1 www.lotterycollectors.com January 2017 - Volume 30 - Issue 1 Remembering Elvis January 8, 1935 August 16, 1977 Winter Wonderland A Happy & Healthy New Year To All Lotologists & Your Families!!!

2 President s Message: January 2017 I would like to wish all our members and their families a Happy and Healthy New Year. With the New Year upon us I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the officers and those that contribute for all their hard work and dedication to the hobby this past year. Since I have taken on some additional responsibilities in the club I really appreciate all their help and support. As always I welcome your comments and suggestions to help this club sustain and grow. This club needs new members and there are potential members out there who need us, even if they do not know it yet. Talk up our hobby with anyone who seems interested. Leave some information sheets about collecting lottery tickets at any hobby shows you may attend. Also, ask if you can leave some of these information sheets at any hobby stores where you buy your supplies. If you need help in designing an information sheet I can help you with that. Just let me know. Just another reminder, remember to send any new tickets you find to our complier Ron Moermond. There are many states missing this month. Also, let us remember this old motto, Every Member Get A New Member. Also, think about becoming an internet member and save yourself and the club some expenses. Finally, the club is still in need of a new editor. If anyone has an interest in becoming our editor, please contact me for more information. It is with great sadness that I have to tell you this news from Mark Chandler. His son Chris, who was 37, passed away from complications of diabetes on December 28, 2016. Mark s e - mail and home address are listed on page 3 in this newsletter for those of you who wish to send him condolences.. Happy collecting, Steven Gilbert - President GLCS

5 Arthur s Column, Part One, by Arthur Rein, #636 As I begin this column I have been unemployed for almost three months now. It s really not as bad as it seems as I have actually turned down several job offers for a number of reasons: too far from home, no benefits, and not enough pay, just to name a few. I have gone on many interviews and I believe that I will get another job very shortly. Meanwhile, I have been using all my free time to make ticket runs, to update my lottery collection and to write a column each month. In my recent columns, I wrote about several ticket runs to the middle-atlantic areas of Delaware, Maryland, DC, Virginia and West Virginia. After traveling to these areas a couple of times, I figured I was due for a New England ticket run. Now I usually do the Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire run about three or four times a year but I hadn t done this since August so I figured the time was right. And with all the free time I had I would venture further north and head into Maine, a state that I hadn t been in for many years. Preparation is the Key to Success As I always do, I visit the lottery web sites of these states to see what is available and what I need. Since our ticket compiler, Ron Moermond, #384, hadn t gotten tickets from some of these areas in a while I knew that I would be sending him a bunch of those tickets, while also getting some for another collector. The wife, Cyrella, and I, made our way up north at the end of October. For me the high point was the two-night stay in Maine, in a town named Kittery, just over the Maine/New Hampshire border. It s an area where the nearest Maine supermarket is eight miles away. I mention this because I find that supermarkets usually have a vending machine where I can purchase the tickets in very good condition. I can t tell you have many times I walk into a store and the clerk is so relentless in ripping the tickets from its book, that they get damaged. This doesn t help my collection, and even adds to the cost when I have to buy another, better condition ticket. I eventually located this supermarket and it did have a vending machine. However, this machine was a little different than the ones I have encountered in other states. In areas like Vermont, New Hampshire, DC and Virginia, you are able to cash in winning tickets through the machine and play down the winning credits for other tickets. This lets you keep the winning tickets which can either be added to my collection or added to the collections of the others I am trying to get tickets for. The great thing about the machine in Maine was that you were able to print out a winning voucher that you could cash at any lottery retailer where you can t do this in the other states machines. At some point, you might have more winning ticket amounts than you need tickets from the machine. For instance, let s say I have $25.00 in winning amounts but I only need one $5.00 ticket to get from a machine. In the other state machines, I could either cash in the winning amounts and get more tickets that I don t need but that just wastes money since I only needed the one ticket. Or I could cash the winning ticket at any retailer but then I lose the ticket that would have gone into my collection. Or I could save the ticket for the next time I travel to the state and cash it then. While I do this in the other states since I travel to them several times a year, I haven t been to Maine in a long time and have no idea when I will go back. The great thing about this machine is that it allowed you to print out a $20.00 winning voucher that I could cash at any lottery retailer and still save the cashed winning tickets.

6 Arthur s Column, Part Two, by Arthur Rein, #636 Over the next several days Cyrella and I spent time in Maine checking out some of the sights and some of the malls. Every time I purchased tickets from other vendors I would save the winning tickets so that I could cash them out in the vending machine in that supermarket eight miles from our hotel. On the final morning of my stay in Maine I noticed that the supermarket had gotten several new games that hadn t been put into the machine yet, nor was I even aware of them. Sometimes the state lotteries will release new games while I am in their state so the information wasn t available when I went online previously. Of course, I had to buy them from the courtesy desk. The first game cost $20.00 and was called Big Money and would be GLCS ME1159. I would have to buy three of them at a cost of $60.00, Then Maine also came out with a holiday set of 4 tickets at $1.00 called, Holiday Gift and would be GLCS ME1160set. I would have to buy three sets of them at a cost of $12.00. In other words, I was going to the market to cash in a few winners and ended up spending another $72.00 that I hadn t planned. I could only hope that some of these tickets were winners. After all, what are the chances that one of the $20.00 tickets had a winner for $100.00. It s the same as buying a $1.00 ticket and having a $5.00 winner. I scratched the bar code on the first $20.00 ticket and scanned the ticket in the vending machine. Loser. Then I did the same with the other $20.00 tickets. Loser and loser. For the $1.00 tickets, I scratched the barcodes of all twelve tickets and scanned them one at a time hoping for some kind of win. To my surprise, one of the $1.00 tickets was actually a $100.00 winning ticket. Here I was hoping one of the larger cost tickets would bring me back my money but it was actually one of the smaller cost tickets that brought me back my money. Pictured below is the $100.00 winning $1.00 ticket and a copy of what one of the vouchers looked like. I actually cashed in the $100.00 winning voucher but kept a $1.00 winning voucher so that I could show you what it looked like: I ve been fortunate enough to have gone on many ticket runs in my life and I ve got countless stories to tell. If you keep reading, I ll keep writing. Happy New Year!!!!!
