Industry Supplier Overview Profile Industry Overview China s home entertainment industry is expected to remain stable or even see an increase in output and exports by year-end, securing the country s global hub status for the line. Makers are counting on opportunities in emerging markets such as Africa, Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, South America and the Middle East to help boost sales. This is to compensate for the lower requirements from key destinations Europe and North America. The two regions, however, will continue to drive demand, particularly for midrange and upscale products. Suppliers are therefore sustaining R&D efforts to release more high-value products while buoying the entry- and midlevel categories. They are concentrating on traditionally strong lines such as color TVs, speakers and systems, set-top boxes, and video players and recorders. The products collectively Main production center account for at least 80 percent of the country s overseas home entertainment shipments. In terms of worldwide output share in 2011, the first represented 49 percent and STBs 70 percent. For speakers and video devices, China also owned the majority portion. In the TV sector, makers are rolling out units with up to 32in and bigger HD LCDs and 70in HD PDPs supporting 1080p. There are some plasma models that even deliver 2640x1560 pixels. Companies employ LED backlight, although many continue to offer versions utilizing CCFL. Variants adopting the former kind now represent more than 50 percent of the LCD TV yield of numerous suppliers. This emphasis is reflected in the decelerating growth rate of the CCFL type. LED TVs strengthening market presence lies in their slimmer form factors and lower power consumption, which are major selling Guangdong About 80 percent of China s home entertainment makers converge in Guangdong province, specifically in Shenzhen, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhuhai and Zhongshan. The maker community is a crosssection of the industry, from small operations to major players. The area s comprehensive electronics supply chain remains its key attraction. points in the high end. Product thickness ranges from 20 to 50mm for LCD types and 40 to 65mm for plasma. To enhance energy-saving features further and comply with EuP directives, makers are adopting power-efficient components and optimizing circuitry. Most plasma releases deliver 1W current or less, and more will hit 0.5W on standby. Manufacturers also follow the developments in 3D and smart TV technologies to advance the large-screen line and keep up with international tier 1 players. Makers of the first adopt active shutter technology while exploring polarized panels to suit various cost requirements. As regards smart TVs, major local players TCL, Changhong, Hisense, Konka and Skyworth have launched their own versions. To bolster the category, the first three set up the China Smart Multimedia Terminal Technology Alliance. The group aims to promote technology development and set standards for the country s smart TV line. In coming months, more smart units with built-in Android OS are expected to be launched. To enliven the mature audio line, R&D efforts concentrate on raising power output and speaker sensitivity to improve overall product performance. Those in the hi-fi category have releases delivering 400W rms and 90dB/W m. Suppliers of home theater systems, meanwhile, are eyeing 30W in satellite speakers and 300W in subwoofers, and improving the S/N ratio to 85 to 95dB. More are adopting class D technology for built-in amplifiers. To help achieve these attributes, internal circuitry is simplified and quality materials for the www.chinasourcingreports.com 7
