Page 1 Functional Description The High Performance Spliceable (Gold Plus) feeder advances components from a Reel Holder to the Peel Edge on the Window where the Mylar (cover) tape is removed. The components are then advanced to the feeder pick-up position where they wait for pickup by the machine. Procedures and Adjustments The subsections that follow contain the procedures required for proper feeder operation. Theory of Operation / Sequence of Events Power is supplied to the feeder from the feeder interface by means of the Pogo Block's two (2) bottom pins. At power-up, the feeder's Controller Card activates the Control Panel which is verified by the illumination of the LED / status light. In this ready mode, the feeder stands idle waiting for a signal from the placement machine to advance. The signal is transported through the top two (2) pins of the Pogo Block. After the signal is sent by the placement machine, the feeder indexes with the following operational sequences: The feeder's Drive Motor is activated for component tape advancement. The Drive Motor engages a series of gears that advance the component tape as well as peeling the mylar cover tape. The Slot Sensor, in combination with the Toothplate, ensures proper tape index and positioning. The feeder's carrier tape and cover tape Drive Motor shut off. The feeder signals the placement machine that the feeder index is complete. The feeder waits for the next index signal after a component has been picked. CAUTION When powering up the feeder, make sure the startup sequence is complete before pressing any Control Panel Buttons. The startup sequence is complete when the Status Light illuminates GREEN and the Control Panel Display is blank. CAUTION Use a Hover-Davis Feeder Set-Up Cart for your feeder. Using a non Hover-Davis Feeder Set-Up cart may void the warranty and/or damage the feeder.

RED FLASH = Cover tape error, or carrier tape jam. GREEN FLASH = Feeder is powering up. GREEN = Feeder is ready. ORANGE = Operator Mode menu and Technician Mode menu. ORANGE FLASH = Control Panel serial communications error. During normal operation the display will show the current feeder pitch. If an error has occurred, the following error codes will be displayed: J = Carrier tape jam (Red flashing Status Light). ce = Cover tape error (Red flashing Status Light). SE = Communication lost between Control Panel and Controller (ORANGE flashing Status Light). See pages 24 through 28 for display functionality during Operator Modes. Multi-purpose button used for various operations. Used to advance the tape equal to the set pitch. If held down for more than 2 seconds, the feeder will rapid advance the carrier tape until the button is released. If the Mode Button is also being held down when pressing and releasing the Forward Button, then the advance feed is 2mm if the feeder is set to 2 pitch, or the advance feed will be 4mm if the feeder is set to any other pitch. Multi-purpose button used for various operations and recovery. Used to initialize feeder and remove cover tape slack. Multi-purpose button used for various operations. Used to reverse feed the tape equal to the set pitch. If the Mode Button is also being held down when pressing and releasing the Reverse Button, then the reverse feed is 2mm if the feeder is set to 2 pitch, or the reverse feed will be 4mm if the feeder is set to any other pitch. The High Performance (Gold Plus) Spliceable tape feeder is equipped with a power save feature that will turn off the Display 5 seconds after the last button pressed. If after the feeder is first powered up and no buttons have been pressed within the first 5 seconds, the feeder will immediately go into power save mode. Power save mode does not effect the operation of the feeder in any way. It just conserves power going to the Display. The Status Light will be lit indicating that the feeder is powered up.

Page 3 Adjusting the Pitch Setting / Ready Status To adjust the pitch setting while the feeder is in Ready status (feeder loaded), follow the sequence of steps below. 1. Power feeder up on machine or Feeder Set-Up Cart and latch feeder in place. After the feeder has completed its startup sequence, the Status Light will illuminate GREEN and the Control Panel Display will be blank. 2. Press and hold down the Mode Button for 3 seconds until the Status Light illuminates ORANGE and the Control Panel display begins flashing the current pitch setting, then release the Mode Button. 3. Press the Forward Button to increase the pitch setting. Press the Reverse Button to decrease the pitch setting. 4. Press and release the Mode Button to save the setting and exit. The Status Light will illuminate GREEN and the Control Panel Display will display the current pitch setting. Adjusting the Pitch Setting / ce Error Present To adjust the pitch setting while the feeder is displaying a ce error, follow the sequence of steps below. 1. Push and hold the Peel Arm Assembly forward while pressing and releasing the Mode Button. The ce error message will be cleared from the display while the Status Light illuminates GREEN. 2. Continue holding the Peel Arm Assembly forward and press the Mode Button for 3 seconds until the Status Light illuminates ORANGE and the Control Panel display begins flashing the current pitch setting, then release the Mode Button. 3. Press the Forward Button to increase the pitch setting. Press the Reverse Button to decrease the pitch setting. 4. Press and release the Mode Button to save the setting and exit. The Status Light will illuminate GREEN and the Control Panel Display will display the current pitch setting. The High Performance (Gold Plus) Spliceable Tape Feeder must be powered up to adjust the pitch setting. Page 4 Tape Deck Insert Application for Punched (Paper/Plastic) Carrier Tape (8mm only) The Punched (paper/plastic) Deck Insert is used when presenting components from all (paper/plastic) punched carrier tapes. Page 5 Tape Deck Insert Application for Embossed Carrier Tape (8mm only) The Embossed Deck Insert is used when presenting embossed carrier tapes that have a pocket depth equal to or less than 0.045 / 1.15mm. Embossed carrier tape cover tape Do not use the Embossed Deck Insert when presenting embossed carrier tapes that have a pocket depth greater than 0.045 / 1.15mm. 1.15mm / 0.045 Embossed carrier tape

Page 6 Tape Deck Insert Application for Embossed Carrier Tape (continued) There is a Hold Down Magnet on the bottom of the Embossed Deck Insert that secures the Insert to the Tape Deck during the production run. The Embossed Deck Insert can be identified by it s gold color. Page 7 Tape Deck Insert Storage (8mm only) The 8mm High Performance (Gold Plus) Spliceable Tape Feeder is shipped from the factory with the punched (paper/plastic) decks installed. One (1) Punched (paper/plastic) Deck Insert, and one (1) Embossed Deck Insert are stored beneath the Window Latch Lever and Tape Window as shown below. Punched (Paper/Plastic) Deck Insert Embossed Deck Insert Removing Tape Deck Inserts From the Storage Area (8mm only) The Tape Deck Insert storage area is located in the Tape Guide beneath the Tape Window. To remove or change the Tape Deck Inserts, slide the pointed end of the Tape Deck Removal Tool beneath the front edge of either Tape Deck Insert and lift to remove from the storage area. Page 8 Changing the Tape Deck Insert for Punched (Paper/Plastic) or Embossed Carrier Tape (8mm only) To install an embossed or punched (paper/plastic) Tape Deck Insert, follow the sequence of steps below. 1. Open the Window Latch Lever and Tape Window. See page 13. 2. Inspect the feeder for any loose components prior to installing Tape Deck Inserts. 3. Using the magnetic end of the Tape Deck Removal Tool to hold the Tape Deck Insert, lower the insert into the Tape Deck and slide until it drops into position. Do not install the Tape Deck Inserts when feeding embossed component tape with a depth greater than 0.045 inch / 1.15mm. Page 9 Removing Tape Deck Insert From the Tape Deck (8mm only) To remove an embossed or punched (paper/plastic) Tape Deck Insert, follow the sequence of steps below. 1. Open the Window Latch Lever and Tape Window. See page 13. 2. Inspect the feeder for any loose components prior to removing Tape Deck Inserts. 3. To remove a Tape Deck Insert, use the pointed end of the Deck Removal Tool to lift it away from the Tape Deck. Tape Deck Removal Tool Deck Insert 4. Using the magnetic end of the Deck Removal Tool, lift the Deck Insert and remove it from the Tape Deck as shown below. 5. Store the Tape Deck Insert in the Deck Insert storage area. Page 10 Setting Tail Positions To change tape reels without removing the feeder from the pick and place machine, follow the sequence of steps below. 1. Pull out on the Tail Lock to disengage the locking tab mechanism. 2. With the Tail Lock disengaged, rotate the tail section up into the loading / unloading or splicing position. 3. Release the Tail Lock to lock the tail section into the desired position. 4. Perform these steps in reverse to set the feeder in the normal, operating position. Page 11 Loading the Carrier Tape Reel To load carrier tape reels follow the sequence of steps below. 1. Set the Reel Pin location by removing the M04 x 08 socket flat head screw on the back of the tail assembly. Refer to the Reel Pin Locations diagram below to match the tape reel with the corresponding Reel Pin location. 2. Place the tape reel over the Reel Pin so that the carrier tape feeds over the top of the reel towards the front of the feeder. The Reel Pin location must match the corresponding hole in Tail Section based on tape reel size. If the Reel Pin is not set to the correct location, there could be picking or jamming issues, or problems with PSV detection. Page 12 Loading the Carrier Tape Reel (continued) 3. Move the Tail Section, with loaded reel to the normal operating position. (See page 10, Setting Tail Positions ). 4. Pull the tape from the reel and thread the component tape under the Latch Lever and into the channel under the Control Panel. 5. Continue feeding the tape until it reaches the Tape Window. Page 13 Unlocking and Opening the Tape Window To Unlock and open the Tape Window, follow the sequence of steps below. 1. Slide the Window Lock forward to unlock, this will allow the Window Latch Lever to be opened. 2. Lift the Window Latch Lever approximately 90 degrees, then slide the Window Lock forward to lock into the Lever Catch to lock it in the open position. 3. The Tape Window can now be opened and closed. Page 14 Loading Tape into the Tape Window CAUTION When loading component tape, especially 0603 and smaller devices, extreme care must be taken to make sure that loose components do not drop into the feeder drive mechanism. These small devices can lodge in the gear teeth causing drive failure. When loading component tape into the Tape Window area, follow the sequence of steps below. 1. Open the Tape Window and feed the component tape inside the Tape Guide channel. 2. Make sure that the component pockets fit into the Tape Guide channel. Page 15 Loading Tape into the Tape Window (continued ) CAUTION When loading component tape, especially 0603 and smaller devices, extreme care must be taken to make sure that loose components do not drop into the feeder drive mechanism. These small devices can lodge in the gear teeth causing drive failure. 3. Continue feeding the component tape into the exit chute at the front end of the feeder while peeling back the cover tape. 4. Align the sprocket holes of the component tape with the Toothplate. 5. Peel back approximately 15 inches (381mm) of cover tape and thread the cover tape backwards through the Tape Window. A mylar cover tape extension may be used if 15 (381mm) of cover tape is not available. Make sure there are no twists or knots in the cover tape, and/or mylar cover tape extension, if used. Page 16 Threading the Peel Arm When threading the cover tape over the Peel Arm, follow the sequence of steps below. 1. Pull back on the Peel Arm Assembly, and hold it open. 2. Thread the cover tape between the Peel Arm Assembly and the Peel Roller. 3. Loop the cover tape under the Peel Roller, then let the Peel Arm Assembly close. 4. Pull the cover tape taught over the Peel Edge after closing the Tape Window. Make sure there are no twists or knots in the cover tape, and/or mylar cover tape extension, if used. Page 17 Closing and Locking the Tape Window When closing and locking the Tape Window, follow the sequence of steps below. 1. While holding the Window Latch Lever, slide the Window Lock forward to unlock the Window Latch Lever. 2. Lower the Window Latch Lever onto the closed Tape Window. 3. Slide the Window Lock back to the locked position. It is important to align the component tape sprocket holes with the Toothplate. See page 14, Loading tape into the Tape Window. Page 18 Threading Cover Tape into the Reservoir To thread cover tape into the Reservoir area, follow the sequence of steps below. 1. Raise the Handle. 2. Press down on the Tab and pull open the Reservoir Cover. 3. Press down on the Idler Wheel Lever until the Idler Wheel latches in the upright position. 4. Feed the cover tape end between the Idler Wheel and Drive Roller. 5. Load the cover tape into Reservoir. 6. Press down on the Idler Wheel Release to close the Idler Wheel Lever. 7. Close the Reservoir Cover. 8. Press and release the Mode Button to remove any cover tape slack. (The feeder must be powered for this step). Page 19 Final Tape Loading Step With the tape fully loaded into the feeder, lower the tail section to the normal position. The feeder is now ready for operation. (See page 10, Setting Tail Positions ). The reel must engage the tensioner in order to activate the PSV sensor for reel presence on the pick and place machine. Page 20 Locating the First Component With the tape securely loaded into the feeder, it is recommended to power-up offline on a Hover-Davis Feeder Set-Up Cart. After the feeder has completed its startup sequence, press and release the Mode Button to remove slack in the cover tape; Status Light will display GREEN. Make sure feeder is set to the correct component pitch (See page 34 for instructions on changing feeder pitch setting). To Advance feed the tape to the Pick-Point: 1. Press and hold the Mode Button down while pressing and releasing the Forward Button on the Control Panel. This will advance the tape 2mm if the Feeder Pitch Setting is set to 2 pitch, or advance the tape 4mm if the Feeder Pitch Setting is set to 4 pitch or higher. 2. Continue pressing the Forward Button until the first component is centered at the appropriate pick point mark on the Tape Window. To Reverse feed the tape to the Pick-Point: 1. Press and hold the Mode Button down while pressing and releasing the Reverse Button on the Control Panel. Page 21 Emptying the Reservoir To ensure optimum performance, the Reservoir should periodically be emptied. It is recommended to empty the Reservoir when tape reels are loaded or spliced. When the Reservoir becomes full, the cover tape will start to push the Reservoir Door open. When this occurs, the Reservoir should be emptied as soon as possible. To empty the Reservoir, follow the sequence of steps below. 1. Swing the Reservoir Door open. 2. Pull the excess cover tape from the Reservoir, then trim away the excess with scissors. 3. Push the trimmed end of the cover tape back into the Reservoir and close the Reservoir Door. Page 22 Installing the Tape Feeder into the Platform Based Machine or Feeder Set-Up Cart To load the tape feeder onto the Platform Based Machine or Feeder Set-Up cart, push the feeder latch down so that it catches and stays down. Slide the feeder onto the Platform feeder bank, until it reaches the interface. Once the feeder Status Light illuminates, signaling an electrical connection between the feeder and the interface, push the latch down and it will spring up. This locks the feeder into its operational position. Do not press any Control Panel Buttons during the feeder power-up sequence. Follow the above instructions in reverse order to remove the feeder. Feeder startup sequence: When the feeder is loaded onto the Platform or Set-Up Cart, the Control Panel Display will show the following sequence. 1. To adjust the pick point position of the feeder in the Y axis, perform the series of steps listed below. 1. Power feeder up on machine or Feeder Set-Up Cart and latch feeder in place. Wait for the feeder to complete its startup sequence before proceeding, the Status Light will illuminate GREEN and the Control Panel Display will be blank when the startup sequence is complete. 2. Press the Forward and the Reverse buttons at the same time to reset the pick point offset to the original factory setting, which is indicated by a ORANGE Status Light. 6. Wait for the feeder to complete its startup sequence before proceeding, the Status Light will illuminate GREEN and the Control Panel Display will be blank when the startup sequence is complete. 2. When replacing parts and securing Covers, make sure all Cables are securely routed to avoid pinching and feeder damage. When moving the feeder, always use the feeder handle to avoid feeder and Pogo Block damage.
