Welcome to! We hope you are excited about your upcoming visit to UMKC and your participation in UMKC Jazz Camp, scheduled for June 22 26, 2014. This mailing includes specific information about the camp and about your time here in Kansas City. Please read the contents carefully, and feel free to call with questions or concerns. CHECKING INTO THE PROGRAM Residence check-in will take place on Sunday, June 22nd from 1:00pm to 3:00pm in the lobby of Herman and Dorothy Johnson (5000 Oak Street). Residence staff will have a table set up in the lobby area to check you in and provide you with your room assignment, door badge and room key. If you purchased a parking permit or wireless internet access code, you will receive these, as well. Please note: if you arrive before 1:00pm, we cannot guarantee that your room will be available. If you will be arriving after 3:00pm, please visit the residence hall front desk to check in; it is staffed 24 hours per day. For all participants, program check-in and auditions will take place on Sunday, June 22nd in the lobby of the James C. Performing Arts (4949 Cherry Street). You will be assigned an audition time that will be sent out shortly before the program start date audition times will most likely be between 2:00pm and 4:00pm. Please plan to arrive about 30 minutes before your scheduled audition time this will allow you time to park and check in with our Jazz Camp staff. At program check-in, all participants will receive a final schedule of events and any necessary camp materials. Participants who have ordered a parking permit may pick it up here. AUDITIONS On the first day of camp, each participant will play an audition on his or her instrument. This will be a low-stress, informal audition, and will help determine each participant s placement in ensembles and theory classes (beginner, intermediate, or advanced) during the week. Students should plan to play a piece of their choice that they feel will showcase their abilities. Students may also be asked to play scales, match key signatures to their corresponding scales, and identify the notes in a chord, based on its name (ie: CMAJ, C7, Cdim, etc). Audition times will be sent by email to approximately one week before the start of camp. The audition will take no more than 10 minutes, and students who are commuting to the program are free to leave for the day when their audition is finished. Audition results will be posted on the following morning before the start of classes. Percussionists will need to provide their own drum sets at all rehearsals during the week, but will not need them for auditions. A drum set will be provided during auditions. DRIVING AND PARKING ON CAMPUS For participants driving to campus, a map and driving directions are included here. Please read all signs carefully when parking your vehicle UMKC parking officers are diligent, and they frequently issue tickets to vehicles that are parked illegally or without proper permits displayed. UMKC Jazz Camp is not responsible for parking tickets issued for such violations. If you purchased a parking permit during registration, you will be able to pick up your permit at program check-in. The permit must be hung from your rearview mirror while parking on campus. If your permit is not properly displayed, a parking ticket will likely result. Parking permits will allow participants to park in any UMKC Student lot (see attached map). Please note: there are three types of parking areas on campus: Student, Faculty/Staff, and Metered Parking. These permits are only good for parking areas designated as Student. If you did not purchase a parking permit during registration but would like one to use during the camp, you may purchase a permit directly through the UMKC Parking Office on Monday. The parking office is located in the UMKC Administrative, 5115 Oak Street, Room 221. Those who will not be using a parking permit should plan to park in UMKC metered lots (parking is $1.00 per hour). There is street parking available on campus, but it is very limited. If someone will be dropping you off each day, please note the start and end time of events. Participants who must arrive early are welcome to wait in the Performing Arts lobby, but supervision of commuting participants is not guaranteed until 9:30am. The last event of the day (Practice Time) is optional for students who are not staying oncampus. Please let your program intern know if you will be staying for practice time, or if you will be leaving.

DAILY SCHEDULE Each day, participants will follow a schedule comprising the following events/activities: Theory Class: Faculty will cover a range of topics, such as chord-scale relationships, transcription, and philosophy Master Classes: A faculty presenter will give a master class each day. Each faculty presenter will provide a unique perspective on jazz and jazz performance. Combo Rehearsals: Participants will be placed into combos, based on ability level shown during auditions. They will rehearse in these ensembles each day, and each group will give a performance at the final concert on June 27. Jam Sessions: Participants will have the opportunity to practice their improvisation in an informal atmosphere Practice Time: Participants will be able to use this time to work on their combo music, while receiving individual help from faculty members or interns. This is optional for commuting participants Evening Activities: After dinner each day, all students staying on campus will be participating in an evening activity supervised by the program interns. Activities may include board games, ping pong, pool, movies, or special jazz presentations. A schedule of these activities will be available at program check-in.
