Beyond The Reference Where The Best Plasma Display Meets High-Performance LSI A Display That Adds More Life to Images In essence, a reference TV produces nothing less than satisfying, true-to-life images. To achieve the ultimate image quality of the VIERA ZT60 Series displays, we listened carefully to the wishes, wants and needs of many different and discerning TV viewers. The result is here now in Panasonic s newest display concepts and technologies. And in the ZT60, the flagship model of this all-new series of forward-looking plasma displays. For you, the ZT60 Series represents a distinct new class of higher-end home entertainment. One that seamlessly pairs Panasonic s most innovative plasma technology with the multi-function performance of the LSI (Large Scale Integration) chip to create image-quality capabilities well beyond the reference of any and all other HDTVs available today. The Newly Developed HEXA-Processing Engine We encourage you to view the new ZT60 Series for yourself, and let your own eyes decide. The Studio Master Panel The Studio Master Panel The Studio Master Panel is featured exclusively in the VIERA ZT60 Series. Air Gapless Technology, an advanced development with highly demanding requirements, made this breakthrough possible. One of these requirements is a special fabrication device called an autoclave. The special filter in the Studio Master Panel fully integrates this technology. There are, however, very few autoclaves large enough to support a 65-inch panel. This scarcity limits the number of TVs that can be produced with this special filter, which establishes the ZT60 Series as a unique and premium product. 2 3
No Air Layer Like ou've Never Seen it Before Studio Master Panel Even though the number of production units is limited, Panasonic s overriding goal of maximizing image quality demanded inclusion of this filter. Air Gapless Technology and fabrication equip it with superior optical characteristics, and achieve a major improvement in bright-field contrast and image sharpness. Display Light is Directly Transmitted 2012 With Air Layer 2013 No Air Layer Originally developed by Panasonic, Air Gapless Technology eliminates the air layer that traditionally existed between the front glass and the panel unit of conventional TV models. By bonding the front glass directly to the panel unit, Panasonic removed the reflections caused by differences in the refractive index at the glass interface to transmit the display light directly and efficiently. This bonding allows the filter to eliminate double images and glare, and produce crisp, clear images with high bright-field contrast. Pre-Discharge Greatly Improves Dark-Field Contrast The VIERA ZT60 Series also achieves better contrast. As production technologies continue to develop, panel quality is constantly raised through factors such as in-plane uniformity. This uniformity makes it possible to stably lower the voltage used for charge control, which, in turn, decreases the light emission for pre-discharge. The end result is a dramatic enhancement of dark-field contrast. The Studio Master Panel, which enhances both design and bright-field contrast, as well as pre-discharge control to further improve dark-field contrast, also refines black reproduction in virtually all viewing situations, resulting in Panasonic's unparalleled Supreme Black. Excellent Gradation from Sub-field Adjustment Plasma displays express gradation by using a sub-field drive that combines groups of light emission pulses. Various approaches have been repeatedly applied to improve the sub-field drive and gradation, then to match them precisely to brightness and performance. New Light Emission 30720 Steps* Conventional Light Emission 6144 Steps One of these approaches, led by Panasonic, optimized the sub-field structure by providing modes, such as Cinema and Dynamic modes, that suit various content and personal viewer preferences. An approach to match gradation to other performance factors has been applied for some time. Panasonic also led the competition in finely analyzing each image frame and applying an adaptive drive method. eld 1 fi Air Gapless Technology also makes it possible to optimize the aesthetic beauty of the single-pane bonding concept, and dramatically improve the TV s overall design.. 4 GRADATION Brightness BLACK Light Emission Step Reduced to 1/5 The Approach to Optimizing Based on Visual Perception Panasonic has remained consistently at the forefront of using human vision characteristics to optimize the panel, drive and signal processing, and to redefine actual image-quality performance. Natural, Smooth and Expressive There is, however, a limit to improving each of these individual factors because they eventually end up in a trade-off relationship with each other. In the VIERA ZT60 Series, human vision characteristics have been applied to technical development themes such as non-uniform gradation correction, motion-adaptive gradation control and micro light-emitting sub-fields. All of which increase the overall S/N ratio, improve the dynamic range in the low- and mid-brightness areas, and help achieve smoother gradation. In the ZT60 Series, sub-fields were increased by accelerating the drive to enable smooth gradation across the entire low-to-high brightness range. At the same time, both panel quality and charge control were improved to accomplish a micro-light emitting sub-field drive. By introducing a variety of new technologies in this manner, the minimal light emitting brightness step was reduced to one-fifth, compared to 2011 models. Extremely fine gradation with 30,720 steps* was achieved. This level of gradation, for example, makes it possible to reproduce the soft, finely nuanced texture of velvet for a highly natural appearance. *When using Cinema mode. 5
COLOR Breathtaking Red Color Reproduction Use of the new Pure Red Phosphor has resulted in rich, vivid color reproduction, and in Panasonic's highest image quality to date. The Pure Red Phosphor integrated into the VIERA ZT60 Series dramatically demonstrates this industry-leading improvement in color purity and reproduction. The area coverage of the ZT60 Series color gamut is 122% of the ITU (Rec. 709) standard and 98% of the DCI studio standard, for coverage of nearly the entire area. By greatly expanding the gamut of red, to which the human eye is particularly sensitive, vibrant red coloring and a wider, more true-to-life color gamut are attained. 0.7 Plasma displays that previously achieved a satisfactory color gamut for the high-definition color reproduction performance of HDTV standards, are now able to virtually satisfy DCI studio standards as well. Considering the high sensitivity of the human eye to red hues, evocative scenes, such as sunsets, can now be fully viewed in cinema-like quality. Panasonic analyzed all of the factors that affect motion-image performance based on human vision characteristics, which led to this simple, intuitive rule covering virtually every display: "Motion-image Plasma displays are well known for their high-speed pulse light emission and excellent motion-image response. With the VIERA ZT60 series, Panasonic has accelerated drive technology and device materials to further improve their motion-image performance. ITU 8% % 122 0.4 v 0.3 0.1 0.1 0.0 tem 0.2 0.3 0.4 u 0.5 0.6 300 0F 0.7 = s c. m se 33 0 0. 300 1/ 0.2 Sys 201 3 DC VIER I A ITU I9 DC 0.5 Hz = s c. m se 10 20 1 1/ 0.6 3000 Focused Field Drive FD performance is determined by the 1/60th of a second during which light is emitted onto the retina." In other words, displays having a light emission time of only 1/nth of 16.6 milliseconds exhibit a response of N times the original light emission time (16.6 ms). The same principle applies when capturing a moving subject with a camera; the shorter the shutter opening time, the sharper the image. Based on this principle, Panasonic assigned numerical values to signal processing and drive and device characteristics to calculate the actual time during which light is emitted onto the retina. The inverse number of this calculation is expressed as the FFD (Focused Field Drive), which serves as an index to improve motion-image performance. The ZT60 Series has achieved an ultrafast light emission of 1/3000th of a second, or 0.33 millisecond. This was aided by panel improvements, and especially boosted by Panasonic's new Pure Red Phosphor. Compared to 2012 models with 2500 Focused Field Drive motion-image performance, this new series is a major step forward. e m Ti re t) tu len er va Ap qui (E Thanks to their superior color reproduction characteristics, plasma displays have long been able to cover 100% of the ITU (Rec. 709) Crisp, Clear and Natural color gamut. Ongoing efforts to produce models that comply with DCI standards have also continued, but focused primarily on professional monitors. With the introduction of this new red phosphor, Panasonic has successfully created a true reference display for home use; a display that reproduces the color gamut of both high-definition broadcast and studio standards. 120 A number of different color spaces are used to define the display s color reproduction range, but those that are most essential for HDTV are ITU (Rec. 709) for highquality broadcasting sources and DCI for movie studios. 6 MOTION Beyond the Reference Color Level Lig ht i Em ss ion 7

They include Air Gapless Technology for better bright-field contrast, Ultimate Black with advanced gradation and motion-image response for enhanced dark-field contrast, plus a dramatically improved color gamut centered on red. VIERA ZT60 Series plasma displays use the Active Shutter method for 3D imaging as well, in which images for both left and right eyes maintain Full-HD quality to ensure that the heightened superiority of the image expression is fully realized, and thoroughly enjoyed, in 3D. Active Shutter 3D Eyewear FULL HD 3D Image Display Frame Sequential Technology The technology behind the left-eye and right-eye 3D images seen by the viewer is key to 3D-image quality. For this, Full-HD 3D uses Frame Sequential technology. With this technology, the plasma display panel, which has a number of inherent advantages for moving-picture resolution, is enhanced to allow images for the left and right eyes to be alternately reproduced at the rate of 60 frames per second (fps); a total of 120 fps for both eyes. Viewers see images through high-precision 3D eyewear that opens and closes the left and right shutters in sync with alternating images. As a result, a separate high-quality image is sent to each eye. Frame Sequential technology fully addresses the image-quality problems and blurring common in previous 3D systems to create crisp 3D images. Panasonic FULL-HD 3D is defined as follows: Compatible with a 1080p 3D signal A panel with native resolution of 1920 1080 pixels Smart Calibration Rather than simply making adjustments, some users prefer to calibrate their TV s image parameters to suit their own preferences, while also taking full advantage of the TV's true performance capabilities.
