It as remiered on Sunday, January 17, 010 ith Dr. Sutherland conducting honor orchestra in Fresno, Caliornia. When Dr. Sutherland discussed a commission ith comoser Dr. Gary P. Gilroy his only request as that Gilroy create a lush ork or strings, lyric in nature. Many o Gilroy s 100+ ublications are rather ild, energetic, and oten ritten or ind bands o one kind or another. This change o ace or Dr. Gilroy as a elcome challenge, although, ould have never been ossible ithout the exert hel o his Fresno State colleague, Dr. Thomas Loeenheim, Conductor o the Fresno State Orchestra and roessional cellist, and one o Gilroy s very talented conducting students, Miss Brook Okada, a violin major in Dr. Loeenheim s ine orchestra. Gilroy is very grateul or the guidance and assistance ith boings rovided by Dr. Loeenheim and Miss Okada. Just under seven minutes in length, With Quiet Relection rovides the erormer ith some assionate music to take the listen on a journey o calm and quiet relection. The melodic material is accessible to the listener hile stretching the erormer ith ide leas and some moments o dramatic dissonance. The ork is quite tonal ith melodies, almost haunting in nature, that are meant to stay ith the listener ell beyond the live erormance o the ork. The oortunity to comose music or thin and transarent textures as very aealing to this band comoser. Dr. Gilroy took ull advantage o this in his exloration o extreme sot dynamic levels and then critically dramatic moments at much louder volumes. He ound the ossibilities most delightul. As i to relicate these extreme dynamic contrasts, Gilroy used both minor and major tonalities simultaneously in several key sots throughout the ork to oer more tension and eventually release. Gary P. Gilroy (ASCAP) Born June 10th, 1958 Gary P. Gilroy is a Proessor o Music and Director o Bands at Caliornia State University, Fresno. In 199 he as aointed Associate Director o Bands and Director o the Bulldog Marching Band. Ater 1 years in this osition and building one o the inest collegiate marching bands on the est coast, Dr. Gilroy became Director o Bands in 006. Prior to this aointment he served or a decade as Director o Bands at Fred C. Beyer High School in Modesto, Caliornia here his band as aarded several national honors as ell as the International Sudler Shield Aard rom the John Phili Sousa Foundation. Gilroy also served as aculty at CSU, Stanislaus and graduate assistant at the University o Oregon in Eugene, Oregon here he comleted his doctorate in 1995. Gilroy has served on the board o Caliornia Band Directors Association or ourteen years and he is a Past President o that organization. He is also a Past President o the Fresno Madera Counties Music Educators Association. From 1999 to 006 he served on the board o the National Band Association as a Member At Large and the Western Division Chairman. Dr. Gilroy is in demand as a guest conductor o many honor bands throughout the United States. As an adjudicator and guest conductor he has served in 9 states and throughout Canada. Dr. Gilroy has been the conductor or all state grous in Colorado and Oregon as ell as the Caliornia Band Directors Association All-State High School Symhonic Band. An ASCAP Aard-inning comoser, Gilroy's music is ublished or concert band, marching band, and various ensembles through the Arrangers Publishing Comany, BRS Music, Inc., C. Alan Publications, Daehn Publications, Kagarice Brass Editions, Matrix Publications, TRN Publications, Warner Brothers, Wingert-Jones, Inc., and CPP/Belin Mills. His comositions have been eatured at the Bands o America National Concert Band Festival in Indianaolis, the Eastern Trombone Worksho in Washington, DC, the International Trombone Festival in Ne Orleans, and on many occasions at the International Midest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. Additionally, Gilroy s comositions have been erormed by many regional and state honor bands throughout the United States. Dr. Gilroy served as the arranger/comoser or the 008 Olymic Orchestra in Beijing, China. He has been an ASCAP Comosers Aard reciient every year since 001. Dr. Gilroy and his ie Dena have lived in Clovis, Caliornia since 199. His daughter, Alexandra, graduated rom UCLA in 010 and is currently a graduate assistant in band at UNLV and his son, Nicholas, is a music major at CSU, Long Beach.
