Mechanical Revolution, Luo Fan, Donghua University, China 2019 COMPETITION ENTRY GUIDE E ER OUR 櫓ORLD
THERE ARE 櫓 ORLDS ONLY THE IMAGINATION CAN REACH. INSPIRING. RICH. A VE. CAPTIVATING E ER OUR 櫓 ORLD Each year designers, artists and makers from all over the globe are inspired to push themselves creatively through the ultimate design challenge, the World of WearableArt (WOW) competition. We invite designers to create the unimaginable, ignore the conventional, and defy creative expectations as they make works of art that will be brought to life on a global stage at the annual World of WearableArt Awards Show. For the audience, WOW is a feast for the eyes, where fashion, art and theatre collide. For the designers, it is an opportunity to create a work free from commercial restrictions, to see that work come to life on a stage in front of 60,000 people, to go on a creative journey with their peers and to have their talent recognised. For over three decades we have provided a unique platform for designers and artists to share and showcase their creativity and inspiration, expand horizons through global connections to other creative companies, experiment with new techniques and technologies and build on their own professional portfolios of design work. Which of our worlds will inspire you for 2019? ENTER THE WORLD OF WEARABLEART. GO ON A JOURNEY LIKE NO OTHER. WOW is a phenomenon. It inspires designers to be more creative; to be bold and brilliant. And the designers, in turn, drive WOW to be more innovative, more extensive and, generally, just more of everything. Heather Palmer, Competition Director
AOTEAROA AVANT-GARDE MYTHOLOGY 擄ELCOME TO OUR 2019 櫓ORLDS OPEN TRANSFORM 擄HITE
THE 2019 WORLDS OF WOW AOTEAROA On Reflection, Philippa Stichbury, Australia New Zealand has its own deep sense of place. Draw on that to celebrate who we are as peoples and what makes us proud. From our rich cultures and history to our landscapes, our independence to our inventions. Show us New Zealand and New Zealanders as you see us.
AVANT-GARDE A world that is experimental, radical and unorthodox; a rebellion against the norm. Dare to defy the boundaries of fashion and create a work that is cutting-edge, rejecting the ordinary and nurturing originality. In The Op, Ling Lai Kit Ling, Hong Kong Design Institute, Hong Kong, China
MYTHOLOGY Be inspired by other worlds and dimensions; explore fantastical stories of fearsome monsters and creatures, gods and goddesses, demigods and supernatural humans. Gather your inspiration from a vast treasure trove of tales. Dark and mysterious; exuberant and outlandish; ethereal and dreamy. Hylonome, Mary Wing To, United Kingdom
OPEN A world with no thematic boundaries giving you complete freedom to explore and create your own design. The only limit is your imagination. Cube, Adam McAlavey, United Kingdom
TRANSFORM Create a work that changes in form, nature and appearance. Play and innovate with different mechanisms for revealing unexpected aspects of your garment. The transformation could be playful and humourous, or it may be striking and startling. Show us an extraordinary metamorphosis. Behind Closed Doors, Kathryn Preston & Angie Robinson, New Zealand
擄 HITE Representing a spectrum of emotions, white is associated with peace, light, love, perfection, purity and spirituality. In some parts of the world, white represents death and mourning; in others it is associated with angels, good health and time. What does white conjure up in your imagination? Inspiration may be found in sheer simplicity, sculptural boldness, intricate detail or experimenting with layers, light and shadow, proportion or scale. There are no shades of pure white because the colour is the combination of all colours. Note: garments in this section may, at times, be coloured with stage lighting and AV projection. Second Skin, Hayley May and Fiona Christie, New Zealand
