Has anyone found something special about our school after the summer vacation? As some of you may know, our school underwent a series of renovation work during the past summer holiday. Let's take a quick look at which parts of our school have been renovated and what have been added to our school. Firstly, aside from the new slick look of our lobby at the entrance, I think most of you have noticed what first comes to sight when going up to your classrooms the old, reddish brown staircase has been replaced by a new delicate-looking staircase which is silvery grey in colour. A nice fresh look, don t you agree? Then, as you walk through the corridor on the ground floor, you may find that it looks brighter than before. That s because the ceiling has been replaced by a layer of glass which enables more sunlight to pass through, making the corridor look brighter and more comfortable.

1. suicide attacks 2+3. Twin towers/pentagon 4. hijacked 5. terrorists 2 A canopy has also been installed on the playground, which ensures that we won t be getting caught in the rain. We can then enjoy our recess and lunchtime even on rainy days under the cover of the canopy. Such a great idea!! We should be grateful for all these upgrades. Everything looks neat and snugly comforting to the eye. We look forward to seeing more friendly replacements or changes in our school. Today in History Something else you might have noticed that s new this year, if you ve been listening at the start of the term is Today in History over the PA system, in English!! The EMI team and English Department will be adding more skits of special days to not only get ourselves exposed to history, but to learn and recycle the words that we may know already. The very first skit was on 9-11. See if you can figure out the missing words: Terrorism / terrorist Hijack / hijackers Twin towers The pentagon Suicide attacks On 9th September, 2001, a series of 1) shocked the U.S.A and the world when the 2) and the 3) were struck by U.S. passenger airlines 4) by the Islamic group al-qaeda. This act of terrorisms done by 5) killed nearly people, injured over 6,000 others, and caused at least $10 billion in infrastructure and property damage. Answers:

What to watch on TV : <<The Song of Ice and Fire>> 3 "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die." ---Queen Cersei Lannister 5D Yoyo Lam No doubt, the most anticipated HBO drama is Season 7 of Game of Thrones (GoT). Nearly all social media are blasted with #GoT7 and its memes. It is such a blessing for me as a die-hard GoT fan. What is its magic that has contributed to its success? When you first heard of the name Games of Thrones, I bet you are seeing it as a tedious, old granny- piece of TV drama which solely focuses on boring fights for political power. But you re wrong - Game of Thrones is not just another documentary of quarrels in the HK legislative council. It is well-known for its twists in plots, details in every speech of wisdom, breathtaking and cruel fighting scenes (spoilers :my top favourite battle in this show has to be BATTLE OF BASTARD, and SPOILS OF WAR. I like it when a female could slaughter the man-led army with just a single word blow of "Dracarys". If you know what I mean,"dracarys" means dragon fire) and excellent movie-like CGI effects for its wolfy s and dragons. This definitely caught my eye who has never been interested in medieval fights before. Precautions referring to the above characteristics of GoT: 1. No plots are predictable. Prepare for a regular heart attack for every 30 minutes of the show. Remember, don t expect to watch Game of Thrones as a TVB drama. The writer George R.R. Martin and the filming crews are always smarter than you. 2. It's an adult recommended show, so decisions are upon you whether you are going to watch the x-rated scenes and brutal cut-throat/fray-skinned man scenes etc. 3.Try to remember the characters names and faces. Honestly, I could hardly recognise their faces during the first 10 hours of looping, especially when the old, wrinkled, white-bearded men looked all the same to me. 4. Find a place to watch it alone. You are going to scream and cry and laugh just like a psychopath. Trust me, I have never wanted to be labelled as a maniac by my sister.

4Game of Thrones is a big-time drama which spent over millions of dollars for just one episode. The clothing details are incredible. What s also interesting is that the filming crew even hired a linguist to create a new language system named Valyrian just for the show. It's a language used by people in Essos (a southern place in the seven kingdoms). Let's move to the most exciting part, in which my favorite character has to be Daenarys Targaryen played by Emilia Clarke. Daenarys, Dany for short, was originally a weak 12 year-old girl who was controlled by her brother Viserys. After she was forced to marry a savage Southern tribe Dothraki, her strengths and independence grew as she grew into a woman. Slowly, she learnt how to be a civilized queen and became ambitious enough to take over Kingslanding and rule the Seven kingdoms. Unlike her father Mad King, she did not burn people alive for entertainment. Instead, she slaughtered people who harmed her people in order to save the cities of the poor. I admire her for her beauty, bravery and benevolence. Unexpectedly, her love story is the most interesting as well! Overall, season 7 of Game of Thrones is extraordinary and beautiful. However, since this is the second final season, the filming crew is in a panic finishing the whole series. Hence, you will feel that the plots seem compact and a lot of the details are missing compared to the previous episodes. I feel like I've gone to a time travel because it only takes 5 minutes to sail from Kingslanding to the wall! Nevertheless, it's going to be exciting when the final season comes out in 2019. Quiz shows you might like to try The Big Fat Quiz of the Year This is an annual British quiz comedy in which three teams answer questions about news that happened in the year that has passed. Players display their answers, scoring a point for each correct one. Stand-up comedian Jimmy Carr has been the host and quizmaster of each edition to date. You can watch a few clips on YouTube if you would like to test your knowledge of the evens that happened around the world in a particular year. (warning includes undesirable language at times). Quite interesting (QI) This is a comedy panel game in which being quite interesting is more important than being right. Sandi Toksvig is joined each week by four comedians to share anecdotes and trivia, and maybe answer some questions as well. This will definitely widen your horizons on general knowledge and maybe even shock you with some unimaginable facts. Watch some on YouTube then and for some laughter and English exposure!

6 Summer in Cambridge 5D Albe Chik Did you all enjoy your summer holidays? Have you ever thought of spending half of your vacation in another country? In August, 14 students from our school joined a summer programme to University of Cambridge in England. I was one of the participants and I joined the science programme which included Physics, Chemistry and Biology. The professors in Cambridge were not only knowledgeable and professional, but they also taught us some life lessons that I could never forget. To start off, the programme did not only focus on the lessons, but also different activities that boosted our thinking. One of the highlights of the Science programme was the wide game. The wide game was a competition that included orienteering, puzzle-solving, as well as life-saving skills. You needed to search for the riddles all around the campus and solve the them. Topics covered were related to Geography, Medicine, Physics, Mathematics and Biology. I remember that I acted as a patient in one of the quests and my teammates had to get my wound bandaged. It took us almost half an hour to do that and luckily we completed the quest in the end. That was an unforgettable experience. Another highlight was the Horrible Hypothesis. Have you ever dreamt of being a detective when you were younger? My childhood dream came true! We needed to be a professional detective and solve a secret murder within a limited time. A professor was killed after his discovery of some huge diamonds. We needed to solve the murder to find the diamonds. The crime scene was set and we needed to study the fingerprints and the DNA left there. I enjoyed it very much as I could learn different aspects of science at the same time while I was investigating. Throughout the whole programme, the most memorable thing to me was the people there. I was in mentor group 15 with fellow schoolmates Victor Law, Walter Wong, and also two girls from Australia - Kat and Sophia. Our mentor, Brett was an undergraduate vet in Cambridge. He was knowledgeable and friendly. He acted like an elder brother and took care of us throughout the two weeks. He stayed by our side no matter what happened. I felt that I was more than welcome. Kat and Sophia were both enthusiastic girls. We spent the time together a lot. They were smart and confident who were never afraid to voice their ideas. Thanks to them, we created tonnes of memories.

7 A Death has Occurred 3C Chik Hei Yin Wonder what students in the school s English Gifted Programme learn? Last year, one group focused on creative writing techniques and each one had to write a complete short story. Instead of talking about it, well, why not show you a sneak peek at one of our schoolmates creative story. ~ Chapter Four~ Phoebe stared at the passing policemen absent-mindedly. A hole had opened up inside herself, leaving her hollow. Her vacant gaze sparked up when those mismatching red and white sneakers showed up at the edge of her vision. Mm something, Elora answered, mum about the facts. She pushed away the urge to wriggle out of her friend s embrace. After standing in place for another minute, she was once again on the street with a dissipated smile. What was her next move going to be? Interrogation? No telling if anybody would believe her. Looping security tapes back and forth? Would she have access? She needed to think. So back to the study it was then. Locking the door, she sunk into the plush chair, hands at her side. She began to work things through her head methodically, from snippets of information she overheard to what she actually saw. Placing a timeline of what happened inside her head. On the outside, she looked like she was sleeping, sleeping like a log, but her mind was spinning a hundred miles an hour. Nothing was typed, scribbled, nor did she even speak. All the information inside her head, she kept in the mental world, where it couldn t be touched. After an hour long debate with herself, she gave up. Opening her eyes to the dark sky, she decided to get a good dinner, play some music and watch some non-stimulating TV. Probably a comedy, she was worn out. And procrastinating. Elora could not believe herself as she stood in front of the police department s door. The sun was baking her, hurrying her to go inside. Beads of sweat rolled down her forehead, either from the heat or the nervousness of swallowing her pride, which was quite huge by the way. She fumbled with the doorknob. Oh just go inside! The annoying logical voice in her head groaned. She obeyed. ~ end of Ch 4 ~ To read Chik Hei Yin s complete story, keep reading our future issues of What s Up to find out more!
