This decision was made on he behalf of SCEPP and ne Academic Wing. The proposal was made by Dr. Engbreson in June bu since faculy and he sudens grumbled we will go on wih he eigh week sessions bu more ime will be spen in he classroom in direcive learning aciviies. Therefore, afer careful consideraion and some pressure from Norh Cenral Accrediaion, he adminisraion has changed he GSU schedule. This decision came abou as a resul of he eigh week calendar no giving a semeser's worh of work io eigh week's ime. The faculy, filling ou a quesionnaire were 60% agreeable o he fac ha no enough work was done in eigh weeks. This new policy will be given exensive sudy in April 1975", said Dr. Endres. She also remarked ha GSU could sill go ino rimesers if he findings of heir sudy did no saisfy he Norh Cenral Assn. nor he adminisraion. She did say, however, ha he new policy will be given sufficien ime o be examined. Some of he problems associaed wih he eigh week calendar were of wo general ypes-educaional and logisical. On he educaional side, here is much concern among some faculy and adminisraors abou he relaionaship beween_ he calendar and academic qualiy. Furhermore, logisical problems have conribued o he lack for flexibiliy in he lengh of offerings. Where here should be flexibiliy for offering and aking modules, GSU appears a his lime o be srapped ino a sysem of locksep eigh - week sessions following all oo quickly afer one anoher. SCEPP conends ha he major logisical problem is ha of ime faculy spends on prerecording of compeency saemens, preparaion and revision of learning modules, compleion of saff repors, ec. As a resul SCEPP has promped he following policy; The minimum conac ime beween he coordinaor and suden shall be 15 hours per uni in direced learning aciviies oher han reading assignmens. The normaj definiion of a credi uni a GSU shall be 15 hours of conac learning aciviies. Every module descripion shall presen a schedule of conac ime beween sudens and coordinaors in such forms as suden designed seminar presenaions, lab experimens, observaion of media maerials, suden workshees, projecs, uoring and lecuring. The norm for direc in-class conac ime beween he Coordinaor and suden shall be 15 hours per uni. Because of various modes of delivery of insrucion employed a GSU, he conac ime may vary from module o module. However, modules in which he deviaion from he norm leads o less han 15 hours per uni of direc in-class conac ime shall have in he module syllabus, or as separae wrien saemen, an explanaion of he insrucional aciviies accouning for he deviaion from he norm. This saemen will require he approval of he Dean and will be kep on file in he Dean's Office. The Academic Vice Presiden shall be responsible!_or he overall adminisraion of his policy. Skyer Veerans have privile ges The Veerans Readjusmen Ac of 1914 is bung up on he house of represenaives on he very poins ha would make he modern GI Bill comparable wih he WW n bill. There are wo poins of conenion in quesion. The firs is he monhly enilemen for educaion increase of nine monhs. The proposed increase would give veerans of he Vie Nam Era 45 monhs of educaion compared o 48 monhs on he WW n bill. The second poin is uiion assisance of $720 per year on a cos sharing basis wih he veeran suden. The WW II bill paid up o $500 per year in uiion, wih no sharing of he cos on he veeran. The WWII Bill paid single veerans 78 per monh wih (a ha ime) unlimied uiion, even Harvard wasn' higher han he bill allowed for. Today he single veeran is expeced o pay uiion and subsis on $220 per monh. Many people are under he impression ha he GI Bill is a give away program. Well in a way ha is rue. The veeran gave o his counry a few years of his life a he pay scale of abou 11 cens per hour during he war in Vie Nam. The veeran also had he opporuniy o bleed and die for his counry, somehing ha he inellecual snobs abhorred and shied away from. I is no big news ha he VieNam war was fough by he sons of p(jor and working class families. Those who could afford o go o school experienced comba on he 6:00 news. Hard life, being an " inellecual." The big news, (old o he veeran), is ha Richard Nixon wans o eliminae he Veerans Adminisraion. Roy Ash of Office of Managemen and Budge, ried o cu off pensions for disabled veerans wo years ago. Disabled is he polie erm for crippled..afer all, wha ever gave veej1u18 he idea ha he governmen ha sen hem o war should help hem if hey were cripplea'! Afer all, who really needs hings like.eyes, arms, legs, 1Uld faces? Is suppor for he widow and children necessary? Nixon, Ash and company would have you believe i is no. Afer all, isn' i a privilege o serve your counry? Seems o mer beard ha one as I was preparing for a beliborne comba assaul. The heory, behind he eliminl!ion of veerans benefis is Uis: We now have an all voluneer miliary. Therefore, hey know ha hey may be killed, crippled or capured. So why worry abou hem? Soldiers; however, are no as supid as he poliicians would have you believe. Why should hey figh and die knowing ha heir widows and children will be ou on he sree wihou any compensaion if he buys his farm (ge killed)? I submi ha he miliary is in real rouble oday. The serviceman knows ha Vie Nam ves have paid dearly for he "privilege ~ of serving heir counry. They can' ge jobs because "all Vie ~am ves are junkies." Educaional benefis don' buy he educaion hey once did. VA Hospials are overcrowded so hey close a few down in "economy" moves. Compensaion for wounds and diseases are nooriously hard o ge. Reconsrucive surgery is nearly impossible. However, Nixon, Ash and he Congress were never wounded or crippled. So here we are. We have a congress ha doesn' hink Vie Nam Ves are equal o WWII ves. Vie Nam ves mus have a 30% disabiliy before hey can ge vocaional rehabiliaion. wwn ves sill only require a 10% raing. I would seem ha a missing leg is no really he same as a missing leg 25 years laer. I am sure ha Arisole would find heir logic ineresing. Nixon, Ash and company figure i ou jus a lile differenly. To hem, a missing leg is jus he same as a leg ha is no missing a all. I is clear as mud, bu i covers he ground. Perhaps I lack a poliical mind or perhaps hey jus lack a mind. Cri sis a GSU Sudens i is in your immediae ineres o involve yourselves in he funcioning of he Suden Services Advisory Commiee. This commiee is given he responsibiliy of reviewing suden requess for ravel, peiions for forming organizaions and providing oher services as hey relae o suden needs on campus. There have been several noices and adver8semens in he INNOVATOR and bullein boards requesing suden paricipaion on his very imporan commiee. This fall and in upcoming sessions, MSU residens will be acceped and regisered in universiy colleges. The uilizaion of programs wihin he universiy Office of Financial Aids ( Federal work / sudy, graduae assisanships, Illinois Sae Scholarships, and universiy waivers, ec.) are crucial o hese sudens who lierally have no income. Rising in expense are books, ravel, and suden paricipaion in universiy and communiy aciviies. Transporaion o and from each insiuion is a major and essenial issue for MSU residens in pursui of academic work a Governors Sae. The universiy, he Deparmen of Vocaional Rehabiliaion, and he Depar men of Correcions mus bring ogeher heir resources and esablished commimens o insure hese sudens' acive involvemen in he GSU communiy. If he saed mandaes and objecives of Governors Sae universiy hold rue, we will recognize and creae his ideal opporuniy o ouch he vas poenial and human resources waiing behind closed/ locked doors. Governors Sae has proclaimed having "opened" her doors. The GSU communiy now mus consider opening anoher lach. A very special dimension will be added in he suden populalion of our " unique" universiy. One wih a very real awareness of power srucure, social forces, groups, human relaions, self-moivaion and injusice, o name very few. Ain' ha he damdes hing you ever seen o be reaed like a mule and come ou a human being?? _. While he air waves and much prin is devoed o informaion abou he Waergae hearing, rial ec. many people in he "hood ~' are saying less and less abou ha Waergae mess! Afer all are no black ax payers eniled o a lile more represenaion? Wha abou all hose broken promises' of yeserday? When will he dreams of grea men living and dead be honored? Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, Dr. Marin L, King ec. Now we. in he "hood" are hearing quie rumbling abou wha " ricky Dick" is supposed o have said abou poor and black folks. Racial slurs is wha hey are being called in he naional media. Well one hing is cerain; hey could no be any more indicaive of he rue bigoed poliician han whie goes wih rice. Slowly bu surely he ruh is coming o ligh. The presiden of hese Unied Saes have been deeply involved in he "Cover up" of he [acs abou he Waergae affair. For a while he naion was playing around wih he idea ha a presiden could and should do whaever he saw fi in he adminisraing of he affairs of his mos prosperous naion. Well low and behold king Richard now.. The ime for he big pay back is a hand. Righ on for he Judiciary' commiee, le's ge i on!! Time for giving and ime for living. No ime for baing anyone. Well don' swea -good [iizens; super cooljs going o SI'Jlooh.hjng hing ou. Mer 8'11 didn' he say; " I fimcion bes under pressure"? One of he mos amazing hings o noe is his: Wha did he supporers of he presiden hink would have happened if he Black Panher Pary's en poin program had been undersood by he masses of Americans? Naional peace??? Maybe. One hing is cerain we will never know now. The radical elemens in America are laughing heir asses off. The piy of he maer is ha now he supporers of he "law and order" adminisraion are he chief head huners afer he fac!! America will sand and perhaps begin o undersa.nd he " rumbles from below" as a resul of he curren purging of slick, greedy, conniving poliicians from he halls of jusice and governmen in America. Black and poor folks have been se back almos weny years on all frons in his naion. Wha nex? Who knows. Who cares? The bea goes on and on. forever and ever. You should be asking yourself where i's going and wha i's paying for. This is wha he SSAC is supposed o be concerned wih. In poin of fac, i couldn' even form a quorum o bold a meeing on Tuesday, Augus 6h. There are oo many vacancies. Too many people were preoccupied. Too many people don' care and as a resul oo many people may ge screwed. Bu if you're jus going o lay down and ake i hen you deserve o ge screwed. So don' bich abou i when i happens. Righ on Leo! rehabi I iaion by Cornelius Jackson One would imagine ha he goal of correcional adminisraors oday would be o rehabiliae offenders. Bu when one examines he counry's correcional insiuions, and heir rehabiliaive process you can' help bu ask yourself a quesion. Do lawmakers and adminisraors of he criminal jusice sysem have rehabiliaion confused wih some oudaed and meaningless acics ha were used hundreds of year's in he pas? I refer o he fac ha basically he American criminal jusice sysem sill relies on punishmen for reribuion and.deerrence for crime. I would appear ha when you're alking abou and purporing o pracice rehabiliaion, ha you need o be aking posiive seps o resore ha which is unserviceable or non-funcioning, o a serviceable, funcioning sae. Punishing for he sake of reribuion and deerrence appears o be incompaible wih rehabiliaion. Ye, "punishmen" is he name of he game in our criminal jusice sysem. ' The erms Correcional Deparmens, Ceners, and Rehabiliaion programs are misleading. Since in hese places here exiss aciviies which alienae, damage, demoralize, ana anger offenders. Changing iles or using new progressive w~ o d!sguise wha really goes on inside he insiuions is really meaningless, when in all acualiy he insiuions are sill operaing on he radiional punishmen concep of prisons. For example, changing he ile of a Dep. of Public Safey o Dep. of Correcions means nohing if no firm and lasing commimen is made by he deparmen adminisraors o change he aciviies of he deparmen. My aim is no o single ou any paricular sysem, I refer o he overwhelming majoriy of criminal jusice sysem's in his counry. Ask yourself hls quesion... Why remove an offender from his family, frie_nds, and communiy o a siuaion ha dehumanizes and alienaes ha individual from he sociey o which he mus reurn? Why reurn he individual o sociey wihou giving Mm he opporuniy o learn wha he mus do in order o be producive, or o change wha is disrupive in his behavior? I sands o reason ha an offender reurning o sociey wihou being involveain any fonn of Change and growh program while incarci!raed, is very likely o remain in a coninuing cycle of imprisonmen-socieyimprisonmen. As i sands now, he real job of rehabiliaing an offender is dumped in he-laps of he communiy, he family, and employers of ex-qffenders afer be is released from prison. ~ Today prison is ofen a siuaion where people canno change he hings ha brough hem here, or really learn (no jus ge a cerificae) ha which needs o be learned, in order o be producive ciizens, or someimes jus o be safe. Federal, Sae, and local axes are being paid by sociey o have he ask of rehabiliaing, reinegraion, or socializaion o be perfonned by ~rspecive governmenal agencies. Bu, in he insiuions oday _ his job is no being done. This causes he ax payer o be burdened wice. Firs when he job is no done in prison, and second when hey (he axpayer) haveodohe_job hemselves afer he offender is released from he insiuion. I seems more han reasonable for he correcional adminisraors o give he ax payer an even break, by performing heir job proyerly. If he job is no going o be performed properly, hen sop misleading he ax payers. If punishmen is needed for reribuion and a deerrence for offender, hen devoe all he energy ha is used in deceiving he axpayer o creae secure places ha specialize in punishmen. The penal sysem is ruly unjus and cruel when you look. a he many unforunae prisoners ha are incarc~aed, and no really criminally inclined. Incarceraed for some foolish misake hey made, probably a misake ha an unhealhy social environmen manifesed. This individual may come ino he insiuion wih he aiude of serving his ime and causing no probl~- for hemselves or he insiuion. They ofen come o he insiuion wih he misconcepion ha hey will reurn o sociey a producive and responsible ciizen. The misconcepion comes from he hough he individual has of coming o a "correcional cener", insead of he radiional penieniary. Unforunaely due o he lack of change and growh, and oher guidance programs he individual is very likely o become desponden wih' he insiuions poor and someimes non-aisen programs. This lack of aciviy in m06 cases causes he individual o implemen his own form of aciviy, or ge involved in aciviies ha ohers have implemened. I refer here o n~-approved organizaional sb:udures, groups. ec. Neison Unil recenly, I, had never seen a producion of "The Fanasicks," he world's longesrunning musical. Now, having seen Miss Peggy Powers' producion of i, I no only hope o see i again, bu plan o ake my friends along. This play, by Tom Jones and Harvey L. Schmid, has enjoyed mass appeal because : of is decepive simpliciy of heme: romanic young love mauring wih he passing of ime. The plo is simple: neighboring fahers secrely plan a mach; echnique: concoc a bogus feud, build a wall, and forbid he young people o inerac; resul: romanic love, which, supposedly, hrives on obsacles. This heme is derived from Edmond Rosand's " Les Romanesques," which, in urn, i is heorized, was inspired by a fifeenh cenury inerlude enilled "Fulgens and Lucres." The Prairie Sae Junior College producion I aended replicaed he saging echniques of he fifeenh cenury Guild Wagons, which were buil and spqnsored by he Guilds, who seleced appropriae plays o perform. The players are cosumed in suiably medieval dress, and he scrip is in keeping wih h.e fifeenh cenury scrips of childlike direcness and simpliciy. Bu his wenieh cenury reviewer feels ha "The Fanasicks," like mos works which deal weji wih enduring hemes, is like an onion, whose layers reveal more han he surface migh lead us o expec. The characer of Luisa, he young girl, is ha of a romanic, spoiled princess. Now, I would like o alk abou he concep of princesses. Firs of all, you don' have o be a girl o be ode: princess-iy crosses all sex, religious, ehnic r,nd racial lines. The percepion of seeing oneself as a princess <and projecing ha image o he ouside world, which responds o i), is based on a very simple noion, really: ha you are he cener of he universe, a sor of uncrowned royaly o which ohers pay homage, ribue and adoring aenion. Jus how his sae of being comes abou, I don' really know - I could heorize ha i may well be he resul of oo much posiive/ negaive.aenion given o he young child, or he placing of oo much/ oo lile responsibiliy on ha child, which, I suppose, is really anoher form of aenion. Bu he heorizing of personaliy developmen is no really my concern whereas he resuls of ha developmen and he ineracions and inerrelaionships caused by ha direcion in.developmen ineres me. So-we are dealing wih a princess, pursued by a yearning young man obsessed by he noion of romanic ideals.. The archeypal princess figure 1s one ha has long figured in lieraure, been idealized in ballads, and sho hrough soffocus lenses in he movies. Bu wha separaes he princess, o whom we ascribe hese a ~ribues, from 'normal' people is maccessabiliy. I guess old adages like 'you always wan ~ha you cant fiave," 'he grass IS always greener...' would apply here. Every culure seems o have idealized some s-or of female diey; I suppose his expresses a need for an image o look up o, combined wih hose qualiies we sereoypically associae wih he noion of womanhood: sof ~rm h nururing, mohering, en ~ derness, sexualiy. Now a his poin I would like o sae ha I am using he female personificaion of he p'iq..cess concepion only as an obvl<ms. example. Sereolypically male aribues SUCJJ as srengu, proeciveness, reliabiliy are jus as regularly ascribed o male dieies. Bu since I'm dealing wih a female princess in his review, I would like o limi his o a discussion of female princesses. You see, I feel we idealize our princesses, a.emp o possess hem in our dreams. perhaps pursue hem in realiy, because our percepion of hem is based on he noion of unfulfilled yearning. Like Circe, or any oher unaainable beauy long celebraed in he ars, he princess sends ou signals encouraging our aenion. Princesses are oo self-involved o give much energy o he clarificaion of hese signals, and have probably learned from he ime hey were five ha i is, in fac, more advanageous o send sof, unfocused signals because such signals are proecive. They proec agains a clear, flrm commimen or promise, while encouraging, if no insuring, he coninued ineres and aenion besowed. These fuzzy signals, so open o individual inerpreaion, arac he greaes possible number of admirers precisely because his vaguenesss Cor subley?) leaves us ample room Associaion. The Naional Bar Associaion seems o be an organizaion ha is ruly dedicaed o is profession and he benefi of he sociey. The Naional Bar is having a hard ime and is in a sruggle for minoriy righs bu slowly hey are making foo seps and he firs foo sep is usually he hardes. The secre of heir success I believe, will be in changing he publics view by re. educaion. One of he big p~oblems is on is way o being solved. This problem is he _idea of esing people o be admied o a Jaw school. This is unfair because he values of he Black rvan are somewha differen and heir ideas are no exacly he ~me. However, I find he Black person jus as inelligen bu he language is differen. Le us begin o realize more and more erch day ha people are people and hen we will be on our way o realizing a fundamenal ruh. o "fill in he blanks," leaves us free o yearn no only for he somewha disan, unaainable princess, bu for all hose unme needs, hose unfulfilled desires someimes daing from our long disan pas. ln shor, we are free o projec our unfulfilled longings on his amorphous dream-creaure, who, on he one hand, glories in he resulan aenion, bu migh also feel he lack of a clearly-focused personaliy on which o fall back, or, if a clarified personaliy exiss, migh regre he secrecy of i lrom he world a large, from hose who love a dream, heir dream, and no he real person on whom his dream-image is projeced; from hose who, resulanly, have difficuly apprehending and acceping ha rea I personaliy whose proecive need for disanced adoraion is ulimaely, only a par of ha personaliy. On many occasions I have fel ha he princess, ha pseudo-diey o whom we look for need fulfillmen, fulfills no one's needs, no even, or, should I say, especially, her own. Now his is a very sad sae of affail;s. The princess, wih her easing signals of 'come hiher' (bu no oo close) can find herself caugh in a rap. 'Love me, he real me,' is a yearning we probably all have. Bu many of he princesses I have known do no know wha 'he real me' of heir personaliy is. Consequenly, hey are no easily in ouch wih heir core needs, conflics, feelings. Wha hey are aware of, painfully aware of, is a vague empiness, a sense of roleplaying, game-playing, o he poin of arificialiy. Reslessness. roolessness, romanic noions from he pages of True Love comics-all hese are characerisic of he prin- cess, ha princess who, a he core, yearns deeply for commied relaionships as a real person, wih a real person, ye is oo deeply frighened Dr hreaened o hrow aside he safey afforded by being a princess o ake any real risp. Wha becomes of he princess? Afer a period of 'falling in love, yes, real love,' a nagging, gnawing sense of dissaisfacion, disappoinmen, discouragemen, perhaps even despair, ses in. This is undersandable when you realize how difficul i is for a princess o cope wih he waning of romanic love,. on he dependence of only one person o graify her ego:of'len'ce'u needs. Soon he rememberance of he difficuly in befng a dream-objec o many fades.. Wha is lef is he memory of 'he good old days,' hose days of being a reigning love-goddess, a sor of supreme being. Memories of he responsibiliies ha go wih siing on such a pedesal are quickly fuzzed over and obscured hrough ha rosy mis of memory. And hen wha happens? Ladies and genlemen, have you ever gone o a wedding? And a ha wedding, have you ever seen an overweigh woman beween fdy and deah, a woman sending ou signals so srongly, Delegaes onba convenion mixing so desperaely, i embarrassed you? And was his woman overwiggling her hips - when she danced? And did she drop innuendos wih every senence she spoke? And was her husband ha shy, balding lile chap who sa quiely, apologeicllly in he corner, embarrassed a his wife's gross fliraiousness and grossness in general? Tha was an overage, overweigh slighly gone-o-seed princess in ermilnal sages of reslessness. disappoinmen and discouragemen. She never grew up. Tha's sad. Her husband ries o calm her down, sober her up, ge her home. She eases him,. laughs a him, makes fun of him, and, evenually, screams a him. The princess has urned ino a frusraed, raging bich. So-is "The Fanasicks" a 'happy play wih a happy ending? No, I don' hink so. I may be reading oo much ino i, aking i oo 1 serious ly, bu I hink a characer of Luisa's superprincess emperamen. is no a girl o wind up wih in a happy ending. All his business abou young love mauring doesn' quie come off when you have a characer like Luisa involved. Frankly, I hink he young man in he play would have been beer off o have sarved in his rags on he road... latjid's llill --~ ~IO.C~.~*'.IG Mo-. IlL. 561i-2105 HOURS: 10 AMJyOa ~ Clos~ Wadne$day... Bonnie Tillman I need approval Doug Piller In reading he book, UndeFSandlng Oher People, by Suar Palmer, I realized a fundamenal ruh. I always fel hey did no wan me and ha I was no cared for. I wan o be liked and acceped by oher people and I ry o gain peoples' approval. The major problem I bad was I did no like myself and looked for a new and oher personaliy. I used o preend ha I was in a movie role and ake he personaliy from a movie.
