Taking place at Hong Kong City Hall s Concert Hall on 25 th October 2018, this star-studded event emphasises the juxtaposition between Chinese and British cultural heritage. The concept of Music Interflow A Dialogue Between East and West was inspired by the opening concert of Hong Kong Music Series in London last year. Directed by Lo King-man, dubbed Father of Hong Kong Opera, and the Founder and Artistic Director of Musica Viva, Music Interflow has been very well received overseas and he is thrilled to bring this extraordinary showcase to Hong Kong. From the instruments to musical pieces, the concert offers a selection of classical and contemporary music which not only fuses Eastern and Western cultures in harmony, but also reflects the contrasting nature of lyrical styles, resulting in a rich musical experience. Musica Viva values the development of classical music and opera in the city, and focuses on providing performance opportunities and helping young artists grow their professional careers. 1
When organising each concert, Professor Lo will consider the talents of each artist, as well as the unique characteristics of Hong Kong local music. In Music Interflow A Dialogue Between East and West, Professor Lo has specially arranged pieces by three generations of Hong Kong composers: Doming Lam s Three Nocturnal Lyrics of Li Bai, Op. 6, Clarence Mak s Guzheng solo Meditation on Mount Jingting, and young female talent Tsui Mei-ling s Six Miniature Pieces of Yin and Yang. Renowned Chinese and Western musicians were also invited to perform, including professional Guzheng player Xu Lingzi, renowned pianists Nancy Loo and Mary Wu, young talented Erhu player Chan Pik-sum and vocalists Colette Lam and Carol Lin. Through this musical dialogue, Musica Viva invites audiences to journey through Hong Kong s musical development, and takes the opportunity to introduce local talents to the community. Musica Viva s dedication to aesthetics is reflected through its artistic interpretations. Musical pieces in Music Interflow A Dialogue Between East and West are greatly inspired by both Chinese and English literatures. The finale piece, The Sunset by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, draws inspiration from Percy Bysshe Shelley s romantic poem of the same name. English literature plays a pivotal role in the history of world literature, alongside the complex historical and cultural encounters between the United Kingdom and Hong Kong. So it is quite fitting to conclude the concert with a musical imagery of classic English literature. JOCKEY CLUB New Arts Power in partnership with Musica Viva, previously had a mobile stage at Hong Kong International Airport earlier in July, providing travelers an opportunity to enjoy the beauty of music in a unique setting.
