EUROPEAN UNION Delegation of the European Union to India 27 February 2014 Press Release Tune in to the 'Voices of Youth' at the 19 th European Union Film Festival in India! 19 films, each from a different EU Member State, to be showcased in 10 cities in India! Screenings in New Delhi: 28 February 11 March 2014 Inauguration at 18:00 on Friday 28 February at the British Council 17 Kasturba Gandhi Marg New Delhi 110 001 1

As the global youth population reaches a historic high hearing the youth becomes more important than ever. When young people aren't recognized for who they are, don't have their talents and views acknowledged, they may act out or collapse inward. Or they may just give you an odd grin and carry on having the best time of their lives. Do you remember those days? In its last year of being a teenager, the 19 th European Union Film Festival in India invites you to do that through a collection of 19 award-winning movies showcasing different stories of youth and the young. It's a collection of dreams and passion, fear and frustration, fun and joy, mistakes and recognition - all things old and young for both the young and not-so-young. Brought to you by the Delegation of the European Union to India, embassies of member states of the European Union and organised with the helping hand of many local partners, the festival will travel from February until July 2014 from New Delhi to Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Goa, Jodhpur, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai and Kolkata. It will be inaugurated at 6pm on 28 February at the British Council in New Delhi, with a special screening of the British comedy "Killing Bono". Directed by Nick Hamm, based on Neil McCormick's memoir, it tells the story of two brothers who attempt to become global rock stars, but are left to only look on as their old school friends U2 become the biggest band in the world. Just as attention-grabbing are many other stories on show at the festival: In the Austrian film Breathing eighteen year-old Roman Kogler finds his path in life whilst working at a municipal morgue. The Belgian entry On The Sly tells of a little girl who feels invisible in her parents' eyes. To be sure, she decides to disappear. In the Bulgarian film Sneakers six young people head to a deserted beach in an attempt to escape from their failures. The fast-paced teen comedy Snowboarders from the Czech Republic offers a more winterly setting; whilst the German film Lessons of A Dream talks of a different sport football. Football at a preppy school in Braunschweig in 1874. Set in the early 1960s, the story in the Danish film Aching Hearts revolves around Jonas and Agnete, their friendships and families, trials and tribulations. Finland's entry Garbage Prince give a glimpse into the life of nineteen year-old Jed as he falls in love with quick-witted Lulu. In the French film Love like Poison, Anna returns from school to find her father gone and her mother distraught. In need of emotional support she grows close to Pierre. Set in early 1920s, the Greek film The Brides tells the story of young women emigrating to the United States during the Greco-Turkish War and Russia Civil War in search for a husband and a better life. Likewise, Viola and her daughter Angela - the main characters of the Hungarian film Fresh Air desire a better life. A breath of fresh air. The only documentary featured in the festival - the Irish entry Bright Vision talks about tradition: a community programme in Ireland through which young people learn to sing as their forefathers would have done. Also the Italian film Easy picks-up the subject of teaching: a man teaching a boy as he himself learns to become his father and the boy chooses to become a man. Lithuanian entry You am I tells a contemporary tale about an architect-dreamer building a futuristic house in a tree. Corruption and deceit are on the menu in Luxembourg's entry Blind Spot, with further dark events and an irreparable accident unfolding in the Dutch film Shocking Blue. In Hope is a Strange Place from Portugal, a son helps his father to rediscover his dignity in tough times, whilst in the Slovak film Love Me Or Leave Me sixteen year-old Mira struggles to forgive her mother for having married again after her father's death. The Spanish film Don't Be Afraid picks up the hard and often taboo subject of child abuse. It has been described as a strikingly deep film that finds an equisite way to approach horror without tabloidization. 2

All films will be screened in national languages of member states of the European Union, with English subtitles. Among them there are languages like Hungarian, Irish, Danish and Lithuanian - many of which the viewer may hear for the first time. Better than anything, all films portray Europe's fascinating diversity and its rich cinema tradition. Entry to the festival is free, with seating on first-come, first-served basis. The festival schedule for New Delhi is included below.
