IMPROVE ACCURACY AND PRODUCTIVITY BY USING DIGITAL READOUT SYSTEMS In a competitive market, using the latest technology to improve your productivity is essential. Adding a Digital Readout and Linear Encoders is one of the best ways to make a machine tool more profitable. The productivity and value of your machine tool will be increased when using an RSF Elektronik Digital Readout and Linear Encoders. Regardless of the machine tool, old or new, standard or special use, RSF Elektronik has the Digital Readout and Linear Encoders for your machine and application. Advantages of using Digital Readout Systems from RSF Elektronik Digital Readouts from RSF Elektronik can be mounted quickly and easily to your machine tool. Installation is simple using available mounting hardware. The Digital Readout displays the exact tool position at all times. No longer does the machine operator need to count handwheel turns or keep track of the dial position. Linear Encoders from RSF Elektronik measure the machine travel directly at the machine guideway. Lead screw error and backlash have no influence on the measuring accuracy. If your have questions during the Digital Readout or Linear Encoder installation, do not hesitate to contact our company or nearest RSF agent. THE DIGITAL READOUT SYSTEM Components of a complete Digital Readout System The system consists of one or more Linear Encoders, commonly referred to as scales, and a Digital Readout. The Linear Encoder measures the machine travel and the Digital Readout (sometimes called a DRO) displays the distance moved or machine table position to the operator. Core elements of RSF Elektronik Linear Encoders A Linear Encoder consists of two components: 1. the scale (extrusion/glass combination) and 2. the scanning head (reading head). The scale unit consists of a high accuracy graduation pattern printed on glass spar. A metal extrusion holds and protects the glass. Special shaped rubber sealing lips in the extrusion keep out coolants and contamination. The scanning head has a dual guided carriage to maintain alignment with the glass scale. The design of the scanning head carriage allows for a large mounting tolerance without affecting the accuracy of the scale. The glass scale is opto-electrically scanned using LEDs, photodiodes and a reticle. Operation mode of RSF Elektronik Digital Readout Systems The opto-electronics in the Linear Encoder scanning head convert distance movement into quadrature square-wave signals. These signals are transmitted to the Digital Readout, which in turn displays the distance moved or table position. Linear Encoders from RSF have reference index marks. The reference index marks are a very useful features if the Digital Readout loses power or if power is turned off. Linear Encoders from RSF Elektronik are also available with distance-coded reference marks: after travelling 20 mm the absolute position will be recalled on the display. Mounting a Digital Readout System on your machine To get the best accuracy, a Linear Encoder should be mounted as near as possible to the machine guideway. When mounted at guideway, the true guideway travel is measured, without an ABBE offset error. Neither lead screw error or backlash from a sloppy ball nut or hand wheel has any influence on the accuracy of the display position. The Digital Readout is mounted to the machine by a support arm/tray. This allows the machine operator easy access to the display for operation and reading the display. 04

THE ADVANTAGES OF A DIGITAL READOUT SYSTEM Advantages of a Digital Readout System Profitting from a RSF Elektronik Digital Readout System In the past, the operator of a machine tool without a Digital Readout System had to concentrate on reading and keeping track of the handwheel vernier dial. After a brief review of the Digital Readout System operations manual, you will immediately work faster with better accuracy. Scrapped and rejected parts will be reduced. The display shows the position in clear and bright digits. Digital Readouts from RSF Elektronik have more features than just displaying position. Refer to the specific models for a listing of the features. The RSF Digital Readout has a waterproof keypad and a rugged metal housing to ensure error free operation under harsh workshop conditions. Thread holes on the housing floor enable a simple mounting. Minimize your work time at the machine. Reduce the scrap rate and save material. Increase the accuracy and productivity of the machine. Decrease the time to move to the next position up to 63%. Investment pay back is achieved very fast. Example: A milling machine with table travel of: 700 x 400 x 450 mm The purchase and the mounting of the digital readout costs: about Euro 2.800, Profit and production increasing: mind. 20 % Working time: 135 h/month Machine costs per hour: Euro 60, /h Economies from machine changes: 20 % x Euro 60, x 135 h = Euro 1.620, /month 100 % h months Amortization: Euro 2.800, Euro 1.620, /month = 1.7 months 05

Z 300 OVERVIEW The Digital Readout Z 300 is especially suited for use on milling, drilling and boring machines and lathes with up to three axes. External input/output unit IFB 48 (ID 532 900-02) The IFB 48 input/output unit is attached to a standard NS 35 rail (DIN 46 227 or EN 50 022). It is connected to the Z 300 using the touch probe input. LEDs show the power supply, the data transmission and the status of the inputs and outputs. Accessory: Connecting cable complete with connector, between IFB 48 and Z 300 (ID 532 899-xx) Features 4 switching inputs 9 switching outputs 1 analog output Power supply via Z 300 Cable length 15 m to Z 300 Storage temperature Operating temperature Zero reset of axes 1 to 3 (for milling applications) Recognition of max. 3 operating gears (for turning appl.) External activation of CSS (for turning applications) 8 relay outputs as switching functions (for milling appl.) 1 relay output for readiness 0 to 10 V Turning mode: for constant surface speed Milling mode: for controlling the spindle speed 20 to 70 C 0 to 45 C Distribution cable complete with connectors, for parallel connection of IFB 48 and an edge finder to Z 300 (ID 532 909-01) The additional functions can be configured on the Z 300 when the IFB 48 is connected. Switching inputs The switching inputs are active when a High signal (contact or pulse) is present. They are isolated and can be supplied externally or internally. Signal level of the switching inputs 0 V U L 1.5 V 4.5 V U H 26 V I L 25 ma t min 100 ms Zero reset In the milling mode, each axis can be set to the display value 0 over an external signal. Detection of gear ranges In the turning mode, three switching inputs are available for the recognition of gear ranges. 08

Switching outputs The IFB 48 features nine floating relay outputs. Readiness The readiness output is at LOW level if the Z 300 cannot operate the IFB (e. g. not switched on, cable disconnected). Switching functions (milling mode) One or more switching ranges or switching points can be defined for an axis. Switch-off ranges lie symmetrically to the 0 display value. If switching points are used, the relay activates when the position display reaches a specific value. You can set whether the switching function should apply to the actual value or distance-to-go mode the relay will open or close when the condition is met or the relay remains activated as long as the switching condition is met (continuous mode) or for a specified duration (pulsed mode). Analog output Constant surface cutting speed CSS (only in turning applications) CSS provides spindle speed control as the diameter of the workpiece changes. A speed command signal is sent to the inverter of the spindle motor via the analog interface (DAC 0 V to 10 V) of the IFB 48. The maximum and minimum permissible spindle speeds can be specified. In addition, a maximum of three operating gears can be taken into account. The Z 300 recognize the current gear selection by means of the switching inputs of the IFB 48. CSS control can also be started remotely (via an input to the CSS board) with an external switch. Controlling the spindle speed (only in milling applications) With the analog outputs, the speed of the spindle on milling machines can be controlled in an open controlled loop. A spindle speed can be assigned to each tool defined in the tool table. The speed can be manually adapted during machining. 09
