Monthly Steward Florence Micoud A local since 2005 My favourite place is Ironside Hill, and the lake side. My favourite activities are walking, gardening, caring, working, reading, skiing, non-motorised water sports, etc. Involved in Plastic Bag Free Wanaka, Wanaka Wastebusters, Wanaka Timebank, Mount Aspiring College, ALREC, Wanakapella EC: What does stewardship mean to you? Stewardship is caring for the place and the people, thereby living by my own values. I believe we can regenerate our planet and save humanity if we all do our bit. I am doing my bit in my own life and by sharing knowledge and skills to help us all do our bit. This is how I practice my Stewardship for the Earth. EC: What happened in your life to make you become a steward for the environment? In July 1977, my parents took me to Malville anti-nuclear protest. It was huge! Superphenix is a super reactor, with doubtful safety records. Many protestants were injured. That s when I realised we need to act as citizens because the system (however I perceived it at 10) doesn t care about the environment and the people. EC: Tell us about your journey Growing up in the countryside, I learnt about nature and gardening and have always be connected to the Earth and its living hosts. I wrote my Masters of Economics dissertation on relations between capitalism and the environment, the same year as Paul Hawken published the Ecology of Commerce, much unknowingly to me. After my information management studies, I was lucky to work for 7 seven years as librarian for the French leading practical ecology magazine Les Quatre Saisons du Jardinage in their new eco-centre Terre Vivante. They were very formative years. After moving to New Zealand, partly because I knew too much about nuclear power stations condition, I got involved in many local initiatives then enrolled in the Sustainable Practice course that Steven Henry set up here in Wanaka several years ago. It gave me foundations and status to help my community implement sustainability, like this Earth Collective initiative. EC: What was difficult? In my young rebel years, I tried to convince people and was rowing against the flow. This was exhausting and fruitless. With maturity, I ve realised I can only offer this huge amount of knowledge around sustainability solutions and facilitate their adoption by people who want to as well as use the tools and systems society provides (eg. Social enterprise) to make progress in a direction where both people and the planet thrive. EC: What are your accomplishments as a steward? Living simply, aware of our impact, chemical free, with as less stuff as possible, is a daily humble accomplishment that makes a huge difference. My biggest accomplishment I think is the Climate March I organised here in Wanaka in November 2016. It was a great success locally and globally and contributed to strong commitments by governments during the COP21 in Paris. EC: Why is it important to become a steward? This comes from 350.org: If not us, who? If not now, when? If not here, where? Simple. EC: What do you want to share with our community about becoming steward? Well, it does require change, but change is exciting. It s easy, it feels good and it s fun! EC: What tips do you offer about becoming steward? Ask questions: Do I need it? How is it made? Where does it go? etc. Go to earthcollectivenz.org to send us your stewardship story. Earth Collective Magazine August 2018 6

Monthly Featurette MAC Team Green: A small group making a big difference. Written by Chris, MAC Team Green student. The magic of transforming waste into trees At the start of the year, we checked that all recycling bins were in place and labelled. Then we made an enticing presentation in assembly to encourage everyone to pick up litter and recycle. The caretakers have noticed an improvement in recycling bins content and a reduction in litter, so well done everyone! As shown in the term 3 Team Green quiz, 91% of people know how the recycling system works so we can continue keep MAC beautiful and tidy. Thanks to our recycling efforts, we earn trees to plant through the paper4trees scheme, sponsored by Ziptrek. Ten senior students came to plant 16 trees during Teem Green Focus week on a splendid spring day. Fair Trade As MAC is a fair trade school since October 2016, we have continued fair trade education and bake sales and we ensure fair trade products are available in the staff room and canteen. These activities have raised nearly a $1000 this year. Energy saving We have organized monthly Earth Hours and have promoted energy savings. Our solar panels have produced 3000 kw, which further saves on the electricity bill. With these savings and funds gathered, the Board of Trustees has approved further solar panels to be installed. All these actions are positive and creating positive feedback loops. We love win-wins! Other activities This year, Mac Team Green students attended a Festival of Colour event, which we enjoyed very much. We have started working with the Lake Water Quality Touchstone project, taking samples of water at the Brebner Bay outlet. We also started measuring the air quality around the coal boiler. We will continue to explore and learn more in order to suggest alternatives to this polluting fossil fuel practice. Go to earthcollectivenz.org to write a featurette about a local group who acts in Stewardship for the Earth. Earth Collective Magazine August 2018 18

Monthly Kaitiatikanga Kaitiakitanga means guardianship and protection. It is a way of managing the environment, based on the Māori world view. Traditionally, Māori believe there is a deep kinship between humans and the natural world. All life is connected. People are not superior to the natural order; they are part of it. Like some other indigenous cultures, Māori see humans as part of the web or fabric of life. To understand the world, one must understand the relationships between different parts of the web. Kaitiakitanga is a vehicle for rediscovering and applying these ideas. A kaitiaki is a guardian. This can be a person or group that cares for an area such as a lake or forest. They are given that role by the local tribe. A kaitiaki is a person or group that is recognised as a guardian by the tangata whenua (tribal group with authority in a particular area). For instance, a hapū (sub-tribe) may be the kaitiaki for a lake or a forest. Interest in kaitiakitanga is growing today. Tribal groups are working to respond to environmental problems, and to renew their own knowledge, culture and experience. In the Māori world view, people are closely connected to the land and nature. Kaitiakitanga is based on this idea of humans as part of the natural world. In the past, people followed traditional practices when they were hunting, fishing, growing or finding food. These helped them to care for the environment. They included temporary bans (rāhui) on taking food from an area, using the lunar calendar (maramataka) to decide when to plant and harvest, taking only what was needed, hunting and fishing only for food, not as sport, using bird snares at the right time for example, not when the birds were breeding. Today there is growing interest in kaitiakitanga. Tribes are restoring their environment and culture, and using traditional ideas in the modern world. For example, The Ngāi Tahu tribe are guardians of pounamu (greenstone) in the South Island. Kaitiakitanga today expresses traditional ideas in a time of cultural and environmental renewal. Iwi (tribes) are seeking to restore ecosystems and culture at the same time. Kaitiakitanga theory and practice responds to a number of current issues and challenges. Kaitiakitanga has also been included in some laws, such as the Resource Management Act 1991. Published with Permission from Te Ahukaramū Charles Royal, 'Kaitiakitanga guardianship and conservation', Te Ara - the Encyclopedia of New Zealand, http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/kaitiakitanga-guardianship-andconservation (accessed 22 October 2017) Story by Te Ahukaramū Charles Royal, published 24 Sep 2007" Earth Collective Aotearoa is not kaitiaki but our perception of stewardship is deeply similar to maori view. We do not own the environment, we are granted its benefits for free and we need to respect and take care of it, for itself and so that future generations can enjoy it too. Maori tikanga is intertwined with embracing an environmentally respectful lifestyle. Monthly Steward Tips In the garden Make a cheap greenhouse to raise your seeds with strawbales! Arrange a square of strawbales around your seed trays and cover with an old window. For better effect, add a piece of dark material under the seed trays. In the Kitchen To save energy: Fill your kettle with the amount of water you need; Put a lid when cooking considerably reduce cooking times; Switch off the ring or gas burner when it s boiling or 5mn before the end of cooking. It continues to cook itself! At home Reuse your vacuum cleaner bags, by simply pulling all the content and putting it back again. You can put the dust and hair into the compost. At work Get fair-trade coffee, tea and sugar for the staff room. Farmer will get a fair price on their produce so your break will have an added feel-good factor. When shopping Remember to bring your own bags. Store them in the car so you always have one. And if you forget, buy a new reusable bag or ask for boxes at the counter.
