ANNOTATION The film portrays an ever-unhappy, swearing but also pensive necro-ranter who had spent half a year of his life in a romance with a mass-murderer-to-be before her crime. The film shows an aged, resentful being who hasn t lost a sense of humor despite his suffering. The film shows the world as a place, where dividing things into left and right seldom leads to anything worthwhile.
DIRECTOR ON FILM I got to know the leading character Miroslav D. when I was doing research for a feature-length film about the life of Olga Hepnarová. Olga Hepnarová was a young woman who lodged herself in the public consciousness by a barbaric act. In 1973 she drove a truck into a group of people, killing eight and badly injuring others. She wanted to take revenge for her miserable life, not on an individual but on people. As she had said, I am a human being who s been destroyed by human beings. First I naturally tried to get out of Miroslav D. as much information about Olga as I could, and about their relationship because Miroslav D. had lived with Olga for six months before her deed. Although, but perhaps for the very reason, that she was a lesbian, Olga Hepnarová regarded Miroslav as her only real friend. I kept asking questions but did not learn much, hardly anything. I got to know Miroslav as a man who kept talking about himself or about his milieu but mostly in relation to himself. Usually very aggressively. I got to know an asocial man, with traumatic childhood and uneasy life. I got to know a sensitive man as well. He struck me as somebody who loves life in spite of all the resentment he feels towards the world, in spite of all the dead bodies he had come across. I coined for him the term necro-palaverer. What I found attractive in his talk was the endeavour not to take sides. Not to lean to one side or the other. I feel in this desire for authentic being, not a tendency to extremism. I decided to make a film dedicated to him. I wanted to make a film about a negative existence bearing a secret he will never divulge. I was intrigued by the fact that although Olga and Miroslav had a similar world view, he would never have done such a thing. There s humour in his griping that keeps him going and keeps him from crossing the thin boundary line of insanity.
