BURLINGTON PUBLIC LIBRARY NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2013 Newsletter Changes In order to continue to showcase the richest information about your library with a reduced budget, this newsletter will be published quarterly for your enjoyment. Up-to-the-minute information about library services can be found on the library website, Facebook and Twitter as well as at the library. Calendars of the library s monthly events will be located at all service desks. If you would like to receive your newsletter online, in addition to the hard copy you receive in the mail or as a cost saving alternative, please contact the library at helpdesk@burlington.lib.ia.us. NEW SERVICE The Burlington Public Library staff will laminate any item not wider than 16 inches and not more than 1/32 inch thick for a small fee. Customers must fill out a laminating form and sign waiver of responsibility. A fee of $1.00 per foot will be charged with a minimum fee of $1.00. Items for laminating may be dropped off at the Customer Service Desk with a completed form. New Website Unveiled The library has launched a new website complete with a fresh look and feel, clear navigation, improved searching, and plenty of important content describing the services and collections we provide. The redesign takes into account your feedback while capturing advances in web design to create a robust user-centered experience. This project is the culmination of a huge collective effort, involving staff, library users and Civic Plus (this company also designed the Des Moines County website). Improvements include: a responsive design that provides an optimal viewing experience across a wide array of devices that meets usability standards interactive tools to provide more information on library resources and events and more Thank you to the Library Foundation for providing the opportunity to build an improved web presence for the library and its service community. The Burlington Public Library is a 2013 recipient of the Paint Iowa Beautiful grant. With this grant, we repainted the Storytime House fence, which has seen much love from little hands over the last seven years. We will also be able to paint the Storytime Room, the Teen Space as well as the Small Study Rooms. We are confident that you will find that a little bit of paint will make a difference. We give our utmost thanks to Paint Iowa Beautiful, Diamond Vogel, Keep Iowa Beautiful, and our volunteer painters for this opportunity to freshen up the library spaces for our users.
YEAR IN REVIEW LIFE-LONG LEARNING ANNUAL REPORT JULY 1, 2012 JUNE 30, 2013 Your library is committed to providing opportunities for people of all ages to develop new interests and skills. FY13 brought 23,599 participants into the library for 730 classes and events. Along with programs and collections, the library supports lifelong learning by providing staff to answer questions. The library staff answered an average of 10 reference and instructional questions and 13 directional questions each hour. EARLY LITERACY The Burlington Public Library and its excellent staff have been a part of my life since we moved to Burlington when I was 5 years old. I am now bringing my own children to the library for weekly visits to check out books, music and movies. Our library is a TREMENDOUS resource! Serving the youth of our community by developing young readers and encouraging learning and exploration is one of the library s top priorities. This year, the youth services staff held 578 events for youth from birth to age 18 with 21,261 people in attendance. That was up from 523 programs and 19,620 people the previous year. Due to demand, the library added a sixth weekly Storytime as well as continued two weekly Babygarten sessions. Popular events like LEGO Club enticed an average attendance of over 40 children and families coming to checkout wonderful books, as well as to create and imagine together each month. Summer Reading grew by 8% with 1,627 babies, teens and children registered to read towards their summer goals for incentives. COLLECTIONS The library staff keeps the collection current and accessible so that people of all ages can find what they need. This year the staff added a Christian Fiction section by grouping items already in the collection from this popular genre in one place. A circulation study found that the top fiction genres among adult users were mystery, Christian fiction, and westerns. Digital collections were added to the library as well including: Zinio (digital magazines), and OneClickDigital (digital audio books).

The library received grants from the Fine Arts League, Paint Iowa Beautiful, Humanities Iowa, American Library Association, Friends of the Burlington Public Library Foundation, Friends of the Library and Target. PARTNERSHIPS/ OUTREACH The library established and maintained partnerships with the Burlington Community School District, the West Burlington Community School District, Kiwanis, Rotary, Optimist Club, Aldo Leopold Heritage Group, Young Professionals, the Greater Burlington Partnership, Great River Medical Center, Business & Professional Women s Organization, as well as many community groups and businesses that support life-long learning through books, outreach, educational opportunities and their support of the library s Summer Reading Program. I know personally because growing up without any money I would often come to the library so I could read books. It's in the library where I discovered just how amazing and transporting a great story can be. Growing up with domestic abuse in my home I needed a safe place to run away to and for me the library was that safe place, My safe place. The Burlington Public Library creates opportunities for people of all ages to connect with others, to learn about the world around them, and to imagine the futures before them. Mission Statement
CHILDREN S PROGRAMS The second session of Fall Storytime classes will begin the week of November 11th. However, due to the Library s staff day there will be no Wiggle Time on Monday, November 11th. Storytimes will resume on Tuesday, November 12th and continue each week through the week of December 16th. Babygarten classes are on Wednesdays at 6:30pm and Thursdays at 10:00am and welcome babies aged newborns to 23 months. Wiggle Times (ages 2-4) are on Mondays at 6:30pm, Tuesdays at 10:00am and 11:00am and Wednesdays at 10:30am. Storytime classes (ages 4-7) are on Tuesdays at 5:30pm and Wednesdays at 4:00pm. Fall classes were very popular and sessions book quickly, so please inquire about existing openings by contacting the library at 319-753-1647. The library s annual Holiday Sing-a-Long for families and friends will be held on Saturday, December 14 at 10:00am. Join Miss Debbie, Miss Lois, and Jerry for a fun-filled event to get you into the holiday spirit. Warm up with some hot chocolate and treats as we sing together, read together, and finish a holiday craft. Come and spend the afternoon at the library and watch a cool new movie on Wednesdays, November 13 and December 4 at 2pm. Bring a friend, bring your family, bring a snack and enjoy a fun film together at the library. Join us for Monsters University in November and Planes this December. These events are free and open to the public. Read! Build! Play! You are encouraged to visit the library on Saturdays, Nov. 16 and Dec. 21 at 10:00am to check out great books and play with a purpose at Lego Club. TEEN SERVICES Holiday Game Night Tis the day after Christmas and all through the town, the gifts are all opened and the relatives are gone. The teens and the tweens need something to do, so We will have a Video Game Night on Thursday, December 26, from 5-7pm. Anybody 4th grade & up is welcome. Still have holiday company? Bring them along. Feel free to bring snacks too! Teen Anime Night Watch the series Romeo x Juliet Thursday, November 21 and Thursday, December 19 @ 6-8pm over snacks and a craft. OUT & ABOUT Catch us at the Catching Fire Showing at Westland Mall on Thursday, November 21 @ 6-8pm. Enjoy handouts and activities while standing in line with your friends and compete in Hunger Games trivia! 1 Thursday, December 12, 5-7pm HIGHLIGHTS Go ahead, boss us around! Teens who love the library are invited to join the Teen Advisory Board, (T.A.B.). T.A.B. is kind of like student counsel for the library. You have input on programs and books to add to the library. T.A.B. members attend a short meeting each month, usually on the first Thursday. We give you a heads up on new books and upcoming events and usually do something fun to top off the evening. As an added perk, you also get volunteer credit for participating! We now offer a BOGO! Come to TAB, and stay for Book Club. In November, Book Club is celebrating Ender s Game by Orson Scott Card. In December, we will focus on the Unwind series by Neal Shusterman. Whether you have read the book, or not, you will have fun, and you might even win a prize from Becky s lame stash. 2 Tween Movie: The Little Mermaid Wednesday, November 27 @ 1pm Hey, there s no school on this day, so come down and join us Unda da Sea! 3 Teen Video Game Night Friday, November 15 @ 4-7pm. 6th grade & up. ADULT SERVICES SPECIFICALLY FOR SENIORS Iowa's Amazing Public Exposition Palaces From 1887 through the 1930s at least 36 public exposition palaces and buildings were created in 26 communities in mid America. Community boosters saw the palaces as an economic development program that would both promote their towns and products that were key to their economic well being. It started in Sioux City in 1887 where five elaborate, multi-room corn covered structures were erected. Creston built blue grass palaces, Ottumwa created coal palaces and flax palaces flourished in Forrest City. More modest corn covered buildings were erected in Des Moines and Iowans also constructed a corn covered building for the 1915 San Francisco Panama-Pacific International Exposition. Friday, November 1 at 10am A Journey in Transportation: 100 Years of the Iowa Department of Transportation and Iowa Transportation History Highlights The story of transportation in Iowa starts nearly 12,000 years ago as nomadic peoples roamed the area. 2,500 years ago rivers became transport routes for trade. Transportation remained human and animal powered until the 1800s, when the first steam boats plied Iowa's navigable rivers. Now Iowa is home to transportation by highway, water, air, public transit, rail, and trail, much of it built, maintained, or overseen by DOT. This year the DOT celebrates 100 years of connecting the people of Iowa to each other, and the world. The photos, items, and stories highlight the many ways the DOT touches nearly all aspects of Iowa commerce, life, and leisure. Join Iowa DOT Librarian Leighton Christiansen for discussion and trivia. Friday, December 6 at 10am SIT & STITCH It s time to pull out that winter project and join a great group of crafters at Sit and Stitch on Thursdays in November and December. We will meet on November 7th and 21 and December 5 and 19 from 9-11am in Meeting Room A.
FOOTNOTES FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY Proceeds from sales at Footnotes directly benefit Burlington Public Library programs: Children, Teen and Adult Reading Programs, Specifically for Seniors, Babygarten, and more. Volunteers from the Friends of the Library sort donations and sell quality used books at the Footnotes Bookstore located in the library lobby. Watch for seasonal sales. Volunteers also run three major book sales during the year. Footnotes accepts donations of used books, magazines, LP records, DVDs and CDs in good condition, and audio and video tapes. You may deliver donations during Library hours. Please contact the Friends of the Library or call Footnotes to learn more information about library sales and how to become a Friend of the Burlington Public Library.
