Pages 4-6: MUSIC MUSIC : GRADE 8 2020 General Information VALUE The scholarships are worth up to 70% of academic fees. Music scholarships also cover music tuition on up to two instruments / voice. (The number of and length of lessons, per week, paid for on each of the instruments, is determined by the core syllabus requirements.) ELIGIBILITY Candidates currently in Grade 7 wishing to enroll in Grade 8 at Herschel, who have achieved a high standard of performance on any recognised classical music instrument or voice, are eligible to apply for the scholarship. At the audition the level presented (on the principal instrument) should be a minimum of Grade 3 or higher. (ABRSM, Trinity or UNISA levels are recognised benchmarks, though pieces do not have to come from these syllabi.) SELECTION On the day before the practical audition, candidates will be required to write a theory assessment (the level of which will not exceed grade 3). They will also be required to play scales and arpeggios/technical exercises on their first instrument (at the level of the pieces being presented), as well as do an aural test of a general musical nature. Practical audition: The candidate will be required to play her chosen pieces for the selection panel at Herschel. In addition she will/may be required to play a piece of sight-reading at the level of the pieces being presented. Finally candidates will be required to answer questions of a general musical nature. The candidate must be prepared to perform (on her principal instrument) up to three pieces, in contrasting styles, that reveal her musicianship and technical ability. Candidates who play a second instrument (or who take voice as their second instrument) should be prepared to perform their third piece on that instrument. A timetable for both days will be communicated as soon as possible after the closing dates for applications. Candidates are expected to provide their own accompanist where the instrument/music requires this. (Playing unaccompanied is generally not recommended.) Candidates are reminded to bring their own instruments with them on both days. Copies of ALL the music to be performed must be submitted with the application form. No application form will be accepted without these copies attached. An important criterion in the selection of the scholars will be whether they have shown involvement and commitment to the music programme at their current and/or previous schools, and whether they are likely to continue to contribute to the musical life at Herschel on a permanent basis during their years at the school. OBLIGATIONS The successful candidate(s) and will be expected to take music as a subject from Grade 8 to Grade 12 and will be required to take an active part in the varied musical life at the school. The successful candidates will benefit from the scholarship for the remainder of their schooling at Herschel up to matriculation level, although the awards are reviewed annually and Herschel reserves the right to withdraw scholarship privileges from pupils at any time during their schooling if it is felt that their musical performance or contribution is below that required. Music Scholars will be required to have their instrumental tuition with a member of the Herschel full-time or instrumental staff.
