September 2016 VOICES A newsletter for DGS Choral Boosters www.dgschoir.org Our Mission: Providing Support and Encouragement for Musical Opportunities A Note from the President Dear Parents: Welcome to the DGS Choral program! This year we are excited to announce that DGS Choir students have an opportunity to participate in a trip to New York City where they will perform at Carnegie Hall, work with adjudicators at Queens College, see a Broadway show and tour many of New York's sites. DGS offers a variety of choral opportunities to your student. There are five curricular choral classes: Freshman Girls Choir, the Overtones, Concert Choir, Treble Choir and A Cappella Choir, as well as four co-curricular ensembles: Freshmen Girls Select, Chamber Singers, Treble Ensemble and Madrigal Singers. The Choir Boosters provide support to these programs financially and with volunteers to enhance your students experience. How can you get involved with your student's choral experience? Attend one of our monthly meetings and learn more about us. We meet at 7:00 p.m. in the Choir Room (B126) on the following dates for the 2016/2017 school year: October 3, November 7, December 5, January 9, February 6, March 6, April 3, and May 1 Become a contributing member by donating $25 to the Choral Boosters. A member registration form is included in this newsletter Participate in one of the fundraising opportunities available to supplement your student's account as well as add to the Choir Booster budget. Volunteer to help the Choir Boosters. We offer many short term opportunities such as; joining the fundraising committee to assist with fundraising for the NYC trip; serving refreshments at a choral concert, middle school festival or at the year-end banquet; selling concessions; or assisting with dress rehearsals and performances. To volunteer, please visit dgschoir.org and click on the Volunteer/How to Help tab Attend the Choral Boosters social event we are planning in April 2017. We will send out more details as the date approaches. Please join us to support your choral student and the DGS choral program while socializing with other parents involved in the program. Please visit our website at dgschoir.org for more information about what we do. I look forward to seeing you at our first concert on October 18th. Laurie Olsen, President DGS Choral Boosters

Voice Lessons Student members of the DGS Choirs are provided with the opportunity to take private voice lessons during their choir class once per week. Nearly one third of the choir members have studied privately each year. Private voice study is highly recommended when students show an interest in working an improving their individual voice. While studying privately does not ensure a lead role in the musical or entrance into a select ensemble, the foundations laid through such training can greatly enhance students' gifted voice, their overall musical knowledge, and general confidence in presenting themselves in front of others. The DGS choral program has a slate of phenomenal professional vocalists and teachers that have been auditioned, interviewed, and specifically selected to guide our students. You can start lessons at anytime, but openings may be limited as the year progresses. The Voice Lesson Request Form can be picked up in the choir room (B124) or downloaded at www.dgschoir.org. Choral Volunteer Opportunities for the Fall Concert The DGS Fall Choir Concert is quickly approaching and a few volunteers are needed to help with the festivities. The concert will be held in the auditorium at 7:00 PM., on Tuesday, October 18th. Doors open at 6:30 PM. Before the start of the concert and during intermission, the Choral Boosters will be selling refreshments in the hallway outside the auditorium. Choir Spirit wear will also be available for purchase or to order the night of the concert. Refreshment Table Four people are needed to help set-up the table beginning at 6:00 p.m., sell water and candy before the concert and during intermission, and disassemble the table after the concert. We promise that those who volunteer will not miss any of the concert!! Those who would like to volunteer, please email Sherri Uhlen at Uhlen@comcast.net Please provide your contact information (via email). You will receive an email to let you know if your services are needed that night. If not, don t worry, there will be plenty of volunteer opportunities throughout the school year.

DGS CHOIR BOOSTERS CARNEGIE HALL/NYC TRIP STUDENT FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES There are two ways students can raise money to help pay for their trip to Carnegie Hall/NYC in March 2017. Sell Raffle Tickets: We have received theater tickets to Broadway in Chicago, Drury Lane and the Paramount theater. We also have sports tickets to a Cubs, Bulls and Wolves games. Students can sell tickets for $10 and the purchaser can decide if they want a chance to win either theater or sports tickets. The drawing will be held on October 18th at the Fall Concert. The student will receive $9 in their student account for each ticket sold. See Mrs. Coster for the tickets. Money will be turned in with the completed raffle ticket. Tickets will also be available at the concert on October 18th. See flyer for further details. Sell Advertisement for Concert Programs: Students can ask local businesses if they would be interested in advertising in the Fall and Spring Concert and Choir Show programs. A Booster member would advise them on the rates and assist them in determining which businesses to approach. They would receive 90% of the proceeds from ads sold. If a student is interested in selling advertisements, they can get a contract from Mrs. Coster. We hope these opportunities will make the trip more affordable for students!

Need more tickets? They will be available for pick up every Thursday after school
