Languages English Biographical Note Dorothy Hinshaw Patent is the author of over one hundred thirty non-fiction books about science and nature for children and young adults. She was born in Rochester, Minnesota, on April 30, 1940. Her father, H. Corwin Hinshaw, was a physician at the Mayo Clinic. The Hinshaws moved to the San Francisco Bay area in California when Patent was nine years old and she grew up in Marin County. She received her bachelor s degree from Stanford University in 1962 and her master s and doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. While in graduate school, Dorothy Hinshaw met and married fellow zoology student, Greg Patent. After graduate school Patent worked as a scientist with two years of post-doctoral work at Sinai Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, and Stazzione Zoologica, in Naples, Italy. She spent several years teaching night school at the University of Montana in Missoula, Montana, and was full-time on the faculty for six months. In the 1970s, she began publishing children s books about science and nature. She got her first publishing contract in 1972 and has been writing non-fiction children s books ever since. In the early http://archiveswest.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv97131 1

1980s, she began collaborating on children s books with photographer, William Muñoz. They have since published over sixty books together. Patent has also written gardening books for adults with collaborator Diane Biederback, including The Book of Garden Secrets (1983), which was revised and reissued in 1997. Patent has published numerous articles in such magazines as Organic Gardening, Arizoo, Camas, Falcon, Spider, Wild Outdoor World, among many others. Patent s photographs have appeared in National Gardening, The Missoulian, and in some of her children s books. She has coauthored cooking articles and the cookbook A is For Apple with her husband, Greg Patent, an award-winning culinary writer. Patent has received numerous honors and awards. Many of her books have been chosen as Outstanding Trade Books for Children by the National Science Teachers Association. Her books have also been chosen for the Library of Congress s Children s Book of the Year, the Bank Street College of Education Best Children s Books of the Year, and numerous other awards. Patent and her husband, Greg, live in Missoula, Montana. They have two grown children, David and Jason Content Description The collection primarily contains materials from close to one hundred of Patent s non-fiction science and nature books for children and young adults. The collection contains materials from all stages of the writing process, including research, correspondence with publishers and expert consultants, drafts, publisher s proofs, galleys, photographs, and other illustrations. While most of the collection contains materials from her published books, there are also materials related to manuscripts that were never completed. Other parts of the collection are devoted to correspondence and clippings. Use of the Collection Restrictions on Use Researchers are responsible for using in accordance with 17 U.S.C. and any other applicable statutes. Copyright for some materials transferred to The University of Montana. Preferred Citation [Name of document or photograph number], Dorothy Hinshaw Patent Papers, Archives and Special Collections, Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library, The University of Montana Missoula. Administrative Information Arrangement The collection is divided into four series: Series I: Book Projects, 15.75 linear feet, 1956-1999 Subseries 1: Published Book Projects, 15.0 linear feet, 1966-1999 Subseries 2: Unpublished Book Projects, 0.75 linear feet, 1956-1988 http://archiveswest.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv97131 2

Series II: Other Projects, 0.25 linear feet, 1977-1990 Series III: Correspondence, 0.75 linear feet, 1972-1991 Series IV: Clippings, 4 folders, 1977-1989 Acquisition Information The collection was donated by Dorothy Hinshaw Patent in four parts in 1994, 1996, and 1999. Processing Note Some materials arrived at the archives organized by subject and this arrangement has been maintained as much as possible. Materials that were not filed with book projects or are not related to book projects have been placed into other series in the collection. Detailed Description of the Collection Series I: Book Projects, 1956-1999 15.75 linear feet This series includes materials from Dorothy Hinshaw Patent s published and unpublished book projects. The materials include original manuscripts, drafts, research, notes, clippings, correspondence, illustrations, photographs, publisher s proofs, galleys, and copies of published books. The manuscript drafts are mostly annotated. It is interesting to note that many of the drafts for Dorothy Hinshaw Patent s early books were composed on the backs of her children s elementary school assignments. This suggests Patent s dual roles as a writer and mother. This series also contains materials from Dorothy Hinshaw Patent s unpublished book projects. In some cases, these book projects only contain research and preliminary writings. The unpublished book projects include: a textbook on animal biology that Patent was coauthoring with her husband that was never finished; a book about rodeos; and a manuscript about pheromones aimed at adults. The quotation marks around folder titles indicate the author s description of the contents. The end of the series contains miscellaneous notes and photographs from unidentified book projects. The series begins with published book projects organized according to full publication titles. The series ends with materials from unpublished book projects. Container(s) Description Dates Subseries 1: Published Book Projects 15 linear feet This subseries contains manuscripts, publisher s galleys, correspondence, and other materials from Patent s published book projects. 1966-1999 Box/Folder http://archiveswest.orbiscascade.org/ark:/80444/xv97131 3
