Music Program 2018-19 Department of Visual and Performing Arts Audition and Admission Information Thank you for your interest in studying music at UCCS. The undergraduate music degrees at UCCS are focused and integrative. We offer two Music Major Tracks in the BA in Visual and Performing Arts: Composition & Sound Design and Creative Music Performance and Technology. We also offer a Bachelor of Innovation in VAPA - Music, a one-of-a-kind unique degree that integrates music skills, artistic development and audio technology with Business and Engineering in a partnership with the College of Business and the College of Engineering. Please fill out the information below. If you are applying for the VAPA BA in Music, you must audition to be admitted to the program. You will be contacted by the Music Program Director, Dr. Colin McAllister, to set up an audition day and time. Links should be accessible by direct link (e.g., no further registration or passwords required), through domains such as YouTube or Vimeo or any other one click web link. Please attach an artistic resume and include your personal contact information with the email that contains your link. Audition Information Auditions will be held in the Ent Center for the Arts. The address of the building is 5225 North Nevada Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO 80918. A map of the campus may be found at: http://www.uccs.edu/~map. Parking is free on Saturdays. You must contact the Music Program Director, Dr. Colin McAllister, to set up an audition time by email at cmcallis@uccs.edu or by phone: (719)255-5134. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your audition time. Practice/warm-up rooms will be available. We are unable to provide accompanists for the auditions. Each prospective student should make arrangements to provide their own if necessary, or bring an audio recording. Audition Requirements: The purpose of the audition should be for each student to demonstrate his or her technique, creativity and musicality, and stylistic interest(s). Prospective students should prepare three selections of contrasting styles/periods that they feel best represent themselves as musicians. Skills (scales, arpeggios, sight reading) may also be part of the audition process. In addition, the music faculty will want to discuss musical and career goals with each student. More specific information on each instrument may be found below. FLUTE/WOODWIND Two contrasting works (or single movements taken from full-length works), representing two different styles and/or periods (accompanied or unaccompanied) Two orchestral or chamber ensemble excerpts displaying a balance of technical and lyrical playing (unaccompanied) One etude Scales: prepare two different Major/minor scales in a variety of articulations, tempos and rhythms

Optional: prepare to show and/or play an original composition or improvisation Applicants are encourages to take a free trial mini-lesson with Prof. Rigler prior to auditioning Memorization is encouraged BRASS Classical prepare three solo pieces, etudes or movements from concertos from different periods, one must be 20 th century Jazz three jazz standards from different styles (prepare one with chorus solos). Applicants should choose tunes that demonstrate their best abilities and knowledge. Applicants may audition in classical, jazz or both. If auditioning for both styles, only two pieces from each are required. STRINGS Two contrasting works (or single movements taken from full-length works), representing two different styles and/or periods (accompanied or unaccompanied) Two orchestral or chamber ensemble excerpts displaying a balance of technical and lyrical playing (unaccompanied) One etude Scales: prepare two different Major/minor scales in a variety of articulations, tempos and rhythms Optional: prepare to show and/or play an original composition or improvisation GUITAR Our unique, broad-based guitar program emphasizes rigor and excellence in a range of styles. Some of our students elect to focus on a particular style (classical, jazz) while others explore a range of options. Possible options for audition pieces could include: Classical a classical etude (Sor, Carcassi, Giuliani, Legani) a prelude or dance by Johann Sebastian Bach a Renaissance piece by Sanz, Dowland, Milán or Visée works by Tárrega, Villa-Lobos, Barrios, Ponce a contemporary work (Brouwer, Smith-Brindle, Dyens, Domeniconi)

Jazz be prepared to play the melody, comp the chords, and improvise over pieces of various styles, e.g. 12-bar Blues: Blues Walk, All Blues, Now s the Time, Straight No Chaser Medium Swing: Autumn Leaves, Days of Wine and Roses Jazz Waltz: Someday My Prince Will Come, My Favorite Things, Emily Bebop: Oleo, Ornithology, Confirmation Latin: Blue Bossa, Black Orpheus, Desafinado, St. Thomas An original work in a solo (i.e. chord melody) style PIANO Two octave scales and arpeggios in all major and minor keys Three pieces selected from the following: A prelude or dance movement by Johann Sebastian Bach A movement from a Classical sonata A Romantic selection (e.g. Chopin, Brahms, Schumann) A modern composition (e.g. Bartok, Prokofiev, Schoenberg) An improvisation over a standard jazz tune VOICE Three contrasting songs. One of them should be in English and one preferably in a foreign language. At least one song must be from the classical repertoire. If you have never sung classical vocal music and are unfamiliar with the repertoire, we suggest you choose a song from the collection Twenty-four Italians Songs and Arias, which is widely available for various voice types. A third selection should be drawn from musical theatre, jazz or popular music. A brief pitch-matching exercise COMPOSITION Composers of any kind may demonstrate their creative work, for examples songwriters of any and all styles, laptop composition, DJ s, hip hop, folk or techno musicians, etc. Please bring audio or video recordings (including links) of your original work and/or scores.
