Word Mastery Fluency Cards Word Mastery Decoding Fluency Practice Cards Copyright 2014 by Donald L. Potter www.wordmastery.org Note from Internet Publisher: Donald L. Potter July 4, 2014 I designed these cards to be used to help students develop fluency (accuracy + speed) in identifying the words in first 25 pages of my edition of Florence Akin s 1913 Word Mastery. I have included some words that are not in Akin s program, but which are decodable with the phonics taught in those pages. I have published a handsome, large print paperback edition of Word Mastery with CreateSpace. Visit my www.wordmastery.org website for ordering information. The first six-steps are coded: 1-1 (1) = Step 1, Card 1 (Cumulative Card 1) 2-3 (11) Step 2, Card 3 (Cumulative Card 11) The first five-steps are the most important because they lay the solid foundation for the rest of the program. They are the most important steps for establishing the Letter Box organization in the brain, upon which all success in learning to read depends. 1

Word Mastery - Word Identification Fluency Cards Steps Phonics Skills Pages Number of Words 1 Short-ă m n r f s 5-9 8 2 Short-ĕ t l g c k b 10-16 31 3 Short-ĭ h d p 17-20 62 4 Short-ŏ j w 21-22 45 5 Short-ŭ z x a v y 23-25 37 183 The Steps can be used to group the cards in a card file box. They should be taught in order, but practiced out of order as the students gain accuracy and speed. This discrimination practices is vital for the development of full automatic (word mastery) necessary for fluent reading. am Word Mastery 1-1 (1) Copyright 2014 by Donald L. Potter July 4, 2014 These cards are decoding fluency practice cards. They are NOT for whole-word memorization. Go slow at first making sure the children can sound out each word accurately with absolutely NO guessing. Word identification speed will gradually increase until full automaticity is reached. The students should also learn to spell the words by letter names and in writing. The goal of Word Mastery is the complete mastery of the words in the program and the skills that mastery gives to unlock all the other words in the English language. Last edited 7/9/2014. 61
