SARC minutes from 08 October 2018 SARC Board meeting A list of items planed for the installation dinner prizes was discussed. Treasurer Keith N6WZZ wasn t present to report on the SARC bank account. The board agreed to move the speaker to the front of the meeting. Discussed the FCC article in the newsletter about non-compliant VHF/UHF transceivers. SARC General meeting Present Steve KK6JTB opened the meeting at 7 pm and thanked Judith N7TTH for bringing the snacks. He then introduced John Kristy of the Indian Wells Valley Ground Water Authority committee. John indicated the whole issue of ground water sustainability came about in the 2014 California law called the Sustainability Ground Water Act. A committee was formed to create a plan to meet the law before the state took over the authority of the area and forced us into something we didn t want. The committee has some 100 years of data to look over. The committee has two subcommittees, a Technical Advisory committee and a Policy Advisory Committee. The Policy Committee is looking at many ways to do the plan and things to include in it. The Technical committee of which John is a part, is looking at the science of how what ever plan could be done. One can use the internet to check out the website IWVGWA.org. There was a discussion of the use of gray water like the base golf course uses to keep the grass green. Ridgecrest City has been looking at gray water uses for many years. A preliminary report of the helicopter survey is to be presented at city hall sometime soon. Brackish water clean up has been discussed. Proposition 3 on the up coming election deals with the water issues. There are water bottling companies like Crystal Geiser to the north of us that are taking water out of the Owens Valley area and selling it all over the world. Questions and comments were taken. President Steve thanked John for coming to speak to us about this current and important issue. We had two visitors; David Norcross WH6EAD and Bonnie Ryan W6CAE, welcome. Steve asked folks to sign up for snacks in the future meetings. Mike WA6ARA talked about fixing the echo link on the repeater. Dave W6TLA talked about the IWV ARES group meeting on the 4 th Thursday 6:45 at the hospital conference room. Bob AD6HF said there still is some HF DX to be worked. President Steve KK6JTB asked for more folks to sign up for the upcoming Bill Thornburg horse ride coming up on the 21/22 weekend and to contact Tammy KG6VYA. Pacificon is also on that October 20/21 weekend. Boy Scout Jamboree On The Air is also on that same weekend. Show and tell had Steve N6MVX show off his new Ultra Fire flashlight he purchased on Amazon and the booklet and eyeball QSL card he received when he visited NIST WWV station in Colorado. Steve indicated he was the first visitor to WWV in two years and that the funding for NIST operations is being cut, so WWV may not be on the air much longer. Upcoming SARC support events include the Ridgecrest Desert Classic bike ride on November 17; Desert Ultra Marathon on December 2; the Fire Mountain horse ride in January 12/13; the ARRL Winter Field Day January 26/27; and the 20 Mule team horse ride on February 23/24. Nominations for the officers of SARC in 2019 include; President Steve KK6JTB, 1 st Vice President Mike WA6ARA, 2nd Vice President is open, Secretary Bill WA6QYR, and Treasurer Mark W6BST. The door prize went to Mike WA6ARA and the 50/50 prize $10 went to Mark W6BST. The meeting closed at 8:30. Submitted by Bill WA6QYR SARC Secretary.

Debits for ice cream social expenses. Keith Middleton N6WZZ SARC Treasurer 147.00 Repeater News! SARC's 147.00 repeater has been replaced. For the most part, there will not be any changes to you the user, except for a much improved receiver. Power output is limited to 20 watts at the present time (vs 110 watts for the old repeater). Also, the Alstar and Echolink functions at not implemented at this time. We hope to have both functional in the future. Operation is exactly the same, same frequencies and tones. You should not have to make any changes to your radio. There is a time out timer of 3 minutes. I.E. if you transmit continuous for longer than three minutes the repeater will shut down. It will reset automatically. There is no courtesy tone, only the squelch sound. Also, no announcement at 8am or 6pm. Again, these may be implemented at a future date. So far, the reports of performance have been outstanding! It certainly hears much better than it did in the past. We now have HT capability for most, if not all, of the valley. To the north good performance thru Coso Junction and to Olancha. So, please enjoy the repeater. We are in a testing phase and want to hear how well, or not, it is working for you. We all owe a big thanks to Ed, WI6RE, for donating the repeater and to Bob, K6ECM, for work in putting it on the air.

Bill Thornburg Endurance Ride Jeff and Julie Potter, N6LIPl & W6FIA Jeff and myself volunteered for the Bill Thornburgh Endurance Ride as new helpers for an event SARC has assisted for a time now. Special thanks to Tammy Johnson, KG6VYA who did a great job organizing the communications portion of this event, also being base camp net control for the entire time. What a cool fun time we all had together assisting the riders. Ham Radio was an important part of the Endurance Ride thanks to SARC Ham Radio operators. Hope to see you next year at the Bill Thornburgh Endurance Ride. P S - Lunch was provided and for dinner volunteers met at the base camp "Chuck Wagen" for a home cooked tritip meal with Cowboy coffee and dessert, too.
