Peter often waits until the absolute last moment to save them. To him it s quite funny to watch. They are hungry, and he teaches them to steal food out of the beaks of birds. Quite often it is a futile attempt. Because of her jealousy, Tinkerbell wants to get rid of Wendy. When the three Darling children arrive at Neverland, Wendy s role is changed to that of mother. Very soon Michael and John start to forget about their parents, but Wendy constantly reminds them by telling stories and sets examinations papers on it. Wendy is confident that their parents will welcome them back with open arms, and she takes comfort in knowing that.as the story unfolds, we learn about Execution Dock, Captain Henry Hook and his crew. There is a rivalry between Peter Pan and Captain Hook who lost his hand because of Peter Pan. Peter cut off Captain Hook s right arm and fed it to a crocodile who now thirsts for the villain s blood. Captain Cook is a bully, and like most bullies, he is a coward. The falling action in the story is Peter Pan is childlike and wants to remain that way forever he doesn t ever want to grow up. Peter is also a show-off who makes the children and the lost boys dependent of him. It s quite funny when they have pretend meals. They are hungry, however at meal times, they do not always have actual food, so they pretend that they are eating a meal. Captain hook captures everyone except Peter Pan and intends to kill them. You see team work in action when they help Peter to finally vanquish his archenemy Captain Hook. The Darling children say they want to go home, and the lost boys return with them. Peter Pan doesn t want to live with the Darlings or any other family because that means that he has to grow up, which he doesn t want to do.back home, Mr and Mrs Darling are saddened by the disappearance of their children. Mr Darling pays penance by living in Nana s kennel because he didn t listen to the dog s pleas. When the children return, the parents make room for the extra boys because they are so glad to see their children. The following year Peter Pan returns and wants to take Wendy once

again, but Mrs Darling is having none of it. They come to an agreement that for one week each spring, Wendy can return to Neverland and do some spring cleaning for Peter. Resolution of the plot in this novel is Time is very different for Peter, and he returns infrequently, until he shows up when Wendy is grown and married. By that time Peter Pan is no longer important to her. Wendy tells the Neverland story to her daughter Jane. One spring when Peter Pan returns, because his concept of time is so different, he doesn t realize that Wendy is a grown woman and he asks for Michael and John. Wendy tells Peter Pan that the child sleeping is a new one, and she tells him that she is a grown woman. Peter Pan is distraught because he didn t want Wendy to grow up. Peter Pan teaches Jane to fly, and the same deal is made that each spring, Jane will go to Neverland for a week to spring clean. This was the first time I read Peter Pan and what I liked most about the story is the magic of believing that you can do the impossible. Peter Pan convinced Michael, John and Wendy that they could fly. They believed they could fly and tried to fly until they mastered it. A big part was taking action. 4.2 Suggestions Plot is important aspect inside literary work such as novel, short story, etc. so it is important to look at the plot first when analyzing literary work. Analyzing the plot can help the reader to understand the entire story of literary work.
