PERVASIVE NATION CONNECT s IoT TESTBED

The objective of Pervasive Nation is to build an IOT Testbed of Scale which will become a crucial resource for industry, government and academia, and which will act as a catalyst for innovation in the IOT space.

What do we mean by scale? GEOGRAPHICAL SCALE (Ireland) DENSITY PER SQUARE KM (20K PER SQUARE KM?)

What do we mean by crucial resource for industry, government and academia? The network, though a research infrastructure, is robust. It is professionally run. It is a crucial step in proof-of-concept for an application/service/product rather than just a nice to have. It is possible to experiment/evaluate/play in any part of the end-toend infrastructure we provide. Meaningful evaluations that go beyond the connection of a few sensors for sporadic periods of time are possible. The scale leads to uncovering new insights. It is sustainable.

Being a crucial resource for industry, government and academic is also about working at the right technology readiness levels PERVASIVE NATION

What do we mean by a catalyst for INNOVATION? Ensure that plenty of ideas work through TRL4-7. Promote PN to CONNECT partners and industry at large. Create a suite of programmes/opportunities/events/hackathons around Pervasive Nation for interested parties to develop independent ideas. Use our interdisciplinary insights to provide wider insights around the types of companies and initiatives that are possible in this space

TYPES OF COMPANIES THAT MIGHT EMERGE IOT Network Infrastructures IOT Virtual Operator IOT sensors IOT design thinking IOT APP IOT Data Management IOT sensor integrator IOT Virtual Operator IOT APP IOT APP IOT APP IOT APP IOT Data Social Entrepreneurship IOT IOT Data Analytics

IN SUMMARY 1.BLANKET IRELAND IN IOT INFRASTRUCTURE 2.OPEN UP OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXISTING COMPANIES 3. SEED 200 NEW COMPANIES 4.CONNECT A MILLION THINGS 5.MAKE IRELAND THE DEFINITIVE IOT TEST ISLAND

LPWAN and IOT? The main part of the testbed will be based on low powered wide area networks LPWAN The IOT application space in large with many verticals health, agriculture, cities, education, transport, automation,.. In each of the verticals there are wide area network applications that need rich flows of data and for which power is not an issue and there are wide area network applications that only need short messages and for which power is a major issue it is these latter applications that are suited to LPWAN.

LPWAN A technology that supports small messages with specific duty cycles. A technology that supports low power end nodes and hence long battery life. A technology that is suited to accessing sensors in awkward spots. A technology that has a cost point that suits the end applications.

WE NEED TO EVOLVE to be crucial resource for industry, government and academia.. IoT is still emerging hence aspects of our testbed will allow us to compare behaviours and look at enhancements the software radio subsection.

THE IOT TESTBED LPWAN Using an emerging standard LoRa Software Radio Defined subsection for exploring enhanced options and for comparing different standards

EXAMPLES can evaluate management & control can evaluate basestation characteristics can evaluate sensors/ radios can evaluate overall performance Interference etc... can evaluate data centre related issues and business models can evaluate service design
