Peter Meechan Fragile Oasis or Wind Orchestra 201/14 Programme Note Fragile Oasis is the name o a collective who describe themselves as a grass-roots articiatory initiative that connects the shared ersective o astronauts rom dierent countries and cultures with eole on Earth, encouraging all to work together so that our lanet is not only visibly beautiul, but beautiul or all. Many involved in the roject are astronauts on the International Sace Station (I.S.S.), who ost, on their website (htt://www.ragileoasis.org) many dierent details o their exeriments, hotos rom sace, and some incredible video ootage o our Earth. One such time lase video (a video made u many still images) was osted on their website by astronaut Ron Garan (htt://www.ragileoasis.org/blog/2011/11/coming-back-down-to-our-ragile-oasis-2/) in 2011. It is made u o images taken rom the I.S.S. o what Garan described as a coule o las around our Fragile Oasis beore coming back down [to Earth] and eatures all kinds o amazing views rom sace. Each o the ive sections o this work relate to an asect o the video either something literal or something more metahorical. The oening section, i: The lights rom Above, is a musical descrition o the view o the Aurora Australis rom above the lights. The second section, ii: The Storm rom Above (art i), is also a musical ortrayal o ortions o the video cli in this case the many lightning storms we see rom above. The storms that are so owerul on Earth aear as small bolts o electricity dancing through the clouds. The third section, iii: Freya, has its roots in ersonal amily tragedy. The name Freya derives rom a Norse goddess who was associated with both beauty and love, and in this central section I wanted to write music that not only acknowledged how ragile lie itsel is, but that every day o it counts and should be celebrated. iv: The Storm rom Above (art ii) is a again a reerence to the lightning storms, but also to the huge hurricanes we see in the video. It leads us to the inal section, v: The Oasis rom Above a descrition o the size and grandeur o Earth, our Fragile Oasis. Fragile Oasis is dedicated to Natalie Youson, in riendshi.
