This month I want to take you south of the border to Mexico, to share with you some insights into our neighboring country s historic pipe organ world. In many ways, it is quite different from what we are accustomed to in the United States. I recently returned from the Eleventh International Organ and Early Music Festival in the southern state of Oaxaca. The festival was organized by the Institute of Oaxacan Historic Organs (IOHIO, as it is known by its Spanish acronym, pronounced YOYO ). This organization, under the leadership of Cicely Winter, has registered more than seventy historic pipe organs throughout the state of Oaxaca. Almost none of these organs was in working order when discovered by IOHIO, and most of the pipes are missing or mangled in many of them. To date nine of them have been restored to playable condition. During the course of the six-day festival, we had the opportunity to visit 20 of these historic pipe organs. Some are in quite remarkable settings small villages of declining populations, with beautifully built historic churches. In almost all cases, we had the opportunity for close examination of the remains of once beautiful instruments. Where the organs have been restored, we were treated to concerts, some played by worldrenowned performers, and some played by the professional organists among the attendees. One of the many remarkable features of this festival was the participation of young people. Out of approximately 100 participants in the festival, at least 10 were students and young adults from the city of Oaxaca and neighboring villages who had scholarship help from IOHIO in order to attend. The camaraderie among these students, as well as their talent, was truly inspiring. The historic pipe organs in Oaxaca grew out of the Iberian baroque tradition, and therefore have some unique and consistent characteristics. Among the characteristics are a single divided 45-note keyboard (between middle c and c#), short octave at the lower end (appearing chromatic from low E, but in fact diatonic until low B-flat), no pedals, meantone temperament, raucous-sounding horizontal trumpets, highly decorated pipes and cases, and hips on the sides of the case. These hips are unique to Oaxacan organs, and for all we know, serve no practical use in the design of the organ. It was an absolute thrill to experience these instruments with fellow musicians and music lovers from various parts of the world. All of us were treated not only to historic pipe organ exploration, but to beautiful Mexican landscapes and local cultural traditions. I found this experience, my second organ festival in Oaxaca, a gratifying way to broaden my horizons. It forced me to explore a wealth of fascinating organ repertoire that I wouldn t normally think to incorporate in my professional setting. But the most significant thing I brought home with me was an appreciation for the passion of the IOHIO leadership, organ restorers, and small but growing number of local organists. These people have persisted against many hurdles to resurrect an art that has been all but lost. According to AGO s mission statement education is one of the guild's main goals. The initiative for this grew out of perceived needs of our members for guidance and instruction, as witnessed in my session on Improvisation at our most recent January JumpStart. The Education Committee is charged with evaluating the educational needs of Chapter members, and advancing the interest in the pipe organ to younger players, as well as supporting those who currently play the organ in our Chapter. Among the ideas already percolating for this committee are establishment of ongoing opportunities for Chapter members to study repertoire, both basic and challenging; opportunities for members to study service playing, advanced hymn playing, and improvisational techniques; offering a Pedals, Pipes and Pizza; and hosting a Pipe Organ Encounter. Joining me on this committee at this point are Jeffrey Brillhart, Alan Morrison, Marcia Sommers, and David Furniss. CHAPLAIN S CORNER 5 Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act. Dietrich Bonhoeffer O ur news is filled with people vying for being the top leader in our country. What is it we look for in a leader? Do we look for a leader who builds people up or tears people down? Healthy leadership is not about inflated egos, but healthy egos. As soon as we think we are better than another we begin to lose the opportunity to learn from another. I believe at some point in our lives we are called to be leaders. God gives us the gifts to lead when we are called to be leaders. As musicians we are called to encourage people to make music. In order to do this, we are called to support people to bring out the best in them. This is where we become psychologists and learn how to motivate the people we work with. Healthy leaders are also teachers. How we do things, how we treat others is what we teach people. In my work with the intellectually disabled we use what we call positive supports. In other words, we use positive language. When we create a positive environment in which to work, people are more apt to listen to you and hopefully watch you, and listen to each other. There is so much negativity in our world today, as leaders we are called to create a positive accepting environment. It is when we build people up in a healthy manner that they can produce their best. As a result, people are brought together in mind, heart and spirit to make music. Music is a place where we can transcend discrimination and hatred. I ve seen the above quote on Facebook a number of times in the last couple of weeks. Do we see people affirmed and working together? Do we see unity in diversity? I believe we have healthy leadership in our chapter. It is our responsibility to support this leadership. It is important for us to examine what kind of leaders we are in in the places we serve. Silence in music can make a dramatic point. Silence in our work with people makes a statement either of negativity or maybe apathy or maybe even fear. We are called to speak the truth in love. We are called to promote music in a positive, healthy manner that people will be brought together in a world where we hear so much negativity and tearing down of others. As we enter into the season of Spring and new life, may we continue to assist people in finding what is healthy in our world through the music we make. Organ Concerto Concert Continued from p. 1 6 Graduate organ students from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, will provide an unusual opportunity to hear three organ concerti in a single concert program. Featuring Saint Paul s landmark Aeolian-Skinner organ and accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, the program includes organworks by three composers, spanning almost 200 years. The G major organ concerto (1755) of C.P.E. Bach, Josef Rheinberger s 1894 organ concerto in g minor, and Francis Poulenc s concerto in g minor for organ, timpani, and strings (1938), offer between them a span of music in this genre from the classical, baroque and modern periods. The concert is jointly sponsored by Music at Saint Paul s and the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. It is a benefit performance for the Ann Stookey Fund for Music at Saint Paul s, established in 2012 to provide for the maintenance and renovation of the organ. 10 NEWS FROM NATIONAL WILMA JENSEN TO BE HONORED NEW YORK CITY The American Guild of Organists (AGO) has selected internationally acclaimed organist, church musician, and teacher WILMA JENSEN as the honoree for the 2016 AGO Endowment Fund Distinguished Artist Award Recital and Gala Benefit Reception on Friday, April 8, 2016, in Nashville, Tenn. 15 WHERE AM I? The March issue featured the organ at the Carmelite Monastery in Philadelphia (Restoration of a Hook-and-Hastings Co. organ) to be seen this summer. It was submitted by Patrick Murphy. TALE PIPES Mary Elizabeth Campbell, CAGO, Editor Crescendo@agophila.org I have been teaching elementary music classes at a home school consortium Wednesday mornings, and many of the kids are JUST a bit challenging! I came up with a strategy to try to give those who seem to really enjoy talking in class an official reason to do so. In this age of Google I ve created simple, but hopefully entertaining, Homework assignments. Some children have brought laptops in to help present their assignments. Of course my subplot is to get them excited about all things music. As we anticipate our VERY kid friendly and wonderful Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ Day coming up June 11 at the Kimmel Center, here are a few sample questions: How many pipes are there in the Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ? How long are the longest and shortest pipes? When was it built? What is so special about the Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia? When was it built? Who is the Grand Court Organist and what kinds of things does he like to play? What very famous organist/composer is said to have walked over 200 miles to hear Dietrich Buxtehude play? What is a Bourrée? Are there any organ music examples? Any classic rock examples? (Hint: Ian Anderson) What is the difference between these types of organ pipes: Bourdon and Bombarde What Philadelphian wrote O Little Town of Bethlehem? What was his inspiration? Wade in the Water is a delightful hymn that was also recorded by several groups in popular music. Can you name some? It s great fun to come up with these I highly recommend it! And the kids seem to enjoy them as well. They could also be nice additions to church bulletins perhaps one a week for the younger congregation members? Mib Campbell
