International Film Festival Sinnington Chapel August 2015 Wait a minute...in Sinnington?...have you read that right? Yes! Our monthly Film Nights during the winter are a regular feature of the chapel s activities in Sinnington. We have shown some outstanding films, including award winning films from Japan, Chile and France, normally shown only in major city art-house cinemas. During a special fortnight this August there will be a second chance to see some of the most challenging or entertaining films that you may have missed first time round, or may wish to see again, as well as a couple of films that will be shown for the first time.
We try to be scrupulous in keeping to the terms of our film performance licence, which has strict limits on permitted advertising and means we only promote on-site at the chapel. Films start at 7pm and we break at a convenient half-way point in the film for light refreshments appropriate to the summer season. There is no charge, just a collection plate for donations if you wish to contribute to chapel funds. Programme details overleaf Thursday, August 6 th Nostalgia for the Light (Cert E) Cert E = exempt from classification The sky above Chile s Atacama Desert (the driest desert on earth) allows astronomers to see the boundaries of the universe. Women sift the desert for the bones of their loved ones. This film is a gorgeous, deeply moving, and personal odyssey into astronomy, geology and human rights. Monday, August 17 th Wadja (Cert PG) Wadja is the first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia by the nation s first female director. All that Wadja wants is a bike so she can race against the boy who lives next door, but her mother refuses to buy her one: in Saudi Arabia little girls do not ride bicycles. After careful consideration of the matter Wadja cannot see the logic in this, so she takes matters into her own hands and decides to raise the money for a bicycle herself. Wednesday, August 19 th The Act of Killing (Cert E) When the government of Indonesia was overthrown by the military in 1965, more than a million people were killed in less than a year. Anwar and his friends were promoted from ticket scalpers to death squad leaders; Anwar killed hundreds of people with his own hands. In this film, Anwar and his friends agree to tell us the story of the killings. But their idea of being in a movie is not to provide testimony for a documentary: they want to be stars in their favourite film genres gangster, western, musical. They write the scripts. They play themselves. And they play their victims. The Act of Killing is a nightmarish vision a journey into the memories and imaginations of the unrepentant perpetrators and the shockingly banal regime of corruption and impunity they inhabit. more overleaf
Friday, August 21 st Waste Land (Cert E) Filmed over three years, this Oscar nominated film follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramache, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.
