Volume 5 No. 1 January - February 2016 Faculty of Music University of Toronto State of the MaHRC and Welcome Reception for Dr. Thaut On Tuesday January 26, as part of the Music and Health Colloquium Series, Founding Director of MaHRC, Lee Bartel presented the State of MaHRC an overview of the associates, collaborators, and projects that constitute MaHRC. Dr. Allan Gordon of Mt Sinai Hospital and Dr. Morris Freedman of Baycrest gave overviews of music medicine research in their institutions. Prof. Kevin Komisaruk, Thenille Brown Janzen, and Aline Moussard described the projects they are pursuing. It was also a welcome event for the new Director, Dr. Michael Thaut, with a reception from 4:45 6:00 and the Official Welcome from Vice President Research and Innovation, Dr. Vivek Goel, and Music Dean, Don McLean, from 6:00 7:00. Dr. Thaut then presented a review of his research work. The full program for this event that features a list of people associated with MaHRC and projects underway is online at: http://uoftmusicmahrc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/prog-mahrc-january-26-1.pdf Prof. Frank Russo to be Honoured by International Commission for Acoustics Professor Frank Russo, Psychology Department at Ryerson University, Director of the SMART Lab (Science of Music, Auditory Research and Technology), and current president of the Canadian Acoustical Society has been selected to receive the 2016 ICA Early Career Award. The honour will be officially awarded at the 22nd International Congress on Acoustics in Buenos Aires in September 2016. The Congress is officially sponsored by the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), and the National Council of Acoustical Consultants (NCAC). It is also sponsored by several Universities and Professional Institutions of Latin America.
Research2Reality Features Bartel Video R2R is a research promotion program initiated and guided by Prof. Molly Shoichet, University Professor and Canada Research Chair, Tissue Engineering; and Senior Advisor to President of UofT on Science & Engineering Engagement. One of the sponsors of the R2R series is Discovery Channel, that runs these videos as commercial spots. Prof. Bartel was selected as an R2R Research Rockstar with about 50 other researchers from universities across Canada. The video entitled, Healing through Sound can be seen at: http://research2reality.com/videocategories/science-society/ Director Thaut Invited to Present CPIN Distinguished Lecture Michael Thaut has been invited to present a talk in the prestigious Distinguished Lecture Series of the Collaborative Program in Neuroscience (CPIN) at the University of Toronto. The series features leading neuroscientists from around the world and is a required course for CPIN students. Dr. Thaut has also been appointed as a member of CPIN as well as having been cross-appointed to the Institute for Rehabilitation Science. The lecture takes place February 23, 1:10 pm in Walter Hall, Faculty of Music. Bartel to Join Board of Artists Health Alliance Lee Bartel, former and founding director of MaHRC has been nominated to join the Board of the Artists Health Alliance (AHA). The AHA provides leadership in health advocacy, promotion and education for artists of all disciplines. Through outreach, research and support of the integrative healthcare facility at The Al & Malka Green Artists Health Centre at Toronto Western Hospital, it is a catalyst for advancing the health and wellbeing of the artistic community. Bartel s special interest in research will be applied to animate the potential for both research and translation to clinical practice.
