Before Reading Look at the cover. What do you predict this book is about? Why? Open to the first page. What do you think is going to happen in Krakow, Poland? What do the dates and place tell you? The book is dedicated To Jack, who survived Who do you think Jack is? 1 Who is Hitler? Where do Yanek and his family live? Who invades the town? Why? Yanek says that he would have done more if he had known what the next 6 years would be. What are some of the things you re grateful for in your own life? Who do you think us means in the last word of the chapter? 2 What type of laws are set for the Jews? What is the punishment for breaking the laws? 3 In your opinion, what type of people are the Nazis? When and why does Yanek begin to doubt his father?
