Introduction s a second grade classroom teacher, I alays enoyed singing ith my class then one day things changed In a faculty meeting e ere hed oectives y grade level for the entire year They ere listed in sixeek sections, the progress as to e reported on each child s report card at the end of the sixeeks No frills education So, eing feisty, I set up an appointment ith the principal I had a plan Principal: You cannot ustify singing in the classroom ecause the children have music once a eek ith a trained music teacher Me: What?!?! Why??? Principal: You have to follo the curricula The oectives for reading, math, social studies, science are to e the focus of every lesson Me: Ok What if I find or create songs that teach those oectives? an e sing more often? Principal: Let me see hat you can develop So I created a document ith all of the core oectives laeled numered I searched for songs to teach these, hen I could not find one, I rote one Each month I gave the principal an update on my progress invited him into the classroom to oserve the lesson Mission accomplished My song riting ourney egan Music art activities led y classroom teachers in elementary education are sometimes discouraged ecause of the emphasis on content in reading, math, social studies, science Yet e, in early childhood education, realize the importance of the fine arts as essential in aiding initial learning retention When I as told I had to align the singing art activities ith content learning oectives in my second grade classroom, I did! I set up a second grade singalong ith the four second grade classes in our school meeting in one room One classroom teacher on keyoard one on guitar led the singing ll songs in this ook ere created for teaching reinforcing content in social studies, science, math, especially reading Use your ukuleles ith these songs! hord charts have een provided for your use Several of the songs in this ook have een arranged for Orff xylophones or marimas The marimas ere used on the audio D recording for the Soprano lto Xylophone Parts the chordal Bass Xylophone Parts These marimas ere made using the design of Jon Madin as descried in his ook, Make Your On Marimas The instruments ere made as school proects ith the help of children in kindergarten through fifth grade More information is availale at http://ppunet/madin_myom The udio D recording of all of the songs in this ook is availale separately at http://ppunet/bppbgss
