Name: Title of book: #: Character Change Project: Directions Step 1 : Read your story with your group! I recommend reading it once, just for fun. The second time, stop and chat with your group about the book. Ask each other questions, such as, Who is the main character? What part do you think is the climax? How would you describe the character in the beginning? How would you describe the character in the end? Step 2 : Start filling out your graphic organizer. You may only do the first section together. After that, you need to work individually. (You will still need to share the book, though! Step 3 : Keep working on your graphic organizer. Work hard! If you do a great job on your organizer, you will probably have a great finished product! Step 4 : When you are done with the organizer, it is time to think about how you are going to present your information. Here are some ideas I have, but you are always welcome to come up with your own ideas! Be creative! Presentation Ideas: 1. Character Change Project Graphic Organizer Ms. Blatchford s Example Main Character: Mary Lennox Describe your character. Is it a boy, girl, animal? Where do they live? Include any details you think are important to the story. This is not the place to include traits. Mary is a ten year old girl who lives in India with her parents. Her parents don t have time for her, so she is raised by ayahs (nannies) and servants. Beginning Character Traits (2): Mary was heartless and spoiled. Text Evidence of the beginning traits: Mary was so heartless that she didn t really care when her parents died. On page 9 I read, Mary did not miss her mother at all, in fact, and as she was a self-absorbed child she gave her entire thought to herself, as she had always done. Mary was also extremely spoiled! She had been waited on hand and foot since she was a baby. She didn t even know how to dress herself! When she got to Misselthwaite Manor, she told Martha to dress her. Identify the conflict: There are many conflicts in the book. The main conflict is Mary s parents dying. Text Evidence of the conflict: On page 8 I read, It was in that strange and sudden way that Mary found out that she had neither father or mother left How did the conflict cause the character to change? When Mary s parents died, it changed Mary s entire world. Once she was at Misselthwaite Manor, she was no longer spoiled and was made to do things on her own. She developed curiosity, and when she found the garden she believed the garden had magical powers. That magic changed her. Identify the resolution: The resolution occurs when Colin and Mary are healthy and happy in the garden. Ending Character Trait (1): Mary became compassionate. Text Evidence of the resolution: Colin shouted, I shall get well! And I shall live for ever and ever and ever! Mary stood in wonder and looked at him with delight. (page 242) Text Evidence of the ending traits: An example of Mary being compassionate was when Colin had trouble falling asleep. Mary said, Shut your eyes and I will do what my Ayah used to do in India. I will pat your hand and stroke it and sing something quite low.
